In today's game it was risky, but I don't know what else he could have done. His leg/foot slowed after contact with the ball, hard but just about fair for me. If he had pulled out of it he could have been the one hurt.
It's easy to criticise from the armchair, but even experienced players are essentially young lads & they get swept up in the heat of the moment & the occasion; I like to think I played hard but fair & I wouldn't have been happy with a team mate of mine if he had pulled out of that one.

It's all about opinion, no need to slag anyone if they don't hold the same view.

I agree. Ingelson was a week late to the challenge. Ball had gone ages before he got there so he could have pulled up and stayed out of the way of where Philips boot was heading. Maybe we just have red and white specs on..

Wilder said it was a mistimed tackle. It wasn't. He got the ball.

If you were being charitable on KP it was a genuine attempt to get the ball and his lack of match fitness meant that his swinging leg followed through at just the wrong height for Ingelssons knee, maybe not 100% deliberate just very clumsy. If anything I think it was less rash, less forceful and in a place where he had to challenge unlike Rothwells

Let's be right he knew what he was doing. Shocking challenge but we all make bad decisions

No, I agree.

I don’t think it was a red, personally. It’s very harsh on Phillips. It would be impossible to not have any follow-though in that motion.

But the rules today are so soft that I’m not shocked. Especially with the Wednesday players reaction, maybe forced the ref into a decision.
 
In 2026, you get a red card for tackles that endangers the safety of an opponent or use excessive force. This is judged by factors such as if the tackle is leading with studs (it was), if the tackle is off the ground (it was) and if the player uses excessive speed in making the challenge (debatable).

If you win the ball, then fly into someone's shin, it's a red.

When they look back at the tackle and can see Phillips clearly got the ball and it was his follow through momentum that accidentally brushed his knee......could the red card be rescinded or down graded to a yellow on appeal ?

Asking politely for an imaginary friend 😉

But at speed in the ground it just looked an ordinary clearance / clash of body parts, with no malice intended.

Where else can his leg go in that motion with the Wednesday player chasing in on top of him to try and also win that ball…

I think we know that you can soften your leg in those situations, he didn’t and followed through

Professional footballers pull out of 50:50 tackles all the time. Ones that a Saturday pub league player would fly into. Difference is a) they are risking a career ending injury by getting involved and b) they are likely to get red carded if they get it wrong

*Unless the player on the end of the tackle is wearing a red and white shirt.

The Wednesday player wasn’t in possession of the ball so it’s not a tackle. Phillips cleared the ball and the dozy twat came in late causing the injury to himself.
 
I think its a red in todays game.

If its a tackle on KP, we are all shouting for a red card.

I used to get kicked loads in football matches years ago and I would say its a possible red back then.

IMO, he wins the ball but there is no need for the follow through that high.

I always ask myself, would I be saying its a red card if it had have been on KP?

My answer is yes, so its a red for KP IMO

Exactly, the Wednesday should’ve pulled out, it wasn’t even a 50:50, it was 60:40 in Phillips favour, which is why he won the ball.

His display of agony after the tackle was what they were hoping for.It was amazing that he got up showing no effects. Maybe he shouldn't have gone in for a late tackle

I think this is the key point, regardless of whether we agree or not. Not helped by Ingelsson squealing like a pig so to speak just to help make up the ref's mind.

Our players who have been sent off for straight reds must surely know how its interpreted but in the heat of the game don't seem have the awareness to maintain their discipline.

I for one believe that football is meant to be a contact sport and that getting kicked and sometimes getting injured is an occupational hazard rather than always being a punishable offence as it seems to be now.

He was looking at the ref before he hit the ground. Then rolled around in agony. Then played for another 40 minutes with no issues.

If Phillips had played it normally he would've been body slammed by Ingelson so instead he knocked it forwards in a way to protect himself.

1 yellow Vs 7 yellows
11 fouls Vs 20 fouls

We'll of course be seen as the bad guys because of another red card.

Plenty in this thread seem to be of the opinion that rules around tackling haven't changed since the 90s.

Said this in SB earlier: It's no longer enough to just win the ball, you've got to do it cleanly. Whether contact with the player occurs after contact with the ball is irrelevant - Phillips goes in to smash the ball, and is fully prepared to take out anyone who gets in his way while doing so. That's not what is deemed "safe" in the modern game.

The threshold for what constitutes a red card is dramatically lower these days, and for good reason. Ingelsson was fortunate that he didn't come out of that challenge with a serious knee injury - it was a thoroughly deserved red.

But to get back to the topic this thread was originally made for, yes, the discipline is really poor. That even goes back to last season, where we were just engaging in group shoving contests every 4 or 5 games. It suggests poor direction from the coaching staff, that these things happen so frequently.

I've probably forgotten others.

We have to stop the red cards. Especially very experienced pros getting them.
