The rebuild is underway with McNulty, Campbell-Ryce, Basham and Butler signed already: unprecedented activity in May for SUFC.

Doesn't Clough know we shut the club at the end of every season and start thinking about the new season round about July? Times, they are a changing!

Note: Clough said he had 10/11 and would look to run a 1st team squad of 18/19, with Kennedy just outside that squad and still a development player.

If Davies and Porter both sign the contracts they've been offered that makes it 17 players in the first team squad.
We haven't signed a right back or a first choice centre-forward yet, so the signing of those will take it up to 19.
No room for McGinn jnr and/or Coady unless somebody else leaves. Maybe McGinn senior?

Goalkeepers:
1 Mark Howard - Contracted till end of June 2015, optional year extension taken up
2 George Long - Contracted till end of June 2016

Defenders:
3 Bob Harris - Contracted till end of June 2015 - optional year extension taken up
4 Harry Maguire - Contracted till end of June 2015, new long term contract offered
5 Neill Collins - Contracted till end of June 2015 + optional year extension
6 Andy Butler – Contracted till end of June 2016

Midfield:
7 Ryan Flynn - Contracted till end of June 2016 + optional year extension
8 Michael Doyle - Contracted till end of June 2015
9 Stephen McGinn - Contracted till end of June 2015
10 Stefan Scougall - Contracted till end of June 2017
11 Jamie Murphy - Contracted till end of June 2016
12 Jamal Campbell-Ryce - Contracted till end of June 2016
13 Chris Basham – Contracted till end of June 2017

Strikers:
14 Jose Baxter - Contracted till end of June 2016
15 Marc McNulty - Contracted till end of June 2017

is it a first team squad of 19 and then loans, not sure if NC ever clarified the exact plans

I'm pretty chuffed with the business so far. I'm not concerned about big name or big money signings - I'm concerned with signings who can get us out of his league with the minimum of risk or fuss.

And talk on other threads about the signings so far not demonstrating game changing investment is just a nonsense. We have absolutely no idea what funds NC has been given to do his business. For all we know he may have been offered £Xm over the next 3 seasons and he's choosing to be very frugal this season in order to be better positioned in the championship. Who knows......

In Clough we trust.

Decent signings so far if unspectacular, they can cover a few positions so we might have to wait to see what Nigel has in mind, are they cover or are some replacements for others ?

Clough played with a false 9 but on the whole has favoured 4-4-2 or a 4-4-1-1 formation previosuly - he showed last season though he will adapt his tactics game to game and make sure the players are comfortable with different plans.

I expect a team of

GK Howard

RB To be signed or Basham
CB Butler
CB Harry (if here)
LB Harris

LM Murph
CM Basham/Doyle
CM To be signed/Scougall
RM Flynn

AM/FW Scougs/Baxter
FW To be signed/McNulty/Him who shall not be mentioned.

With Scougs, Baxter, Murphy and Flynn been able to interchange positions and JCR to be interchangable in this system too.

I think this is the basis of a very strong team when allayed to Cloughs coaching methods and team ethos - super excited for next season.

................Howard
New.RB Maguire Butler Harris
...............Basham
Flynn Scougall Wallace(?) Murphy

Subs:- Long, Davies, Collins, Doyle, Campbell-Rice, Baxter, McNulty

Agree. It's grown up management; practical, down to earth, get the job done with as little fuss as possible.

As for investment and it's impact - didn't the MD say yesterday that we do not need to sell our best players? What more can he say and when did you last hear that from Bramall Lane, if ever?

I hope not because I think Baxter is our best player, though he may have a bit to prove yet I do concede.

My only minor concern is to ask ourselves, have we done enough to convince to Maguire to sign another contract. I think if Davies and Porter do sign next week then we just have 3 signings to make and they need to be better than the stocking fillers we have made so far.

Agreed. However, you'd expect that the "higher value" signings, if they are to come, would be the ones that take the most time to land.

The signings so far are all either solid or with good prospects, but nothing like enough to make us standout favourites for next season.

Not what the bookies think. Not that I'm a gambling man, but it's how they make money ao their opinion must count for something I guess

I tend to agree, but I was bemused by the odds. Perhaps it's a measure of the a quantity of cash that has gone on us, compared to the relative minnows around us. Football fans are irrational, after all. Curious though.

A lot of managers would have snapped at the first chance of spending the cash, bought a load of good League 1 players in, put a promotion on their CV and then left this club snookered in the Championship when half the budget's gone and we have a squad full of fellas in their late 20's not good enough to make the step up. Fair play to Clough, he's doing what he thinks is the right thing for the Club, but it is a gamble, because if we don't go up next season then his job certainly won't be secure.

Our first eleven (with Brayford & Coady), which at its best couldn't beat Preston, Wolves or Brentford in the league last season, was stronger than anything we could put out next week (and we may be about to lose Maguire on top of that).

I believe we still require two good strikers and replacements for Coady and Brayford (and probably Collins, if Butler is here to replace Maguire as I expect he is), as well as a couple of cover players. Davies looks to be signing and will be one of the cover players I mentioned, he'll be useful to fill in anywhere down the right, but Harris doesn't have any such cover at left back and he tends to be quite injury prone, so I think that needs addressing. It seems Wallace is being earmarked to replace Coady, though most Tranmere fans seem to believe he isn't the same player anymore since his injury, so he might not be an ideal signing, our interest in McGinn has waned. The most important signings will be up top, if we get those right we'll be there or there abouts, if we don't get quality there, forget it in my opinion.

As it stands, I too am in "Camp Underwhelmed" and don't feel we look anything like a top two side. But the beauty of it is, is that it's early days, great to see us busy already.

Frugal this season in order to be better positioned in the championship. Now this is definately what he can not be,we desperately need to get out of this shite league in the up and coming season,we don't want to be tippy tapping around and staying in this league after next season, now if he is frugal as you put it,we will propably still be in this league in 3 or 4 years time and that would certainly not be acceptable.

Next season must be our best chance. The League looks less strong than last season with teams like Barnsley, Yeovil and Donny replacing Wolves and Brentford. Will Orient be such a force next season? Preston are likely to be strong and there is likely to be the odd surprise team like Rotherham this season but overall the League looks "easier". Let's hope this is our year.

Im surprised Brandy wasn't used by Walsall in the Butler deal ,maybe they don't fancy him either ,or Taylor as a lever to get Mcginn.

I think Butler was out of contract, agree with regards to Taylor/McGinn though, their fans seemed keen(ish) on the idea

I'm genuinely excited by the signings we have made so far and the names we are linked with. All good characters, Butler a natural leader, Basham premier league experience and still young at 25. Exciting talent in McNulty and JCR always a nightmare when he's played against us.

Shows you do have to spend millions on transfer fees to get out of this league (hopefully), would love to see Wallace arrive again the captain of Tranmere showing he is a leader and was a big reason behind Tranmere's promotion push in 12/13.

Interested to see who the mystery striker is going to be but in Clough I definitely trust (please no ched shouts).

Being frugal and tippy tapping about aren't the same thing. Frugal means careful, not necessarily tight. I want to get out of league 1 as much as the next guy, but I also dont believe it should be achieved at any cost.....

Cloughie is doing it right. Putting together a solid base first. No fancy names, just good pros that will fit in nicely.

I do however expect us to see a couple of marquee signings nearer the end of July.
