If Butler did sign, with him being Walsall captain last year, wonder if he might give an opinion to Clough re retaining Brandy...

From what I've read Swiss would know most about a butler

He won't have a butler, he'll have henchmen.Like the minor villains in Bond films.

"Do you want me to help you tie Bond up, boss?"

"Yes. And pinch his watch too, it looks nearly as nice as mine. I'm going to laser him in the bollocks for coming here, disrupting my plans to make the world flood so my Mega Diver Jacques Cousteau Limited Edition watch will actually be put to use."

"About time."

"What did you say? Watch out, bollock laser, remember? Anyway Mr. Bond, are you ready? I'm going to laser off your knackers"

Never met Swiss but he seems like a nice guy, the picture in my mind is of gru from despicable me :)

I've met him briefly and he was a nice chap. He's also got a very good sense of humour if you judge how he reacts to the ribbing he gets on here.

Swiss wears a monocle, has a curled, Elvis-style top lip, and finishes his sentences with "Doncha know". If a round of drinks costs less than £100 he regards it as a starter, and never, ever, takes public transport.

Here's an option for Nigel from the "left field" if Butler signs for us:

How about moving Harry into centre midfield? Last year (IMHO) he was our best midfielder when he strode forward with the ball, He sprayed passes to the left and right, carried the ball through the middle of the park using his physical presence and scored a few too. Perhaps a poor man's Yaya Toure in the making. If we were to sell him we would get much more for him too as midfielders command higher fees than defenders. It also solves the issue of us being vulnerable if he is stranded going forward with reduced defensive cover.

I can also quote Chris Morgan as saying that Maguire is our best midfield player (overheard during a game last season)

I tend to agree with that hodgyman, could see harry as that sweeper, effective bursting forward, but alas I doubt he will still be with us

One obvious area of weakness over the last few seasons has been a lack of pace at centre back.
Collins and Maguire have been a good, solid pairing over the last few seasons but neither is quick and they've been exposed at times by mobile, pacy attackers.
If we can retain Maguire and replace Collins with a player with similar attributes but who is also younger and quicker.
That would be the sort of subtle improvement we need to make in order to be good enough for automatic promotion.
Butler does sound like a Collins-type defender. But how quick is he?
Would Maguire-Butler or heaven forbid Collins-Butler be a mobile enough pairing?

Harry is nowhere near mobile enough to be a midfielder.

Tom Huddlestone isn't exactly nimble either. His role would have to be carefully defined, yes, but his lack of agility isn't an automatic barrier to playing midfield.

Harry as a sweeper?

I can't recall ever seeing Franz Beckenbauer galumphing forwards like an enraged rhino, but I await correction.

As I remember in the 1970 World Cup, when Alf Ramsey took off Bobby Charlton, Franz was then pushed forward enough to turn the game around for Germany to beat us. Oh, and a little help from Peter Bonnetti

Beckenbauer was playing in midfield then. He became a sweeper before the 1972 Euro Nations Championships. Beckenbauer had already scored his goal before Bobby Charlton was subbed (his replacement Colin Bell was probably our best player for the remainder of the match as his energy troubled the Germans a lot). Yes, Peter Bonetti could have stopped Beckenbauer's shot but he was unlucky with the other two goals (Seeler's equaliser was either a fluke or brilliantly executed and Labone was at fault for Muller's winner cos he was ball watching). West Germany's defenders in that game were Hottges, Schnellinger, Vogts and Fichtel (Schulz replaced Hottges). Beckenbauer and the hard working Overath were the midfielders, Libuda (nicknamed Stan, after Stanley Matthews) and Lohr were the wingers. Seeler played behind Muller. Watching the whole 120 minutes of that match on youtube about 3 months ago made me realise that England were more unlucky than I did when watching it live 44 years ago. The main two factors to our defeat wasnt really cos of Bobby Charlton's substitution or Bonetti's error, it was Seeler's freak (or brilliant) equaliser and the introduction of Jurgen Grabowski (replacing Libuda) who terrorised our left side. Hurst nearly scored a winner before full time after good work by Bell. Labone missed a sitter in extra time when it was 2-2 and I thought Alan Ball struggled a lot in the heat

The fact that he played so well is why I cited him as an example. With enough nous/skill you can look much quicker than you are.

Maguire would be one of the last players to spring (and I use the term loosely, more like lollop) to mind when reading that quote.

He's fine when moving in a straight line, a bit like the Supertram, but when he needs to change direction, he's shit it.

Said it before, but I love watching the oppo midfielders shit themselves as he lumbers towards them like a zombie end of level baddie.

Dunno about changing direction, but he usually lays it off ok.

I was responding to:
"I can't recall ever seeing Franz Beckenbauer galumphing forwards like an enraged rhino, but I await correction.".

My own recollection was that Franz had the responsibility of negating the threat of Bobby Charlton which kept him a little further back in the field until Bell came on. It was 44 years ago when I watched it, certainly not as recent as you so perhaps I have got that part wrong but certainly remember him "galumping" forward in that game. :-)

Painful memories but i thought it was good to see the whole match again
