It was bad, and it was momentous - but it’s debatable whether it was even our worst own goal in that game.
All three Leeds goals were basically a result of Mel Rees getting injured in the build-up to their first. I can’t even describe the ridiculousness of it for those who can’t remember, but while he was laid out on the floor we managed to contrive to gift them a first goal, then Rees played the rest of the game on one leg (which meant he couldn’t get anywhere near a simple cross for their second, and also meant Gayle panicked knowing Rees wouldn’t be able to move to collect a back pass, or get out to get to the ball himself - resulting in the calamity above).
Gayle wasn’t the best defender we’ve ever had, but I’ve always felt it was a bit harsh that he’s pilloried for that own goal, when actually Leeds won the match and the title off the back of a freakish injury to our keeper.
