What's wrong with Gus?

I genuinely don't think it because he didn't get a move, by all accounts he's actually very happy here.

Some players do suffer a loss of form periodically, and as said, maybe he is going through personal stuff. I'm confident he will be back to his best.

An alarming loss of form by Gus. Maybe he wanted to be off in the recent transfer window.
Needs to up his game or no-one will want him in the next window.
On his current form, and the way we feel obliged to play him, I wouldn’t be cry if someone did make a bid for Gus in January.

He's still our best attacking player by an absolute country mile. His vision and ability to create a chance for himself or others being so far ahead of anything else means it stands out even more when he has a below par run and nobody else is capable of stepping up

Also Selles eroded his confidence. It takes a while for it to recover after being criticised every week when you're trying your best with a new strange system. Then you get dropped.

Are we leaning on Gus too much, because that vision and obvious ability is in short supply at the moment. Apart that audacious free kick to put O’Hare in on goal, he was a bit part player against Soton on Tuesday night.

Looks frustrated and lacking a bit of confidence. The things he was doing last year aren't coming off yet, was plenty of examples the other night. Imperative he gets back into some form asap though.

Way too reliant on him. Without him and occasionally Burrows, there's so little threat.

We were a low scoring team last season. This current squad will struggle to get to 45 goals

Has he actually ‘lost form’ though? Pure eye test & no actual stats to back this up, but I feel like he’s performing at a comparatively similar standard to last season? (I’m sure someone could dig some stats up to completely blow this theory up)

He’s a bit of a conundrum for me. I can’t help but think he’s a bit of a luxury player that has occasional magic in his boots, but doesn’t really contribute otherwise. Our biggest issue this season has, IMO, been in midfield and I feel like Hamer being in it exasperates the problem. I also think Wilder recognises this, which is why he spent so much of last season out on the left.

Too many fry ups

Too fat and small to be a elite player.

As in the post above he's a luxury player and we are in the trenches right now.

Needs something to come off for him. And he might kick into more regular form I reckon.

The squad needs moments like that individually and as a team. Would have been a boost to have had Peck's goal stand. You'd then be talking about 4 PTS across the last two games. Which feels like a marked improvement.

If the oft-alluded personal situation is correct, difficult to see how things change until they do. Best for both parties to work to a solution in January.

We wont get much, but enough to get some big runarounders in to enhance survival chances.

Thought he played a lot better against Southampton. The free kick was on target and if the wall hadn't been so near the goalie would have had a save to make.

Yes, there’s no denying Gus’s little moments of brilliance, but he’s our talisman midfielder, he should be dictating much more of our play and driving the team forward. The opposition should be in fear every time he gets on the ball…But sadly our little dynamo is playing well within himself at the moment.

Confidence is a big thing atm once we start winning he'll be back up to speed

Gus might not be the problem.

Football is a team game and if the other 10 on the pitch aren't pulling there weight, no matter how good you are, if you dont get given the ball or you have no options to give the ball, then you aren't going to play well.

Most have noted over the end of last season and start of this season, the drop off in form throughout the squad.

We see names mentioned on here of the players who have dropped off.

The hardest thing is to find a player that's improved.

I suspect there could be only 1 or 2 players at most, that can be listed from probably March last season (of last seasons players) and that we have signed in the summer that have improved us -
Tanganga and errrrrrrrr

Just a thought.

Following on from my post above (missed the edit window), listing players from last season that are even at the same levels from last March is difficult.

It’s a tricky one because Gus is clearly our best player. But I think a big decision might be made by the board in January - we look a million miles away from getting anywhere near the playoffs, so from a financial POV it probably makes sense to try and cash in on Gus before he enters the last year of his contract. Especially if we’ve moved away from the bottom 3 but are too far away from the top 6 come Jan.

Ideally we then reinvest the money to address the imbalance in the squad & start building for next season. I love Gus but he is a luxury that we’ve been reliant on & we do carry him in some ways.

We need to really address the midfield over the next 12 months as currently we have a midfield that generally don’t create enough, don’t score enough, aren’t physical enough and aren’t defensively strong. Other than that we’re in a good place!

It was a great attempt at something different and unlucky it didn't pay off. It must have been a training ground piece similar to the bouncing day massacre. From that distance we do have several options and the chance of being able to score directly is always going to be slim for the quality of players we have but a well thought out set piece is definitely the way forwards

His passing seems to have dropped off big style. He needs to get the basics right, get fit and stop moaning to the ref all the time. Come on Gus get back in the zone!!!
