Incoming? Chris Mempham

He wasn’t consistently in the Sunderland team at the end.

As well as being younger, Tanganga is quicker and a better ball carrier.

Mepham is a good stopper but I do feel Tanganga is more suited to us.

I think mephan is a decent championship player and would be happy to have him but the way hamer left him for dust at wembley would slightly worry me a bit

At 27 years old and 6'4 Mepham does tick a lot of boxes as a rock at the back. I don't want to get on the bandwagon of saying you need to be tall to be good, but I like having at least one big experienced unit at CB (Souttar being a prime example). Tanganga, Godfrey, JLT, and Mee have the experience but aren't exactly imposing or going to be dominant in the air (all around six foot nothing). Nils and Bindon are a few inches taller but don't have the experience.

yeah good signing at a good price for baggies but weve just signed our number 1 centre back target think he was only ever a 2nd choice for us

Cannot believe he has gone for the figure quoted when Rangers were supposed to be negotiating at around the £12m mark

I
I feel like having quick defenders, at least CBs, is rarely a difference maker at championship level
f we're playing this high press then we need fast defenders to get back though. That might all change of course if Selles goes but let's hope he gets his first win on Saturday

I dont rate O'Nien who is too small to be a central defender but he was picked ahead of Mempham for the starting line up in the play offs. I wouldnt even pay £1.5M for O'Nien.

Wrongly picked ahead of Mepham.

Unfortunately, we stopped having it all our own way when Mepham came on for O'Nien.

I'm not suggesting Mepham's a world beater, I'm much happier with the Tanganga signing. But at £1m (+£500k potential add-ons), it's a very good value signing and one I'd not have been opposed to.
At only 27, he's still a decent age too and would have helped future proof an area we're still quite light in for next season (only Tanganga and an inexperienced Zatterstrom will be contracted).

Didn't Mepham score the bullet header which put them into the PO final - I like a big lad at CB - for £1m we should have been in for him - Mepham & Tanganga , there's a bit of stature to keep the Kieffer Moores out

I’m still not convinced that’s the fee. He’d have a lot more options than West Brom for a fee that low.

I just like at least one big lad (like 6'3" JoC) to be a first choice CB.

And neither Bindon nor Zatterstorm appear to be that.

All the rest are 6 foot nowt and , of them , the starters would appear to be Tanganga & (left-foot) Mee , with Godfrey as backup ,
and Bindon & Zatterstorm as young hopefuls.

Unless Godfrey is first choice RB.

I wonder if it was Tanganga's ability to cover RB which put him over Mepham , coz the deal for the latter seems much better on the face of it (both same age).

Maybe Selles sees Seriki as an attacker or a DM (not a RB) ?

Anyway , we've at least got a bit of cover at CB & RB now.

Will Robbo leave ?
