Unlike Sydie we REALLY need to talk about Michael Cooper

Shame we let goals in and Cooper was at fault. But we of course need someone to slag off and with Peck at TC suddenly improving and scoring goals this causes many of our supporters problems.
We won 3-2 away against at team with proven quality. Just for once can we refrain from having a scapegoat.

I never believed that Peck was a big issue - a young player, playing in a struggling team, and it was showing in his performances much as it was showing in most of the players' performances. I always felt he'd improve as the team improved.

Cooper is a different matter. He's been poor all season, and there's clearly something wrong, because he's shown last season - and previously for Plymouth - what a good goalkeeper he is.

Currently his goals prevented (number of goals he'd be expected to concede based on quality of shots faced, minus number of goals actually conceded) is minus 4. That's the worst figure of any goalkeeper in the Championship, by some distance.

Stat's don't always give a fair picture, but this isn't really a stat you can argue with from watching him. It pretty much reflects what we've seen.

He really needs to be allowed to have the operation he needs or whatever it may be, to come back stronger - and to do that we need to get a reasonable replacement in, if only on loan for the rest of the season.

We were rumoured to be looking at the young Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Sam Tickle, if things went wrong with Cooper.

Very highly rated young keeper.

Its been clear all season that something's up with Cooper.
I really don't want us to kill the lads career by playing him through injury, he's had a lot of issues in the past so he probably requires further surgery.
His cousin Tess playing up in Scotland looks a real world beater.

Would be nuts if we got him.

He’s playing injured. I have no doubt about it now.

Adam Davies is not sufficiently adequate cover.

We have a problem with GKs that needs addressing asap.

Thought exactly the same for a while now. Today showed it.
Davies is definitely not good enough. Hopefully that will be put right in January.

Cooper has consistently been the worst keeper in the Championship this season, according to the stats.

Today his stats got even worse:-

XGOT.webp
24th out of 24 and way behind 23rd - statistically 6 goals let in that a bang average keeper should have kept out.

His mistake for the first goal today didn't even make a big impact on these numbers, because his mistake came to allow the chance, not to fail to save it.

Some players seem able to avoid criticism - but the longer this goes on the more the statistics are confirming it. Pointing out solid statistics is not scapegoating - this is consistent underperformance.

His cool demeanor is great in a crisis, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to bother him when he makes a cock-up. Most good keepers are slightly mad - Paddy, Pickford, Hart - Cooper is just too sane!

Cooper is undoubtedly a good keeper - his stats last year ranked him 5th with a +6 goals prevented rating - he is 12 behind that at present!!

We dodged a bullet today - but where would we be this season if that minus 6.1 were just an absolutely bang average performance of zero!

We definitely need some serious competition between the sticks - when players have a drop in form bringing in a replacement for a game or two usually gets them back up to speed. Davies replaced him for the second half at Coventry and conceded 3!

An old campaigner like Forster in January would be ideal - solid back-up, but no long-term threat, and good mentoring all week.

Playing injured and it looked like whatever it was flared up again in the 2nd half.

That being said, both him and Seriki could have done better for that 1st goal, either Cooper should get a hand on it to push it over the bar or away from Mavididi, or Seriki should have at least put Mavididi under some pressure in that situation to try and beat him to the ball.

2nd one is a good finish, and we should have at least put James under some pressure rather than giving him so much space to pick his shot.
Seriki assumed Coops was going to deal with it.
2nd one is not a good finish, 30 yard shot straight down the middle with a bit of swerve on it. Meat and drink for a pro keeper

Cooper completely at fault for the 1st but the second looked like a knuckle ball. Absolutely nightmare to face.

We brought in Bamford so why can't we bring in Forster? It's clear as day Cooper isn't right.

To keep playing him, or rest him and play Davies rather than bring in an ex England international, and experienced keeper for free, is negligence.
forster is a good shout far better than davies

Maybe I'm being too charitable but the second goal looked like a wicked flight of the ball. Looked like it would swing right and ended up in the middle. The first one actually worried me more because he obviously started coming for the ball and changed his mind. He's obviously carrying the back injury and not wanting to come for crosses if there's a chance of getting hit.
Having seen the highlights in not sure either are howlers but he'd probably expect to do better on both.

Should be stronger on the first but he gets clattered by Seriki which is what interrupts his attempt to deal with it.

Second one as you say looks very hard to read. But he maybe should deal with it if it's not deflected.

They're far from the worst I've seen.

We could then have Tickle Mee - gerrim signed!!!

Not that I'd expect him to move up at all, but without xGa/game to compare the stat is fairly meaningless. If he's facing twice the amount of shots in terms of quality as the other keepers you screenshotted then that's kind of the numbers I'd expect from keepers in equally poor form

I don't agree that it doesn't bother him.

I watched him at the final whistle and he slumped to the floor looking unhappy with himself.

McGuinness and Wilder made a beeline for him to pull him up and put their arm around him.

He’s been very off it. I don’t agree with the calls the pop up on here about always needing a top class second keeper, but I’d like to see someone come in in January. Even if it’s just an experience pro who’ll not be shit I’ll be happy (I think Davies has lost it as a result of not playing for years).

I was at the game, so couldn't see properly. Could anyone tell what he was getting treated for when he went down injured, prior to not moving at all a few mins later for their 2nd?

They treated his leg but then did something to his back as well. It looks like a back problem to me as he’s getting close to taking over from JLT as the new C-3PO.

His back would have been from the fall and nudge for the first goal I reckon. But his knees worry me.

We definitely need a good 2nd choice to push/ rotate/give him rest. I fear hes playing with injections to get by as we simply can not allow davies to step in.

I don’t think it’s just from this game, he’s had nothing at all to do for 2 games this week, then been poor today from fairly run of the mill situations, prior to that he’s been iffy to say the least all season.

Does he not want to be at the lane anymore? He absolutely gifted them both goals. Pathetic keeping.
