For me the whole Maguire situation now reminds me of the Jagielka situation pre-promotion. We had decent bids that came in (Wigan with £4m was one of them I think), but Warnock and the club basically were able to come to an agreement with him that he'd give the club one more year to get to the Premiership and then go if we failed. We didn't, he was a key part of that promotion team (both in midfield with his goals, and defence), and as a result we got two years more with him. While ultimately we undersold him, we in effect got what we would have received had we cashed in before the promotion season, and through keeping him got to the Premier League. Financially it was a situation that we gambled sensibly and won. Had we stayed up, he might have stayed an additional year or two, and the sale price would have been much more.

We should try and repeat this with Maguire. Frankly, he would have been well within his rights last summer to try and move on to further his career, what with promotion prospects declining. Clough and the club should simply say they want him to persevere with us this year, add a year to the deal so he doesn't go on a free, and in the event we don't get promoted a release clause can be triggered for bids over £Xm (an amount not dissimilar to what we'd be looking for right now). If we get promoted, he could potentially be captaining a team in the Championship in 2015. If we don't, he'll leave us as a 22 year old with an excellent League 1 record with an additional year's coaching by an excellent set of managerial staff.

What can anyone add to that, brilliantly put.Can you like anything more than once:D

Lets hope the board and manager do just that loughbrough;):p

The only manager to win the european cup from Beauchief links,,,

I took a nostalgic trip to Beauchief last weekend. Went with some old friends to the Beauchief Hotel for Sunday lunch and afterwards we went to have a look round what used to be my old school playing-fields (De La Salle).

We used to get on coaches to travel from Pitsmoor (where DLS used to be) every week.

There are deer on one of the old Rugby pitches!

Was first one i could think of, hows Aus??:)

beautiful.. hot.. lucrative .. but rather boring.. it kind of lacks an edge (undercurrent of aggro) that you get in the UK :)
they're all so bloody sensible and everything works.. it is starting to do my head in ;)

Just to clarify as it's mentioned elsewhere, MD Zap Brannigan stated that Maguire is still considering the offer - it has not, as of today, been turned down. What has been turned down is a bid and 2nd bid from the same club, almost certainly Wolves.

And that he's staying regardless of whether he signs or not. Good honest interview!

Could we also do what we forgot to do with Jags and Walker, i.e. insert a clause which said that if the player performed so well for his new club that he became a full England international the sum increased from £4m to, say maybe £7m? Would Spurs and Everton have turned that down? They signed two players who hadn't played much at the top level, but wouldn't they be happy to accept such a clause if they knew it would only be triggered if the players did exceptionally well for them?

Not saying I believe Maguire will become quite that good, but it should be a standard clause which would bring more money to clubs who produce good talents.

Absolutely, all of this. They start them early and train their kids not to stand out. This is why the UK is so great in the creative industries and why the trains in Austria run smoothly.

Yes dear old Beauchief Hall where that old pervert Capt Wall (a title he'd given himself from the Boy scouts or some other similar organisations) insisted eveyone had to be completely naked for the showers after games and he stood there watching eveyone get in and out.

I remember Captain Wall but surely you have to be naked to shower.

He did have a handy walloping slipper for miscreants ;)

When were you at DLS?

Just read some enthusiastic exchanges amongst Fulham fans wishing for Harry to fill their Hangeland vacancy. All full of praise and hope for him to join them. I wonder whether there are rumours about this being considered on a club level.

i occasionally wish someone would do something bonkers.. i'd do it myself but i'd prolly get deported

61-69 I had been ill so stayed back a year in 6th form
Ah so you would have missed the new gym on Scott Road with it's new showers which was a godsend for one or two of the Brothers with "tendencies" to indulge with pupils who didn't have the guts to tell them to fuck off like the rest off of us or perhaps they welcomed it. Strange then how we all took it in our strides and it did not see it as abuse and never felt the need to report it with hindsight now I wish I had but I assume it would have been hushed up by the Catholic hirearchy.
Oh dear perhaps not relevant to this thread.

Reported 3rd bid on the way from Wolves

Rumour from poster on BM gathers it's £2m take it or leave it with a £500k add on for promotion to Prem

Come on United, knock this on the head. All it needs is a. Statement that Harry is not for sale- end of. Surely, if we are serious about promotion, then keeping Harry is a must. After all we have no need to sell,or is it a habit we can,t stop .

I love crossing the road when the little red man says "NO" and watching the reactions of other people. An old woman once gasped in horror and said "Nein!!" as I crossed.

We had one too ,a certain Mr Wilkinson.
