Correct, but we might well have a better team than Wolves in 18 months time.

One or two of you get rather carried away about opposition teams. You should get on Preston at 8-1 quick. Those pesky bookies have had the stupidity to make us favourites over a team destined to romp away with the League. Their 0-0 masterclasses have to be seen to be believed.

I'm not sure where I fit into this "One or two of you" that get carried away with other teams, although I do note how you attempt to shoehorn posters into a few select groups when said groups don't actually exist. I probably share views with very few posters on here and often find myself baffled by some people's views. However, I don't expect that they all think the same and it's "me and the rest of you".

I pay very little attention to opposition teams. I was only aware who McDonald was because he used to play for us. That doesn't change the fact that he was a stand out player on the day. The same as we shouldn't pine for all players who have ever played for us, ex players aren't exempt from being good.

It is true that we might have a better team than Wolves in 18 months, although I'm not sure what relevance this bears to my point. Had we had McDonald in the current team, we might have been preparing for a play off final right now.

As for Preston, why would I put money on them? They were distinctly average when we played them and an average to decent Rotherham team have just beat them. By the way, I could only name one of Preston's players, Davies, he is quite famous you know. That isn't exactly getting carried away with them, is it?

You really ought to start reading posts in isolation, rather than reading a couple of words then deciding which of your silly pigeon holes you're going to stick it in. :)

Some of you may remember United signing Patrick Suffo - he had a good pedigree and was a decent signing for a team that found it hard to score goals.

When United signed him at the start of 2000-1, he was under suspension for attacking a referee in France. It was reported that United thought this suspension did not apply to English football, but it did, and so Suffo did not make an appearance until November, and failed to score until February. He scored only one goal that season, and United, in the playoffs for a week in February, fell back and finished 10th. Our top scorer managed 6 goals.

If we pin all our hopes on someone who's had no pre-season and no competitive football for 2 and a half years who isn't available until 2 or 3 months into the season, we're going to get the same result. I expect that McNulty and Evans will not be our only forward signings - and I certainly hope we have other ideas.

Lee Hughes didn't score a goal until 24 November when he made his come back after his time in jail, having been released on 20 August and playing his first game on 1 September. He then scored 7 goals within a month before ending the season with just one goal in his last 8 matches. He also struggled with injuries, and played his last game of the season in January. The following seasons he was back in good form.

Based on that you may be right that we shouldn't rely on Evans next season. He could struggle to get going, his form could be patchy, and he may be prone to injuries.

Every time I look on this forum there's another Ched Evans thread. I don't know what people have got to say that hasn't been said already.

Salient facts about Ched:

1. He is a convicted rapist
2. The likelihhod of him "clearing his name" is on a par with the likelihood of Leicester winning the PL next season
3. If we re-sign him there will be a minor media storm, which will quickly subside, because the media does not generally give a fuck about the third division and the teams therein.
4. If he plays for us, he will get dog's abuse from opposing fans ad infinitum
5. As for United fans, some will protest if he is re-signed, but only about 4 will cease watching as a result; if he then starts scoring lots of goals, the general consensus will be "he has paid his debt to society, how dare opposing fans abuse him".
6. He won't be as good as he was before he went inside
7. If we get promoted, he is likely to be shit in the second division.

When did 'Gash' become a descriptive word in the English language? I must have missed the memo

years ago from what I remember, it then became a noun around the time the inbetweeners came out

*edit in fact I think Chubby Browns been using it as a noun for decades

Think that's key Ted. Not sure if it's a regional thing, but coming from London, I recall the word being used 40-50 years ago in reference to female genitalia. Probably a word that was commonplace all over the UK, it's just that my associations were all based around London vocabulary.

There's also a line in Trainspotting describing Begbie's pool playing as "Absolutely fucking gash."

The Inbetweeners did add plenty of words and phrases to the vernacular('Bus Wanker', 'Clunge',"Feisty one you are") but they've got nowt to do with this one!

*Edit: i'm not sure that the writers of the inbetweeners are responsible for clunge, but they certainly helped to 'popularise' the term.

As in the brazilian, gash under the tash.

I for one would welcome ched back with open arms.. With mcnulty and possibly A N Other coming in we will be strong going forward.. Surely we need to consider our back line and replacing K MAC which we haven't done in anyway shape or form.. There will no doubt be several casualties from other clubs but let's spend some of the cup money and make a statement

actually thought you were having a laugh with this post. How would Ched coming back (if he does) improve things for us in the coming season...he'll probably not be fit for 3-4 months and cedrtainly not match fit. If he got in the squad by February he would have done well.. WIll he actually want to play agan ? Time to give the Ched obsession some fans have a rest.

As for KMac,would he have fitted in our style of play? . i.e. pace, passing the ball forwards at pace in the opposition half, taking a chance in the opposition half to create something- none of this is KMac's game.He is good at playing the quarterback role around the halfway line in a side a little more direct (e.g. Wolves now and us under DW1)

IMO if Ched comes back we will absolutely rape the league...too soon?

IMO, you should be banned from this forum for this 'joke'
.

I for one hope ched never returns. It's not all about goals, it's about pride, pride in the team, our team! If he played for another team when he was convicted, the majority of fans would have joked and scorned at the idea of him re-joining that team. Do you really want young fans, our sons, daughters, brothers, sisters looking upto a convicted rapist. I think deep down every blades fan answer will be "no"

I think you may be wrong on this one. personally I am 60/40 on him not coming back and hope we bring someone else in who with the same impact as 'that' season, however I am realistic to know it probably won't happen.

Cloughie is no mug. He wouldn't entertain Marlon King, who I believe left the club in the fortnight or so between Clough being interviewed & being installed as manager.
In Cheds case, Cloughie appears to have waited for the Prince to have assessed the situation, then with Royal approval, he has at least on one occasion, maybe more, visited the lad in person.
Maybe he believes the lad deserves a second chance. Maybe he knows something factually that we don't.
Either way, if Ched showed no remorse or had the wrong attitude, Clough wouldn't entertain him. And that decision would ultimately be his and his alone.

Lets see if anyone not wanting Ched can manage a sentence without putting 'convicted rapist' into it.

Just to show that football is the international language 'violeur condamne'...or, in the language of his homeland, 'rapist euog', it still doesn't read with any less foreboding, the intent is still as powerful and breath-taking.

Interesting working definition of 'fact' there Dazzler!

Agreed up to number 5. As for 6 & 7, that would be up to NC to decide IF he decides to award him a contract.

I would be surprised if NC gave him a contract if he was not able to prove his worth both on the pitch and in the dressing room !!

Good heavens ...... this appears to be a balanced and considered opinion on the subject !!!
