Cannon

I'm still so fucking confused by this signing.
Nobody wanted him.
He's slow.
He's weak.
He's no footballing intelligence.
He's no positional sense.
He presses at completely the wrong time and then doesn't press when it's needed.
He cannot pass a ball.
He doesn't have the skill/pace to get past anyone.

I'm baffled.

A 10m striker shouldn't need to be fed sitters constantly to show signs of ability
Have to agree, some want him to be an old fashioned bog liner and everyone else just put tap ins on a plate for him, not being funny but even at my age I could do that and get a couple of goals a season. I’d have zero else to my game though and unfortunately Cannon looks to have also have zero else to his overall game.

One of his main issues is he's always on his heels. If you watch him closely he's always a few tenths of a second slower to react then the defenders. And that means he's always second to the ball, doesn't have the pace to make up for it.

By comparison, watch Campbell and his movements are proactive. The defenders movements are dictated by his. Doesn't always work out, but Cannon's movements are reactive and never work out.

And he's useless in the air

I don’t rate Cannon but he’s a poacher and as already pointed out tonight we had 1 (ONE) touch in Birmingham’s box today, you just knew people would watch the overall performance today and still find a way to single Cannon out.

Be careful stating the obvious these days, forum full of pigs who will disagree..

Where’s the evidence he’s a poacher?

He doesn’t demonstrate any instinct, has zero movement and as someone else pointed out, is always on his heels, a second behind the game

So what you're basically saying is that when Cannon is on the pitch, we may as well play with 10 players?
Glad we agree

You missed his appalling first touch,

You've just compared Tom Cannon, That's Tom I'm not going to bother even challenging for this 50/50 Cannon and Billy Sharp? Really?

Not to sound mean but that's the worst take I've ever read on here.
I’ve not actually compared them like for like, what I said was that Billy Sharp made a career out of poaching, with a fairly limited all round game.

I already said earlier in the thread that I don’t rate Cannon but we aren’t playing to his strengths.

fairly limited all round game.
This is one of the biggest myths perpetuated on this board.

Sharp offered so much more than just tap ins and was far from limited.

He:

Made intelligent runs in behind and to the channels.
Was very reactive to situations and able to often anticipate where the ball would be.
Had brilliant upper body strength and could hold the ball up well against much bigger defenders.
Often won a lot of 50/50s and put defenders u der intense amounts of physical pressure which allowed us to win the ball higher up the pitch.
Actually had a decent pass on him and could assist quite a bit too.
Was a pretty decent header of a football for his size.

None of which are qualities that Cannon posseses.

I don't know that one. Is it The Manic Street Preachers?

Yeah that’s fair, and I agree Sharp was a vastly superior player and a direct comparison is bordering on the ridiculous in the sense that Cannon essentially offers nothing on the pitch - which would be fine if he was scoring which clearly he isnt. Again I wasn’t trying to directly compare them, although yeah it probably looked like that.

It just annoys me that one of the first things that happens on here after a bad result is a pile on on Cannon - there’s a thread on him for ‘United’s form with Cannon on the pitch’ which I think is hugely unfair.

Yes he’s been massively disappointing, and in a way I don’t even know why I’m defending him but it just seems he’s the first person everyone jumps on and I don’t think all the criticism is warranted.
