It's a free hit for CW if he does come back.

If results stay similar to the end of last season (very poor, but a lot better than this season), he and his supporters will just blame the players Selles signed, despite most of his supporters saying that he would get more out of these players than Selles would.

Let's be fair, most could get a better tune out of these players than Selles did.

Selles had to go, but im not sure bringing CW back is the best option, unless there is a DofF who can build something with CW and then let the build continue when he leaves.

I'd say it's about level after he let a couple of hundred mill slip through his fingers twice last season

How will Selles balance sheet look if he is retained and we spend another 6 years in League 1 though?

Better to try and come close than not be able to try at all.

I do wonder if perhaps Wilder just got lost down that tunnel at Wembley, so the board just thought they'd better get someone else in just in case he didn't reappear

Has one person ever milked so much from a club after one successful stint? He’s effectively getting paid twice by us now, a compensation package now a new contract, yet some laud him as the second, well third, coming.
I really don't care as long as he turns this shit-show around and gets us moving up the league. It's not my money, it's not coming out of my pocket.

You know what................ I fuckin hate social media and football forums. The same old 30 or 40 people dominate this board and unfortunately are presumed to be the voice of the whole fanbase. Well you are not. Reading some of the threads on here is like watching a debate between Conservative Christians and Atheists. No arguments, however valid the points, will be listened to and accepted by the other party.

Many many of the fanbase, such as me, actually do look at things in a realistic and pragmatic way. Selles really should go and go now. Ideally we should have time to analyse the situation and bring in a successor to better fulfil the vision of the Owners. However, due to their sheer incompetence they do not have that privilege. Our season is in deep danger of being over before it has even began - then we will be in the deep and murky oceans of having a squad with a decreasing value and high wage commitment without the luxury of parachute payments. Then the real pain starts.

That is why Wilder is the man for the job now. Ok, I am on record as saying I was/am a Wilder fan but tentatively agreed that maybe it was time for a change in direction following the play off defeat. Well, look where that got us. We do not have the luxury of affording another gamble on an unproven manager - so either the Owners get another been there/done that type of manager - who???? or go for the safe option of Wilder who we all know will steady the ship - at least in the short/medium term.
The silent MAJORITY are always out shouted by the noisy MINORITY. This is a proven fact in life and unfortunately even more so on social.

Don't let them get to you pal.

They're showing a bigger set of balls to right a bad decision than compound it and double down with another long shot.
They could still extend if that was the case, if they put in him as caretaker manager on a deal till January. In December if results and performances have improved you offer the 2/3 year deal. Without any fan involvement on the board we don’t know their long term thought process

92 points last season masks the fact that most games we could’ve lost 1-0, we had a horrendous record against the top teams and still managed to bottle autos and the playoffs.

The question shouldn’t be is CW coming back, it should be why hasn’t he gone anywhere else?

What a way to divide further an already divided fan base.

Oh well, at least he’ll beat Charlton and thump his chest in front of the Kop.

He won’t be getting paid twice. The compensation for losing his job is normally only paid until he takes another job. It just so happens that job is with us.

I'm looking forward to seeing how it leaves out the players he didn't sign. Eight was it? Should be interesting.

Tanganga mentioned in his interview we were in for him in January so that one shouldn’t be a problem.

He’ll know all about the others from playing against us. Only first teamer he may not know much about is Soumare.

Dyche isn't coming here. He'd be mad to come here after his career.

We missed the boat with Challinor before he signed a new contract at Stockport. But he's not a Blade so the kop wouldn't be happy with him either.
The Kop and anyone else would be happy with any Manager who wins matches and whose team gives 100% effort. I think most were happy with Bassett and Kendall for example.
I also couldn't give a toss whether a Manager waves to me after a devastating loss.

Looks like Ruben's been sacked and Chris by all rumours seems to be back in charge.

Let me start this by saying I'm happy he's back in the immediate term and we look fucking hopeless and desperately need to get someone in charge who in knows what they're doing.

The Chris Wilder sticking plaster takes its third dawn.

Quite what the owners expected sacking him to try their own thing in the summer with no football people in between them absolutely beats me. He's a head coach. And he was tasked with changing our whole style and philosophy with 2 coaches and that's it.

