Do you go along to Blades matches for the entertainment, or are you one of those that would prefer a crap 1-0 win against Cardiff to a thrilling 4-4 draw at Old Trafford? Either way is fine, but there's no reason that 1-0 wins have to boring. My top 10 single goal victories are below (I've been going since 1983). The list is a bit biased towards seasons where we did well, but that probably reflects the fact that 1-0 wins tend to need some context.

1. SUFC 1-0 Arsenal (30.12.2006). Nade, Nade, Nade. Kenny off injured, whilst Jags is the calmest man in the ground keeping goal for the last 30 minutes. Amazing atmosphere that night.

2. Mansfield 0-1 SUFC (04.04.1989). Don't be folled by the April date. This was the coldest temperature eer recorded on Earth, but Bob Booker didn't care. He wore short sleeves and won us a penalty in the snow, which Duffield tucked away to set us up into a promotion spot, which we held onto.

3. SUFC 1-0 Palace (30.04.06). Last game of the season. Promotion in the bag. Opposition goalkeeper attired by Matalan. Party atmosphere. Deane, in his third stint at the Lane, off the bench and nearly scores. We’d still be celebrating now, if that had gone in.

4. Luton 0-1 SUFC (26.12.90). Following up on our first win of the season 4 days earlier, we went to Luton's plastic pitch. Away fans were not allowed at Luton then, but I remember the Greast Chip Butty song drifting around the stadium, from no particular area, as the hidden Blades were dotted all around the ground. I think it was this game, rather than the Forest game, that gave us the belief that we could stay up that season.

5. SUFC 1-0 Leeds (09.03.03). The second time we beat top-flight Leeds that season. This time with a huge sliced goal from Kabba (though thoroughly deserved).

6. SUFC 1-0 Sheffield Wednesday (03.12.05). It wasn't a great game, but any win against the Snortbeasts deserves to get in a list. Plus, our goal was technically offside, as Shipperly touched it as it went over the line. Ha.

7. Barnsley 0-1 SUFC (05.03.90). After 310 minutes of football couldn't separate us and Barnsley, Tony Agana raced clean through in extra time of the second replay to put us 1-0 up, and set up a quarter final with Manchester United.

8. Fulham 0-1 SUFC (04.02.14). Last minute of extra time. Surely they can't do it? They can, you know!

9. SUFC 1-0 Arsenal (17.01.96). FA Cup replay. Carl Vearte, and a little reminder that we could still compete against the best teams when we wanted to.

10. Cardiff 0-1 SUFC (14.04.06). Although we wouldn't be technically promoted until later that day when Leeds failed to win, this was the game that sealed our return to the top flight. Not a cracker, but who cared?

I left out three different 1-0 wins in the pay-offs (Preston, Stevenage and Yeovil) all because, ultimately, they led to failure so didn’t seem enough. The same could be said for my first choice or the cup games, but they feel different for some reason. I’m sure I’ve forgotten a few others.

Preston, Stevenage and Yeovil.

Fortess Bramall Lane in the play offs before the inevitable fuck up.

Stevenage being the pick of the three because of Porter's late header.

Nick picking, but on no.7, the goal was a penalty :-)

Anyone who went to the 0-1 win away at Huddersfield on Valentines' Day during Danny Wilson's first season will probably tell you that's up there.

Early goal from Collins and resolute defending as a team to see us go above Wednesday into 2nd.

Perhaps it only sticks out as it's more recent, though.

Forest at Home in the late 90's a Gareth Taylor screamer 10 mins from the end...

Everton away 1971 ,21st August ,didn't go but remember watching the vidiprinter on Grandstand ,when it read everton 0 sheff I was so happy and then the 1 came through ,top of the league following beatings of Leeds and Southampton. This was followed 3 days later with another amazing 1-0 win at Highbury.

Arse at home 1-0 head and shoulders for me. Unexpected and with Jags in net for 20 mins a real evening of excitement.

Oh and 1-0 away at Wigan, memorable for me not being there but sat in the boozer at the Clique Christmas do seeing Big Mary get totally hammered and later chatting up some ladies who batted for Lancashire. Its personal!

Think it was Dave Bassetts first game, a 1-0 win against Barnsley scored (I think) by Tony Agana in injury time. I Might have some of the facts wrong but I remember the place going absolutely mental.

First time I ever saw United win - I was being held up by Dad next to the floodlight pylon on the Kop. It was Agana who raced through to score. I could be wrong, but I think it was Agana's debut (it was early 1988).

It came on the back of 0-5 defeat at home to Oldham (my first ever game - and I still came back) and a 0-1 home defeat to (I think) Shrewsbury Town. It could only get better :)

Portsmouth at home appprox 1986.

