Anybody still think it's all on the manager(s)

I can't believe that he wasn't interviewed unless I hear it from the horses mouth. And you know what, I bloody well hope it's not true because of so it's incompetence of the highest order and extremely concerning!

Well, they brought Wilder back in without even considering any other managers so I can believe COH are incompetent enough to give Selles the job without an interview.

Even those with 8 figure

Or stick with those you threw a huge amount of money at too?
Think we're in the kind of mess where you've got to be bold and do something. If nothing changes, nothing changes. As an example: playing Campbell for 60 mins and replacing with Canon for last 30 mins clearly isn't working...

We have something like 35 professional players . I dont care who has some reputation , what each earns or how long they've been here. Absolutely every place in that 1st team needs to be up for grabs.

We tend to give the excuse " they see them in training ".
Fuck we see them on matchday , that's when it matters.
Too many think they're automatic picks , probably why Hamer got benched against Ipswich and the rest of them sulked .

I dont even know why I'm saying this as nothing will change .

When we go down, and we will go down with this shower, these so called stars will be off quicker than a porn stars undercrackers. I don’t think I’ve ever hated a United side as much as this. An unfit, uncaring set oF spineless mercenaries. We look like a Sunday League side, beer guts, blowing out of their arses after 46 minutes, and tactics to match. I don’t want to go down but it might clear the decks so to speak. Get in young, hungry players wanting to prove themselves. A new manager with fresh ideas, fitness a must. I want this lot to prove us wrong but I don’t see it. Fuck me, it’s depressing.
You can’t do any of that with this Board.

You’ve seen what a free rein of three months has delivered.

Imagine a totally blank slate.

If you remember back in League One in the first iteration of Tufty Ball, Knill came up with some cracking free kick/set piece routines. What happened? Did he just give up and stop bothering?

(My bold.)

I've seen a few posters on here ask that question. Since I've not seen anyone suggest the following partial explanation, I can't resist the temptation to make a first post.

Many of Knill's free kick routines employed Basham as a 'blocker' standing next to the end of the wall. Basham's job was to prevent the defender at the end of the wall from interfering with the routine.

The Law change regarding minimum distance between attackers and the defensive wall made this more difficult to do without it being an obvious foul.

Yes, managersbut players lacking confidence in themselves and leadership

Don't doubt that. But surely it's just one rule change and he could still come up with different ways of being creative?

Wilder

Season 1 prem - we won loads of games 1-0 or drew 0-0 or 1-1.

Season 2 prem - narrow wins turned in to draws and draws in to defeats = relegation

Wilder

Season 1 champ - narrow wins by the odd goal and scrappy draws.

Season 2 champ - narrow wins turn to defeats and draws in to defeats.

This was always going to happen regardless of Selles

Wilder was a busted flush after premier league season 2020.21

However, had Wilder not been sacked & had his targets - he’d have signed Dunne & Darling & McBurnie. Probably not sold Moore - although Vini / Anel would have gone. So I bet we’d have most likely been comfortably in the top half at this stage.

Dunne signed a new contract at QPR/ Darlings doing fuck all at a struggling Norwich! So only Mcburnie left and we all knew about him in his time at the lane, not a lot of confidence then in all of them!

The loans stick out as being really poor this season.

When you look back on our loan players of previous years in the championship:
Rak-Saki, Bereton, Souttar, McAtee, Doyle, Gibbs-white, Henderson. I know there were others making up the numbers in those years too, but we’ve repeatedly found real value in the loan market when we’ve been in the championship over the past 6 or 7 seasons: this year the quality just seems much lower.
The loan market is hugely important to championship clubs, and we seem to have got it all wrong this time.
AI AI AI oh 😳

There was one v Southampton. We’re you there?

In fairness we do actually have a squad of "young, hungry players wanting to prove themselves"...we've the third youngest squad in the league. It was the same last year but the difference was we had a smattering of lads over 25 who also had quality to help the young lads along.

We have not replaced a single player adequately that we lost in the summer - not one.

I would say we improved the CB with eventually selling Robbo and Anel and replacing him with Tanganga and Mee. Although Anel was a decent player he could be error prone at times. The problem is that Godfrey isn't a RB or RWB and it's a bit of a stretch for Ogbene to play there. Same with Burrows this season he has been caught lacking (not the only one) in defence duties. The biggest loss was by far Souza as the replacements are too young and not experienced (Matos and Soumare) if you play a DM you need to have an experienced player in there that can read the game and pick out a pass. Matos probably has the more potential however it is more of a future signing.

Not sure how any of those move the needle in this system.

I'd be inclined to agree. I think we've done ok with the recruitment at the back with Mee and Tanganga, notwithstanding also carrying McGuinness, Godfrey, Bindon and Zatterstrom who we've yet to see but overall the squad is bloated with players who we're saddled with on long deals or need sending back to their parent clubs.

Everybody else we've signed has brought little to nothing to the party and we've replaced guaranteed starters with players who wouldn't have even made the squad last season, never mind started matches. We downgraded the squad, massively downgraded our position in the table and the existing players who are left seem to have lost all semblance of form, fitness and confidence.

Going through last season's team squad - Gilchrist (returned), Arblaster (long term injured), Souttar (injured/loan return), Brewster (mostly crap but would be involved in most games if he was here), Moore (can do a job that we desperately need at the moment), JRS (loan return), Anel, Souza, Choudhury, BBD would all be in and around the starting line up if they were still here. Even a donut like Harry Clarke would get in ahead of

Looking back, I don't think players like McGoldrick or Sharp have ever been properly replaced and we've been making do with Robinson in place of O'Connell who beside being Scouse defenders with the same first name couldn't be further apart in terms of ability.

Agreed and add Leon Clarke from that era of strikers, and MF/DF Baldock, Fleck and Bash, With Ndiaye (once in a generation academy player to be fair) of more recent generation.

Never adequately replaced Deane and Agana

Fucking hell that's pissed me off seeing it in writing.

The whole lot would've probably cost us less than a £2million outlay at most. McBurnie reportedly was keen to come back too, was offering to have a trial period etc and the club turned him down! Absolutely ridiculous decision, especially when you factor in Moore being sold.
