One goal wonders

Iffy's only goal was away at Burnley wasn't it? A reyt pea roller from outside the box.

Always remember us racing into a 3-0 lead at Norwich in about 20mins, then Iffy got sent off for violent conduct and we ended up hanging on after Darren Kenton scored a overhead kick to make it 3-2. That's the only time i've seen us win at Norwich or Ipswich (excluding the playoff draw at Portman Road in '97) in a total of 19 visits!

Players who only managed to break the net once for United. How many have your seen?

My list for the 80's and early 90's.

29/1/83 Gary West - Bournemouth H - tap in from a corner
2/11/85 Steve Wigley - Blackburn H - that goal
22/4/86 Lee Walshaw - Leeds H - decent shot to win us the game at 3-2
4/4/87 Andy Kennedy - Blackburn H - we cleared a corner and AK ran half the length of the pitch before finishing with aplomb
29/8/87 Chris Marsden - Blackburn H - on his debut to put us 2-0 up
26/4/88 Wally Downes - Ipswich H - swerving free kick on the left at the kop end
29/10/88 Chris Wilder - Bury H - Pen to put us 1-0 up
21/1/89 Darren Carr - Gillingham H - another one from a corner
17/8/91 Colin Hill - Norwich A - a corner was cleared and a 25 yarder from Hill put us 2-0 with 13 mins left. We drew 2-2.

The big surprise for me, out of the above is Steve Wigley. Yes after that goal, I thought he would have been a prolific scorer

I saw Wigley, Kennedy, Marsden, Downes, Wilder and Carr off this list.

Kennedy's goal was terrific - sad we didn't sign him permanently.

Marsden's was a decent goal - a cross came in from the left, Richard Cadette dummied and let it run through his legs and Marsden ran in and smacked it into the bottom corner.

Downes' goal was a fluke - it was a cross that went straight in. Paul Williams had been sent off moments before for breaking Tony Humes' nose as the players were lining up for the free kick.

Wilder had an easy chance to get off this list, but missed a penalty against Aldershot at the end of the season.

More I've seen:

David Barnes v Wimbledon in 1990-1 - put us in front in a 2-1 defeat - a corner was swung out to him and he scored from outside the box.
Mark Foran v Wolves in 1994-5: good header from a corner in a 3-3 draw
Charlie Hartfield v Bristol City 1994-5: long range shot as we went 2-0 up in the first 5 minutes
Paul Holland v Southend 1995-6: the equaliser in a 2-1 defeat, a well placed shot after playing a one-two.
Dougie Hodgson v Bradford 1996-7: forced home a corner to give us the lead
Ben Doane v Crewe 2001-2: 30 yard strike in a 2-2 draw that Clayton Ince might have done better with.
Jean Phillipe Javary and Steve Lovell vs Watford 2001-2: I don't really remember JPJ's goal, but it might have been from a corner. Lovell's was a good goal - latched onto a through ball, kept his cool and lobbed the keeper as he came out.
Iffy Onoura v Burnley 2002-3 - he was about 20 yards out, but was helped by a deflection.
John Paul McGovern v Walsall 2002-3 - nice strike to equalise in a drab 1-1 draw.
Robert Page v Norwich 2003-4 - slammed home a loose ball from a corner for the only goal of the game.

Please if anybody has the Andy Kennedy goal get it posted on here. If my memory is correct he broke loose from our own half with the Blackburn team in his wake and then chipped the approaching keeper from the edge of the box. What a goal. He then just stood facing the kop with his arms outstretched in celebration. Back in the days where we barely averaged 13,000 gates, the goal deserved a better time and crowd.

The Steve wigley goal reminds me a bit of the John Barnes effort against Brazil. Wigley went through about 4-5 - maybe 6 players of the Blackburn team doing one-two's with his teammates and then poked it into the net. Not as good as Kennedy's goal ^ stated above IMO.

As well as the one v Portsmouth, he got one at Tranmere in a 3-3 draw.

Came off the bench, made two and scored one. Wasn't it a 3-2 win though?

Danny Cadamateri just got the one didn't he? He scored away at Crewe on Sky, we raced into an early 3-0 lead but ended on holding on 3-2. It was a pity for Cadamateri, he could beat players for fun but couldn't finish a bag of crisps. We all thought he just needed one to go in and the floodgates would open, alas it was not to be.

Holland also scored in the LC and McGovern scored in both the FAC and LC, but I suspect you are only counting league goals

Before the last game of the season (Agana scored both goals at the Lane End against Norwich), Barnes goal against Wimbledon was our only league goal scored at the Lane End that season

.

Actually, you're right, the 3-3 draw was the season before, when he was an unused sub.

I remember the 3-2 win because we were there. We went 2-0 down and I said to Trig Jnr (TY) that we'd still win. At the tender age of 12 he was already doubting my wisdom and said "You always say that", which I did and unusually, I was right

Tom Cowan never scored for us.

I always thought he would one day. He used to go up for corners, he had a great leap in him and he could really head a ball so I used to back him every time for first goal scorer. He was usually 50/1 or similar. Cost me a fortune. He scored quite regularly when he went to Huddersfield as well.

How many did Andy Campbell score for United? Steve Bruce had a big thing for him but nobody else did.

Campbell got 3

16/1/99 Bolton H
20/4/99 Grimsby A (2)

I believe Cowan scored for Huddersfield against United on 31/3/97

What about the Italian kid we had on loan a few seasons ago who scored against the pigs? His name escapes me but apart from that goal (header at the Lane end) he was hardly prolific with the goals.

Arturo Lupoli. He got another goal but honestly I can't remember it.

Yes, that is right. It was their 2nd goal. In the 1st minute Tracey let in a really soft goal. Shortly after, Lee Sinnott's own goal levelled the score before Cowan's winner (also in the 1st half) which was a leaping header (from a corner) that hit the underside of the bar and in. On my birthday too!

I was trying to find the exact attendance for this game online but couldn't find it . I do have a book somewhere that will have the crowd in. If it was around the 8,000 mark ( which we got regular around then ) then the 8,000 or so saw an all time great goal. Definitely in my top 20 Blades goal of all time.

Tracey caught it, rolled over and practically threw the ball in the net.