Four players sent off, 3 for them plus Beagrie.

We were camped in their half but could not find a goal, until Paul Mariner managed to score us an own goal in front of the Bramall Lane end. Then the crowd went crazy!

Also remember another by Agana at Huddersfield in the cup.
Hit a rocket into the roof of the net and what seemed like a million Blades went mental on the big open air end at Leeds Road.
Used to be able to find this goal on youtube but cannot for the life of me find it now.

1-0 away to Southend in Division 4. Last minute Kevin Arnott ran through and scored ,Heffernan ran the full length of the pitch and dived on him ,we knew we were up at that point. An amazing weekend in Canvey Island and London followed .

Arsenal one tops for me, also Rotherham this season as mentioned.

Another that sticks in my memory is when we beat Portsmouth in Warnock's first league game, Devlin got the ball from their corner and ran the lenght of the pitch before scoring a cracker.

28th August 1978 - League Cup Round 2

Sheffield United 1-0 Liverpool

Current European Champions, packed with internationals. We were a middle to struggling 2nd divsion (as then) team.

Unbelievable Jeff!
I was thinking Leeds to deny them the title away after we had already been relegated in 75? but this has to top even that.

What a night. One Gary Hamson, there's only one Gary Hamson

And me, I have never felt so completely elated coming out of Bramall Lane and don't expect to do so, ever again.

The Charlton QF came close, but The Beard spoilt it by making it 2-0, so it doesn't qualify :-)

Two matches at the Lane I remember going to before I became a committed Blade in Jan 1970 were both 1-0 wins. Against norwich and Cardiff in Sept 1969. Tudor and Reece were the scorers respectively.

Other great 1-0 wins not mentioned here

1. the League Cup against the Mighty L**ds in Sept 1970, we attacked from the start, Tudor had a shot that hit the woodwork in the 1st minute and we had many chances to open the scoring in the 1st half. We didnt get a break until midway in the 2nd half when TC received the ball in the middle and got off in a solo run (the space was created by the L**ds players watching Woody on the wing) before firing in a ground shot past Gary Sprake. Don Revie admitted after the game that we were deserved winners

2. Ted Hemsley's low header against Sunderland in Feb 1971. Sunderland's Jim Montgomery made several saves until Ted's late breakthrough

3. Woody's corner goal against Peter Shilton at Leicester in Sept 1971. It was scored with 5 mins remaining and we remained at the top of the league, the game was on MOTD!

4. Stewart Scullion's piledriver against Chelsea in front of over 40,000 crowd a week later

5. Was at boarding school when we beat Liverpool at home in Sept 1974. I wasnt allowed to watch "The Big Match" on TV cos of compulsory Sunday Walk but the Head Boy (Derby fan who admired TC) described the goal to me. Lovely crossfield pass by TC that Woody expertly controlled and carried it to the box before placing it past Ray Clemence (goal can be seen in the 125 years you tube goals)

6. Woody's 25 yarder against David Harvey at L**ds in April 1976. A memorable moment in a very poor season. There was some fighting near where I stood

Bassett's first match was the 2-1 FA Cup defeat at Pompey and his first home match was the 1-0 defeat against Shrewsbury. The Agana injury time winner against Barnsley was Bassett's 2nd home game

I can remember beating Leeds 1-0 at the Lane on 11th November 1967. Hodgy was injured very early on and Woody went in goal - no sub goalies then! I expected us to get a hammering but Woody played a blinder and Mick Hill scored a second half goal to give us an unlikely win.

Sheffield United 1 Liverpool 0 Tony Currie 45 yard tap in
Reading 0 sufc 1 midweek game vital win

Sheffield united 1 swfc 0

Beat me to it definitely our best 1-0

Highlights of that match were on ATV in the next day. Would have loved to see a video of the match

We've had it pretty good compared to some clubs.

The phrase 'always the bridesmaid, never the bride' suits us to a T but there are some clubs who never even get invited to the wedding.

Beat me to it definitely our best 1-0

It's funny that a middle of the road 2nd Division side pulling off that win is described as our best ever 1-0.
It actually happens much more frequently now which I think must be down to the fitness of pro footballers improving dramatically all the way through the Leagues.
Although it would be a shock and a great result if we beat Liverpool in a cup game nowadays it wouldn't be the result of the century anymore because at least a couple of Premier League team will go out of next years cup competitions to a lower league side.

Referee books the entire Liverpool wall at a free kick, Gary Hamson - I love you.

Unbelievable Jeff!

Fixed it for you SEB.
