Trouble, Stewards and crowd control

Obviously a big goal and big occasion for Charlton but not seen fans and a bench celebrate like that at Lane for years. All bench on pitch with some of their fans.

The stewards were more interested in repairing the advertising boards their fans had knocked down, than stopping them running around the perimeter of the pitch.

No issue with them celebrating as they did but away fans seem to get away with a lot more here than we do or would elsewhere.

What are stewards actually expected to do? I am interested in what their role actually is.

Reason I ask is At Ipswich they seemed obsessive about keeping the walk ways free of people and then seemed to get a bit heavy handed when some idiot decided to climb up the metal girders. I get that they could have hurt themselves but what it turned into was grown men pushing, shoving and falling down the stairs and almost squashing quite a young girl (luckily for safe standing bars which meant no one actually got squashed).

I appreciate they aren't paid much but I just find it strange how different grounds seem to have a different approach.

Years ago we had security on the away end who seemed to like a bit of rough and tumble but for a good while now, by and large anyway, we seem happy to allow away fans to roam on to the pitch and just walk back into the stand. Maybe retrospective action gets taken from camera footage.

I just know that at many away grounds you wouldnt get such a free reign.

I accept that the Charlton players would be elated at scoring - but is it allowable for subs to race onto the pitch - half the length of it? Don't know the rules but surely that can't be allowed. I dread to think what would have happened if that had been in front of the Kop!

Our stewards used to be way too heavy handed towards away fans. In the past I've actually emailed the club about this.
I didn't find much wrong with their behaviour Saturday. Mind you I had my head in my hands in dismay at the time.

I’m all for big celebrations. It feels necessary as var squeezes the joy out so much top level football.

If fans can’t take it without turning violent then the issue lies with them.

To be honest I think there has to be some responsibility from both players and fans. Thinking about it , I doubt the Charlton players would have celebrated like that in front of the Kop

Crossing the barriers is a criminal offence, not a club rule where local variation applies.

We have had a player attacked and injured (Billy) and a player taken to court for defending himself (McBurnie) we should have learned our lesson by now and enforce this to the letter of the law.

One of their shithead subs gave us the middle finger of both hands when they scored. OK. celebrate but thats just going to antagonise the natives. One of their fans was getting on my tits giving it the big one to us when they scored. Blond curtain haircut, very Shaun Ryder. Would have made a good tramp if he smartened his self up the scruffy Cockney wanker.

That's why I find it a bit bizarre how you get such a varied approach at some clubs

Charlton came up through the play offs and were winning away at what they thought would be one of the best teams in the division. I don’t blame them for being excited. I might have missed something, but I didn’t really see any real trouble from the Charlton fans?
Wasn't trouble i was on about...

Where did you sit btw? South stand gangway F me so had a good view of it all.

Sorry if I misunderstood - the thread title is about trouble, so I assumed you were saying the Charlton fans had caused trouble.
I sit on John St, but like someone above I had my head in my hands when the goal went in, so might well have missed whatever happened with the away fans and stewards...

Yeah couldn't be arsed making a new thread 😂

Nah no trouble.. just the last minute winner had all their bench on pitch celebrating and fans trying to get to them over the boards I thought wasnt allowed.

Reverse the position. We've just been promoted from League One, are away to arguably the biggest team in the Championship, score a last minute winner in front of our fans. I think the players and fans would have behaved EXACTLY the same.

Ahh so its allowed. Least I'll remember that for future games.

🎯Without a doubt !

I mentioned a couple of weeks back about away from the stewarding inside the ground I thought SYP were about as useful as an inflatable dartboard after the Millwall game , there scuffles kicking off all over while the them & it looked like a free for all & they took whatever direction they appeared to want to go . You just knew there was gonna be a tinder box up near the Panenka & loan behold there was . What made laugh was about half a dozen ‘wall fans just up from us charged up to a group of Blades acting up and the closeby SYP’s decisive response was to turn their go pros on the Utd fans waiting to film any response to the inciting ??
The police were absolutely fkg useless made up of the youth club , weight watchers week 1 inductees & the lobotomy waiting list ?
