At which point do we look to next season?

I suppose this topic has been breached in other threads without perhaps making it the centrepiece.

So my question would be, at which point do we concede defeat on the current season and look to the next one? And how does this impact your actions?

I think 2 wins in the next two give you some belief. But I’m still not sure how that changes things in many cases.

Keeper - we’ll probably stay as we are. Personally I’d like to have seen Faxon vs Mansfield. I’d also have considered Patterson on loan and get Cooper fixed up. For now we’ll probably make do and offload Davies in the summer.

Defence - With eyes on next season I’d like to see Sasnauskas and Sachdev sent on loan to see if they could be viable squad options next season. For the first team, IF we could get a reasonable deal, then I’d be tempted to get a centre back in and they would be my token moderate effort to have a bit of a play off dart. I’d be expecting Mee and Bindon to be off the books by the summer and for Wilder to try and offload McGuinness. He’ll be out for centre backs in the summer. Bindon or Souttar may be options depending on finance. I’d probably keep Burrows for now l, long contract, no rush to sell, unless daft money gets waved.

Midfield - we are learning to live without Hamer. I’d take someone like Rothwell on loan and pocket the fee for Hamer and the wage saving. Rothwell can play deeper which would probably be more useful.

Forwards - Getting Bamford potentially sets us up for next season and Cannon seems to play better off a presence. Ideally Marsh and Oné come into the picture next season after game time on loan. Campbell needs to shake himself then he remains an option. You’ve always got O’Hare as a 10 too. Not against Ings moving on or staying if fit for the 4th striker role though don’t know his wages of course.

So for me, perhaps Boly on loan and Rothwell also but Gus out the door and a number of younger players to gain experience on loan.

Much beyond that I’d be surprised.

Really try to offload all pre Wilder signings where possible - focus on getting Peck and Arblaster fit . Move on Davies x 2 plus Shackleton plus Campbell and Hamer . Have a clear budget and a Wilder led recruitment plan and focus like hell on getting what he wants

Then start again

Win the next 2 and people start to believe again. But I fully expect to get turned over by Ipswich on Saturday.

If we can somehow get to within 9pts of 6th after we've played Ipswich, Boro and Millwall, then I'll fully believe we have a very good chance.

It wouldn't surprise me if we only manage 1pt from those three games though, which could mean we're more like 15pts off

To answer your initial question: when we need more than 2.1 points per game.

Planning has to start well before we know which league we will be in. Only detailed planning waits for the outcome.

Should be planning for next season already. Get the squad trimmed down, get some of the youth players new contracts (Seriki, Brooks, Arblaster, Peck) and start working on whatever formation/patterns of play we’re going into next season with.

Even though leaving with 0 points hurt in our current situation in a strange way the Charlton game gave me hope. The team showed some exceptional fight in that match. This isn't a team that has given up on the season and the quality is there in the squad to still get enough points.

Getting something against Southampton will be key though because losing there would be deflating.

We just have to keep turning up and trying our hardest.

We know that they're capable of brilliance when they want to which is punctuated with some absolute dross in between, which is why we are where we are. We've also started with a 6 game handicap and probably a 10 player handicap where most of them should never have darkened our doors to start with.

Realistically, if we can finish mid-table or even sneak into the top half, it'll have been a decent rescue effort considering the decisions that our esteemed owners decided to make, in good faith but with no due diligence, experience, knowledge or understanding of football whatsoever.

If we write it off and down tools too early, we'll end up back where we were a couple of months ago, especially with Norwich starting to pick up a bit.

I suspect that COH are thinking the same. Despite CW saying he is happy with the support from the board we havent pulled up any trees so far in the window. Maybe the 'left field' signing will change that but i suspect the best option is to pull up the drawbridge unless anyone is available that we want and that we think will be a building block for next season. There is no point in wasting money on short term loans that won't be around gone May.

As a fan I wrote the seasons expectations off when we appointed Selles and had that shambolic summer of recruitment. The owners were clueless and I tempered my expectations to something like a boring midtable season with a manager with experience at the bottom end of the division.

I didn’t quite expect things to be as bad as they were with Selles and Wilder has had to come in and do some real work again to stabilise the club again.

When Wilder came in the rebuild for next season began. Changing yet again the culture of the players at the club, he’s removed the players that he can, so far.

As others have said, we’re still focussed on survival. Wilder, as we know, likes milestones, target setting. So he will certainly be looking to things like turning our negative GD to positive, reaching a number of points, points per game average going up.

The season may well be written off by fans in terms of promotion but the staff and players won’t want to settle for the position we’re in. Each place gets more cash in the bank and will go along way to set us up for next year… although I expect the summer will be one of scaling back spending as parachute payments disappear

All you can do is one game at a time.

It will be interesting how this manifests JB terms of the window.

I’d imagine as new owners they’re feeling a little guilty about being shown up for knowing so little about the subject matter. I wonder if Wilder gets to bend their ear a bit and they end up putting up more of their own cash as a penance for their own stupidity.

I think our STs are just chipping into the pot that they are also chipping into. I don't see it as giving 'them' my money.
That's how it always is, whoever owns the club.

I'm enjoying the turn-around, let's see wherever it takes is and look forward to pulling back up as far as we can.

It's just being realistic at this stage.

We're second place in the form table over the past 10- which sounds great in isolation.

However- despite being the second best team in the league over these games we're only 1 point closer to the playoffs now than we were before that run of 10. We've left ourselves with such a limited margin for error coming into a really tricky run of games.

Im sure until it is mathematically impossible Wilder will not write off the play offs.
Its highly unlikely we will reach them but I think we will get close, 8th or maybe 9th.
If by some miracle we do get there, we know the outcome already.
So.................start planning for next season NOW.
I think thats why no one has come in yet.
11 days to go yet though so you never know.

Also regarding Gus. Whilst he was out he wasnt a big miss really. So Id not be majorly upset if he does go. He is absolutely a talent but, hes not a full 90 minute man. The Prem sides will have seen this and as a result may not come calling. Netherlands may well do though.
