This is something I have thought of in the past, which the Derby game reminded me of.

It seems whenever another club celebrates survival or promotion, at full time the whole of the stands pour onto the pitch to celebrate. However, our fans and club have always made a big thing of not doing so. There are always announcements of 'please do not enter the pitch at full time' or whatever reminding us through the game, when it appears everyone else does it. Why are we different?

It's worth noting, I aren't bothered about being on the pitch, I never have been, but the question is why is our club more bothered about fans being on the pitch than others. Any ideas?

I don't think we are different. It was embarrassing last season when there was a pitch invasion after the final whistle of the 1st leg against Yeovil. Nothing had been won or achieved.

The bug bear is that some fans want to show their appreciation to the players and a pitch invasion after the Coventry game would have spoilt that.

I can understand to some extent why some fans want to go on a pitch to celebrate winning a league but, for instance,Derby,a supposed big(ish) club, invading the pitch because they might get promoted seems a little OTT to me..

Some players returning to the pitch at the Coventry game brought their youngsters out with them. Some were just 'toddlers'. If some moronic idiot had come on to the pitch followed by the rest (which is always the case) there could have been a major accident. Full marks to everyone who behaved with the dignity our fans are getting a reputation for.

Sounds like zenith fans invasion of the pitch when losing 4.2 was a bit naughty with a dynamo player being punched.
Zenith were top of the league but they've been docked points before so if they get points docked this time the fans could cost them the title

I don't think that is quite the repuation we have got with our friends at Nottingham Forest.

Thing is, we got hammered for entering the pitch both on the radio, in the press and on here vs. Forest.

City fans entered the pitch on sunday and sky sports were saying "what wonderful scenes here". "look at the jubilation on the fans". They were filming the players pushing their way to the tunnel trying to get off the pitch, I wouldn't like that. I'm not claustrophobic or anything but Joe Hart looked like he was gonna pass out.

How is it condemned if SUFC enter the pitch but praised if MCFC enter the pitch?

FWIW... I haven't been on the pitch since I was about 12 (18yrs ago) and I only went on because I thought I was being clever

Thousands did it yesterday at the Etihad, with flares and smoke bombs. It was roundly applauded as an epic celebration. If only 50 had done it, it would have been an absolute outrage with calls for every single one to be banned for life from football.

The reaction / overeaction to fans going onto the pitch is one of football's great hypocricies.

Those poor hard done to Forest fans were full of it before we played them. How Sheffield was a shithole, how they going to batter us on the pitch, and run riot in Sheffield. When the reality turned out to be somewhat different, all i heard for weeks after was nothing about the football but how i should be ashamed about how we invaded the pitch, and how we threw a smoke bomb at their disabled supporters.

I have worked in Nottingham for a long time, and their fans are just like Wednesdayites, full of delusional bullshit about how they are a big club, and how massive they are. Notts Co on the other hand are a decent set of fans who you can have a bit of decent banter with.

and this one:

Agreed, the question is do we consider that a good or a bad thing?

Fans invaded the pitch just after Cardiff scored in the last minute of out 1-0 home defeat at the end of the 1977-78 season so the ref decided to blow the final whistle early and the papers criticised our fans. We invaded the pitch after the last game of the 1978-79 and 1980-81 seasons (v Leicester and Walsall respectively) and we got into trouble because a few Leicester and Walsall players were attacked by fans.

True - but I'm not calling for routine pitch invasions, more the point how the overreaction to even the most good hearted spill onto the pitch reflects an over sanitisation of football that I personally regret.

Pitch invasions should be reserved for spontaneous acts of major success. Our only justifiable one I can remember is when we beat Forest in December 1990 after the atrocious 4 preceding months ;).

Leicester obviously counts too.

Playoff semi final pitch invasions are stupid. Did we really have one after Yeovil? I don't think we did.

Only time I'm going on is if we win a league or seal a last day promotion...

Often the key games have been away but there was one hell of a celebration after the penalty shoot out versus Coventry for the cup quarter final.

Mainly centred around the hero of the night, Alan Kelly.

They love a pitch invasion at Wolves. There were 4 when they played Rotherham at their place.

"good hearted pitch invasions"
Small one after 5-1 win v Cardiff in 1971 and a massive one in the 3-0 promotion clincher v Watford on following Saturday
Next "good hearted" was probably the 4-0 win v Peterborough in May 1982 before the final whistle was blown (I was one of them). The ref and stewards managed to make fans stand before the touclines and bylines for the last few minutes
Next one was at Leicester, then after Vinny Jones' equaliser at Villa in Dec 1990 and the 3-2 win v Forest

Just remembered the pitch invasion after the 5-1 win against Swansea in May 1989 although we didnt clich promotion yet. I was playing cricket that day! Also there were a small number of fans on the pitch after the play off home game against Bristol City in May 1988 but none of the Bristol City players were attacked. I wasnt at Darlington in 1982 and there were pitch invasions after both our goals and probably at the end of the game

Am I the only one who thinks that, as a supporter, you have no right to be on the pitch whatsoever? Despite it being wholly unnecessary (I've managed to celebrate cup quarter final wins, playoff semi final wins and promotion from my seat in the stand), it's also illegal. I routinely call for fans running on the pitch to be dragged straight into police vans by their ears and banned for life. It's utterly utterly ridiculous.

I was impressed with our behaviour after Charlton, albeit with stronger stewarding/policing as a result of Forest. There was one bloke at the bottom of JSS carrying a small child arguing with a steward that he should be allowed on the pitch. He was the only one. Possibly the most embarrassing thing I've ever seen.

When we win the league championship/FA Cup... by all means, get yourself on the pitch. I'll see you in the centre circle.

When we've got through an FA Cup tie/Play-Off game and some morons are jumping all over the players, who still have games to play, then that's just silly.

I agree with you. They shouldn't be allowed on the pitch.

What gets me is that when SUFC do it, it's all over the internet asying how much of a nobhead club we are. When SWFC beat Wycombe - it's scenes of jubilation. When Manchester City buy their 2nd PL win, it's scenes of jubilation.

Is it just me or do we get hammered for going on the pitch whereas other teams kind of get praised for their success?

I don't get the idea of invading on to the pitch, is it some unbelievable rush that you must do once in your life time?
I'm happy enough to cheer and celebrate in the stands :p

There are still some nutters who would like to attack players or try to pull out players shirts etc. Remember a Stevenage fan punching a Stevenage player to the ground? Players will always be concerned for their own safety when there are pitch invasions. They know that 99 per cent of the fans will not do anything silly but who is to know that they might be near to one or two who are looking to cause trouble?
