Best ever 1-0 wins

Great opening post Geordie Blade but wasn't Deane's nearly goal when he came on against Brighton a week or so earlier and we won 3-1? It was a storming move down the left and Deane got in a meaty header which was somehow turned away.

I really enjoyed the 1-0 over Rotherham this season, for no reason I can quite put my finger on. Evans' general arrogance coupled with the sterling performance of the kids is probably why.

It's funny that a middle of the road 2nd Division side pulling off that win is described as our best ever 1-0.
It actually happens much more frequently now which I think must be down to the fitness of pro footballers improving dramatically all the way through the Leagues.
Although it would be a shock and a great result if we beat Liverpool in a cup game nowadays it wouldn't be the result of the century anymore because at least a couple of Premier League team will go out of next years cup competitions to a lower league side.

Liverpool back then were all conquering back then in Europe as well as England

A most unexpected result.

Liverpool were the European Champions and had begun their League campaign with 10 wins and a draw from their first 11 games. We were in the bottom half of Division 2. They fielded their full strength side of Ray Clemence, Phil Neal, Phil Thompson, Emlyn Hughes, Alan Kennedy, Ray Kennedy, Terry McDermott, Graeme Souness, Steve Heighway, Kenny Dalglish and Jimmy Case.

Even better than I remember then.

You could argue that that Liverpool team would beat the current Man City and Chelsea teams and would I'm assuming have cost a lot less (even if one was to retrospectively compare the cost of putting each team together - Dalgleish worth the same as Agueiro).

Anyone who went to the 0-1 win away at Huddersfield on Valentines' Day during Danny Wilson's first season will probably tell you that's up there.

Early goal from Collins and resolute defending as a team to see us go above Wednesday into 2nd.

Perhaps it only sticks out as it's more recent, though.

This is definitely up there for me! What a great game

Nick picking, but on no.7, the goal was a penalty :)
Whitehouse was bought down for the penalty and Agana scored it.

Just thinking about this match the othe day, we drew 2-2 at the lane, drew 0-0 at oakwell, so how come the next reply was at oakwell and not the Lane?

The rule was you tossed a coin for the venue of the 2nd reply. Had there been a 3rd replay that would have been at the Lane.

Half of the Citeh and Chelsea players wouldn't dare venture out on to the pitch nowadays if Souness was in the opposition.

I quite enjoyed our 1-0 win at FA Cup holders Tottenham Hotspur in 1991/2 when Kevin Gage's low cross ended up in the back of the net. I recall Deane and Gary Mabbutt sliding in with the keeper (Thoresvedt?) and it eluded all of them. Made up for some much worse nights following the Blades in North London!

Everton away 1971 ,21st August ,didn't go but remember watching the vidiprinter on Grandstand ,when it read everton 0 sheff I was so happy and then the 1 came through ,top of the league following beatings of Leeds and Southampton. This was followed 3 days later with another amazing 1-0 win at Highbury.

I was at that Everton game Sitters, in the big stand and jumped up when we scored, fooking hell, you could have heard a pin drop before all the scousers started hurling abuse. Marvellous!

Ipswich away 1st March, 1975. Took their kop, nicked a scarf and a wild day from start to finish.

I love a one nil-er me. Especially on someone else's patch...nothing better than backs to the wall defending and charging up the other end and bagging the loot. Even better if it'in the last few minutes.
So much so I actually called my company One Nil Away Ltd

I went to Goodison a few times after that game , do you remember the 4 inch ledge that was on the back of the away standing. Hard to get on to but a great view ,but a bit precarious with Utds shooting :)

Pointless trivia: Nathan Peel was brought on for his debut in injury time in that game to wind down the clock. He never played again for the first team, which I think gives him the shortest ever United first team career.

Woody scored in both these matches. Ipswich finished 2 points behind champions Derby and we got the double over Ipswich in 1974-75 season

Cant be arsed to see if this is in there already, but I remember going to watch us beat Liverpool 1-0 at the lane and littlejohn scored, probably mid to late 90s (Darren?). Great win that day, i wish we were back up in the prem winning like that now.

12th Sept 1992. LJ's first goal for United.

Think it was the week after our derby victory against Wednesday. The Blades fans throughout the game were chanting "We beat the Wednesday (scum) 2-0" to the tune of 'Blue Moon'. On the way out of the ground, the Blades fans changed this to 'We beat the Tottenham 1-0' which prompted some scuffling with the home fans.

Yes the Liverpool 1-0 League Cup win Gary Hamson.

Not sure it's been mentioned but beating Arsenal 1-0 in the League Cup early 80's - Bobby Hatton.

a quick long kick after a corner by Keith Waugh, Hatton controlled it well, a few touches to the right of the penalty spot and hit a sweet low shot past Pat Jennings. I was in the BLUT for that game!

Ah the Bob Atkins goal at Millmoor brings back great memories, think it was Good Friday 84. My Dad had been unwell and forced to retire and was in his early 60's but I managed to coax him out of the house for his first game in a while. The pitch at Millmoor was as hard as concrete and very bad. Rotherham thought this would even things up, we were going for promotion they were fighting relegation. The ball was bouncing all over the shop in fact goal kicks were bouncing higher than the stands. Three sides of Millmoor were full of Blades and there was some scrapping on the Tivoli end. Kevin Arnott had a good looking goal disallowed much to the fury of the Blades in the crowd and it looked like a sure fire 0-0 going into the last few minutes. We got a free kick in the last minute fairly central, the ball was lofted into the area where Bob Atkins stood on the penalty spot back to goal and tightly marked controlled it on his chest and in one movement swivelled and hit an unstoppable shot into the top corner, the place went mental. Cheered my Dad up no end that did.

Ah, Nathan Peel. Up with the Tony Battersbys and Chris Bettneys of this world.

Peel goes into his trip down the leagues here in an interview a year ago: http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/sport/10487138.Peel__I_wasted_football_potential_at_Turf/

after winning promotion the return to the top division 71 saw us go top after 9 games , in the amazing run was a superb 1-0 win at Highbury and 1-0 win at Leicester where Woodward scored direct from a corner, Its memerobale for me as Kenneth manutd Wolstenholme commented on bbc motd oh what a lucky goal , then 1 week later George Best scored an identical goal and he commented , the sheer genius of the man .
luckily it was covered by local tv too

I was there! Everton were awarded a penalty and ex-Pig Dave Clements missed it.

It's quite funny how certain wins get forgotten if the time ends in ultimate disappointment. The 1-0 win against Preston in the play offs a few years ago was an unbelievable display and I don't think I have ever seen us dominate a side so much. It was definitely the most one sided 1-0 we have ever had.

Now there is an intriguing thought. Souness at his prime v. Yaya Toure.

Think my money is on Souness the hard, ruthless bastard!

I love how Souness goes for the opposition player and when he is pulled up, gets all outraged and angrily points at some invisible injury on his right leg!
