We're gonna get relegated

Burton was almost a free pass, however if we get turned over by Northampton in midweek as well then questions are going to be asked and not just by the usual suspects

No it will just be the usuals.

This early in pre-season everyone in the squad (players from last season, new signings, academy lads stepping up and any trialists we're looking at) needs game time for fitness. I don't know if Burton kept most of their starting XI on longer than half time, but I don't know why anyone would expect to see a positive result when using 22 players in a match, large chunks of whom will be playing in a match together for the first time.

The most important thing to get out of your first pre-season game is an injury-free squad.

I'll reserve judgement on the lineups, systems, tactics and new signings until half a dozen league games have been played. My judgement on Clough is already that he is the right man.

You are supporting the wrong club my friend. I'd suggest another club up the road who talk about big names and that sort of thing.

I can't see why you disagree, We need a proven goalscorer at this club, otherwise we are going nowhere.

Don't disagree with the sentiment, of course everyone knows we need a goal scorer. Its the childish "and I want it now" and "it has to be a big name" that I have issue with. It won't be a big name because that isn't the way we are doing business. Clough doesn't seem interested in big names and thus far he appears to have done the right thing. Do you trust him?

I think the issue is, is that we are a league one club. Any PROVEN / BIG NAME goal scorer is going to be much higher in demand in the championship / lower end of the premiership and will have much better options on the table that we can offer.

Proven goal scorers are pretty hard to come by, so when they do become available it's going to be difficult for us to complete, thats why its up to Nige to unearth a potential proven goal scorer (McNulty) or take a punt on someone such as Winall who is young and has done it for just one season so hardly proven.

Without wanting to sound bladey blade, looking what Nige managed to cobble together and achieve last season and also looking at his transfer dealings this season (not just who we have signed but the maguire situation, refusing to pay over the odds for COG etc), we are heading in very much the right direction and I have faith that come what may, on the 9th of August, we will be in the best position the club has been in for a long long time and will be satisfied that Nige has done all he can to build a team capable of winning this dire league.

Thank fuck for that. Someone does understand! In a nutshell this is it. If we can't trust the bloke who turned us around from relegation certainties into something that resembled an unstoppable force, without a single "big" name then as fans we are beyond help.

We went down the "big name" route before and it nearly took us under. This is about building a team capable of getting promoted. I agree we have lost players in Coady and Brayford who were better than what we have but who is to say Clough isn't going to loan someone else in who will fill those voids? We haven't even started the season yet and the storm clouds are gathering and sending bolts down from the heavens.

As for Porter starting, if that is the case then its a disappointment. He isn't the man to lead us to promotion. We need a goalscorer in there. But perhaps Clough thinks we have that, perhaps he is looking for that next striker. You would hope so, but whatever the case I for one am pleased that we aren't doing our washing in public and Clough seems to be going about his business in the right manner.

As NC has said, the date to start winning is Aug 9th. He is a clever man, I for one think he knows exactly what he's doing and where the solution is. Patience is a virtue that pays dividends.

Did any of the players sport the "carpet over the logo" look?

That was a shock seeing we'd shipped four when I came on here this morning. The fact that it was this morning should tell you all you need to know about how important it was.
Reminds me of the last away friendly I attended, sometime in the 70's/80's when Notts County nailed us for 4 and I realised that such games were a complete waste of time and money.

Roll on 9th August when I get to see the team for the first time.
