We’re not making the Play Offs…..simple maths

With our track records we will ( maybe) achieve points that NORMALLY get you into the playoffs.
BUT this year the team in sixth will have more points than any other team has ever achieved to get to sixth.

It's the Blades way.

With our track record we'll sneak in as the form team, lots of momentum, a big night under the lights at Bramall Lane sees us to Wembley... and we don't turn up.

Blades 0-1 Watford.

That's the actual Blades Way.

4,500-1? If Wednesday win every game between now and the end of the season, they wouldn't even GET to the play-offs, never mind win them!!
Max they can get is 59 points!
Three more defeats and they can't realistically even stay up!
I think the odds should be more like 4.5million to 1. Its almost mathematically impossible.

For 6 teams not to get more than 59 points all the teams in the top 15 or 16 would have to draw almost every game between them whilst most of the games to the bottom 8 or 9

Imo we need to average 2 points a game to get to the playoffs offs I am fully aware you can’t get 2points per individual game but it’s an average

i dont even think the top 2 are anything special even coventry are showing signs of flagging a bit and boro are inconsistent still lots of games to go and quite a few of the top 6 still to come to us beat oxford and theres a chance we might only be 6 points away
I agree with that, regarding the top 2 nowt special.

I've predicted the scores for the rest of the season (I feel I've been reasonably realistic throughout), and in 5 games time we're still 8 points off:

We've done it! More playoff misery will follow of course, but it's the Sheffield United way.

Keep playing some positive football, and show me the spine of a side emerging and some future planning and, given the start to the season, I'll be happy.

Scabs were 6 points off 6th at the same point of the season as we are now in the season they finished 4th (21/22) and went up. Definitely not impossible. UTB ⚔️🤞🏼

If we could strengthen significantly at CB that could be the thing that pushes us over the edge required to get into the top 6

It's not the obvious point we need to strengthen but does anyone think a pairing of Tanganga and Mee/Bindon is good enough to get promoted with? I don't think so. It's similar to trying to do it with Anel and Robinson. And Wilder will have this in mind, because he will be aiming for promotion now

We have the scope to go after such a CB because I don't think we need more than 2 or 3 signings elsewhere. RB and CM being the positions. Maybe a GK too. I'm not bothered about wingers and strikers if we renew Bamford and keep Hamer

Isn’t the points deduction taken into account? How the fuck are Wednesday getting another 22 points this season?

The main thing that goes in our favour of reaching the playoffs mathematically is the fact that we very very rarely draw, we didn't draw a game away in 2025 at all, there are 10 away games left and 11 at home we need 13 wins from those 21 to hit over 70 points, if we win 8 at home of 11 then we need 5 wins away from 10 - tough ask but not as impossible as some are saying for instance, if we beat Oxford, Swansea, Blackburn, Preston, Wednesday, hull, Wrexham and West brom at home and Charlton, Norwich, Portsmouth, derby Qpr, away, then that would put us on over 70 points, I've selected those teams as they are the ones that come to the lane with the weaker away records, and the ones we visit have the weaker home records of our remaining fixtures, so on paper or a screen to be more precise it looks doable

We are the best team in the division over the last 10 matches, if that isn’t serious momentum then I’m not sure what is.
10 points from the last 6 is good but perhaps not enough for what we want.

The maths doesn't look that bad to me in terms of getting a play-off-ish points tally. It's the number of teams between us and 6th.

Posted this on Twitter the other day to show where we've clawed points back. Our gap to 18 clubs has either gotten smaller or we now have positive gap. Our gap to 5 clubs has gotten bigger.

To get top 6, we need to make ground on all but the top three; if we don't make ground on 4th, we won't have made ground on 6th, or 8th, or 10th etc etc. It's a tough ask. And given the number of sides between us and 6th, I think variance will have it's part to play: at least one of those clubs (6th-12th) is very likely to have a similar run to us (if we're assuming we have good run to the end of the season).

Teams I'm confident we'll finish above, who are currently top-half:
  • Hull
  • PNE
  • Stoke
  • Wrexham
  • Derby
  • Stoke
  • QPR
  • Leciester
Teams I'm less confident about (obvs the top 3):
  • Southampton
  • Watford
  • Millwall
  • Bristol City
My big worry (linked to rumours about getting in Choudhury in place of Femi) is that we revert to a more defensive side that doesn't mind honours even against play-off teams. Just got to attack every game. Draws are no good at all.

Good analysis.

22 points from the last 10 is if we carry that on.
I think taking form from matches 2 months ago is not a good indicator of what is happening now.
I think we both agree that the form is good, but I don’t feel convinced that we are shooting past 10 or so teams above us who may have good results in the next two months.

Surely to get top 6 we only need to make up ground on 6th place?

I think the reason Bristol got into the playoffs with a relatively low total was that the top 3 took a total of knocking on 300 points, this season the points have been shared throughout the league which means if the second half of the season follows the trend of the first, then you would be be looking at upwards of 75 points to get into the player offs, so we would need roughly 2 points a game average to get there, although that is doable but it would be a difficult task

Let's be realistic on projections based on last seasons shitting our pants 3 games - losing to Oxford, Millwall and Plymouth. All came after bumming Coventry at home which was probably our best league performance of the season.

I still have a sneaky feeling we'll go up this year for some reason though.
