Our owner says we can't make money out of the FA Cup or Europe with a capacity of only 25,000 which is why he needs extra income from sponsorship (hence name change) or a bigger stadium (which won't happen because the KC belongs to the council) ... thanks Darren for posting the list of clubs that have qualified for Europe ... another thing about Hull playing Europe, getting from Hull to anywhere is a right pain ...... the first round may be against some team from Gibraltar, the Faroese champions (or runners up!!! ha ha ha ) ... nah ... I'd exchange all the cup games for finishing 16th in the Premier league at the end of next season. It could take us decades to get a "Premier League" mentality ... believing we have a right to be there ... now I'll get out of your forum!

The 67-68 competition appears to be the first one where entry was purely based on league position (although the one club per city rule applied). That was also the first one where the League Cup winners gained entry (as long as they were a 1st Division team - as it happens the 66-67 winners - QPR - were a 3rd Division team), so it may be that the rules were regularised then.

Been checking the division 1 tables in the 1960s and 1970s... Forest finished 11th in 1967-68 but played in the 1968-69 Fairs Cup, Derby finished 4th in 1969-70 but didnt get a place in the following season Fairs Cup but Coventry (6th) did get a place so it appears that 1971-72 competition (when it was first called the UEFA Cup) was based on league positions in the previous season. You are right that we werent really that close to qualify for a place in the 1962-63 Fairs Cup although in the paper reports throughout the 1962 summer stated that Alan Hardaker (FL secretary) tried hard to make the Fairs Cup committee to grant us a place in the competition

Not at all HCF. It's been interesting hearing a different perspective. Just a couple of points, how did you think Quinny played? And why is Bruce such a fat bastard?

Well, I had £2 on Quinn to get the Man of the Match. I think he's hugely underrated. I had a quid on him to score anytime as well. His work rate, CONSTANT MOVEMENT, running off the ball, intelligent positioning, crisp passing .... his attitude .... I think he's great. He fluffed a few things but everyone in the team did on Saturday. I was pleased when Bruce had him in the starting 11 ... there's way too much of the "he cost 7 million quid so he must be good" attitude at City ... a middle aged woman had the balls to shout about the elephant in the room ... "I don't think Jelavic is any good!" .... he's not crap but if he's worth £7 million quid, Quinn's worth more than we paid for him ... but that's like comparing apples and pears ,,, anyone who can score in the Premier League is worth a fortune and Long (who I like) and Jelavic have at least scored the goals that kept us up .... there's quite a serious Celtic backbone growing at Hull City with McShane, Brady, Boyd, MvGregor, Meyler, Quinn and Bruce adding that bit of bite you get ... I digress ... Quinn, ... very reliable in my eyes ... and Bruce is no idiot ... Quinn was on ahead of Koren & Boyd ... both internationals ... Quinn was great against Everton ... he's not scared of anyone, he doesn't respect reputations, he has the "let them worry about me" attitude ... a bit like you lot at Wembley ... you didn't give a toss who we were, you just set about stuffing us ... that belief .. it's powerful stuff .... apparently we're set to nick Husband from Donny ... shame ... it'd be better if we left neighbouring squads alone and nicked players from Fulham, Millwall ... but it's always the same problem, getting them to move north ...... everything goes in cycles ... the North will rise again ... oh ... and Quinn getting a 5 out of 10? ... tells you everything you need to know about the press in the UK .... he leaves himself wide open to criticism because he's always busy, always involved so a higher number of things will go wrong ... someone who goes missing isn't going to be seen screwing up ... nah ... Quinn, good honest player ...

The engraver wasn't putting Arsenal on, just finishing off the year. The "Arsenal" bit everyone seems to assume was this year's was actually 2002 - the engraving has the year then the date horizontally.

Your right, I was fuming about Arsenals name being engraved on the cup but then realised that was from a previous cup win, I thought it said 2004, but I'm sure your right about the date.

Fucking hell, even Hull City fans would rather sack playing in Europe off for the glory of finishing 16th in the PL. I'm done; the game's finally gone.

The commentary on all channels (including radio 5) before, during and after the match was a disgrace and sums up the media bias towards the big 5 clubs. The continual mention of Arsenals 9 year wait for a trophy, what about Dull City's 100 and odd year wait. I felt the same leading up to the semi, where we barely got a mention and little credit for being there. As for Adrian Chiles, i will give him a fiver if he manages not to be so smug and arrogant for 10 minutes.

Anybody else notice how much of the stadium Arsenal fans had once Hull fans had departed? They must have had 70% of the stadium. So much for 25,000 each team!

And as for the cup engraver engraving the cup with "Arsenal" with over 5 minutes to go .... don't get me started! I was praying for a last minute equaliser!

Loads of so called Arsenal fans from Birmingham or bloody Plymouth will have suddenly shown up at Wembley. Enough celebs claiming to be some sort of lifelong Arsenal fan all showed up too. I bet they all managed to find a few in the know to get hold of tickets for elsewhere in the ground.

We would have still got the same amount of seats as Hull had we got the final. A fair chunk of the Blades would have lost out on a ticket for sure.

What's the big deal about playing in Europe? Why should a trip to Estonia, or Georgia or Moldova be worth more than playing ... for example Sheffield United? Everton & Liverpool both play in Europe but playing each other is still a bigger game. If there weren't so many rules about what players you can use it may not be such a big deal but, having only just got out of The Championship, Bruce admits we're nowhere near ready to play in Europe and probably need to sign about 5 or 6 extra players just because we've qualified for Europe ... I suppose that gives us strength in depth IF they're all good signings but if we draw Lyon in the 1st round and lose, we have a load of players we signed because we we're in Europe with no income from the Europa Cup to cover the cost of hiring them ... potentially, it could be quite a financial drain on the club ... we'll see ... of course, having a bid enough squad to play in Europe, the League Cup, the FA Cup, the Premier League etc. must be great ... if you can afford it ... I don#t want us to "do a Norwich" ... spend a load of dosh and go backwards ...

Forest didn't qualify in 68-69 - see the link I posted. Derby were banned from Europe in 70-71 due to illicit payments to players.

I remember reading that Brian Clough offered a big contract to Dave Mackay to make him decide against going back to Hearts in 1968 and join Derby so were "the secret fees" made in the same offer by Clough in 1968 that got the club into trouble?

My view would be that it was because back in the day most working class men worked a half day on Saturday mornings, finishing about midday or 1pm, so time for a quick pint, walk (or tram) to the ground and in place for 3.

Actually, where there was no artificial light, where working men worked 5.5 days a week and where you were not allowed (until 1974) to play on Sunday, late Saturday afternoon was the only window within which you could actually play a winter spectator sport before it got dark.

It's no conincidence that football only got going as a commerical proposition in the late 19th century once many members of the working class no longer worked on Saturday afternoon.

As you seem to like to keep it simple and make rash generalisations I'll make one too.
If JCR turns up, plays well, has a good attitude, fits in well, tries hard and improves the team he wont be made a scapegoat.