Was he ever worthy of the United job? Probably not. Was he ever going to be given a fair crack of the whip by half the fanbase? Definitely not. So he was off on a bad footing anyway, paired with the above it was always doomed to fail.

The rhetoric around his sacking in the week or so leading up to it was that the board was 'split' - there's 7 board members making decisions. They need to entrust one man to make these calls, and I don't mean a manager. Football is too vast now, the manager has enough to focus on with just the team, this is why teams like Brighton, Bournemouth, actual progressive teams can lose a manager and carry on as before. Because there is structure around and above them allowing them to thrive. Unfortunately for Selles he never had that (whether he was up to the job or not).

The issue comes if it starts to go pear shaped with Chris, will they ever dare to sack him again?

I'm excited about him coming back IF we are putting together a football knowledgable team together at board level and below. It can't just be the 7 man board, Steve Bettis and Chris Wilder. Or we are destined to be only ever managed by people who 'know the club' and that gives you a very limited pool of people and most often none of them are exciting.

We're in some sort of Peterborough cinematic universe at the minute, where they can't get away from Darren Ferguson.

We can't keep going back to Chris Wilder. It just shows an ineptitude at board level from both this and the previous board in developing us as a football club to bring us in line with the 21st century. That needs to change, and I hope Chris is involved in making that happen. It's important there's some United DNA in making these decisions it seems.

Good luck Chris; you can't do any fucking worse! ⚔️
Football is overthought.

Just appoint a guy who wins football matches.

I keep hearing about a DoF. When the players he brought in don’t perform, does he get sacked too? Or does he always have a get out and blame the manager?

What happens when the DoF leaves? Or does he have to remain under lock and key? Aren’t up just as susceptible to the whims of the next guy?

Celtic have recruitment managed outside of just the Manager. What Rodgers produces an absolute shit show in Europe, he’s straight in there criticising the club’s recruitment.

Whichever model you go for, you’re always going to be susceptible to the quality of your hiring. Hire good people, do well. Don’t, and you don’t.

i'd have sounded out Stockport, new contract or not. Would have been my first choice. Still we never miss out on an opportunity to make ourselves a laughing stock (sigh).

How much did we pay for him? Would be interesting to know what they wanted for him in Jan compared to what we paid for him. He would have been a great signing in January and maybe would have been the one that got us over the line.

Why is appointing the best manager available who would come considered to be panicking?

Because the recruitment process appears to have been completed in less than 24 hours. If COH have only spoken to Wilder and no one else, how do they know Wilder is the best manager available?

So Wilder wanted him? How ironic irony that we sign a player we wanted in January when we had a manager that apparently refused to conform to the Boards recruitment model.

Fair point, but considering the names suggested, it's a no-brainer. Also, as the board were split on firing Wilder, it's not really a recruitment process in the traditional sense; it is reflecting and returning to the previous position.

Yes Friday night happened completely out of the blue and it was all going so well before the international break 🤷‍♂️

So you’re saying they’ve been speaking to other managers? Seems unlikely, I very much doubt that would’ve been kept secret.

What a wonderful forward thinking club we have. Absolutely brilliant stuff. Not morons at all and definitely doesn’t stink of a cult of personality.

That ironically lies with the people who can't focus on the football factors and have to focus on their anti Wilder voodoo doll. The anti Wilders. If it's based purely on football factors and not the cult of personality they've built in their minds he'd still be manager. I agree that it's embarrassing for them.

COH shot themselves in foot more ways than one. Wilder left as not wanting to work under COH way then if he is invited back will be on his terms not theirs as he has the power to dictate terms to some degree

The new owners have corrected the big mistake of appointing selles and sacked him.
Sir Chris Wilder is coming back, great news under the circumstances. The players will be delighted. They will know the tactics we must start winning.
41 games to play, I think we will win most of them. Last season was a freak with two clubs getting 100 points. We had the highest points total and did not get promoted in the history of the championship. Losing the playoff final that we should have won is history now. I dont think any club will get 100 points this season.
However, we can challenge and get into the top two automatic promotion places. We have bought in good players. up the blades.

The throwing of toys out the pram from the ones who loved mocking anyone upset when he went is glorious. This isn't Ruben Sellés FC you need to get behind the new man.
Yep. Those who opposed Wilder's sacking were 100% behind Selles. Hope those who applauded Wilder's sacking will do the same now.
