So you’re another poster who think they have some insight into what the owners are prepared to spend? That’s ok, there are a few of you, but it isn’t based on anything at all. Probably best to wait & see what happens.

I can’t argue with most of what you say Nick and yes I await to see what happens

Loan signings go back (with no obligation to buy if don’t go up) permanent signings on 3-4 year contracts saddle us with higher wage bills for seasons to come

I’m not sure how much money this consortium has or is willing to invest?
So
Spend likely?) £1m loan fees (& salaries) for “3-4 years but not £2m on a permanent signing who will be a (potentially) saleable asset during that time if they ‘perform’
Whereas well performing loanees likely end up out of our price bracket & require replacing the following season (with another loanee?) & everything disruptive that entails including familiarity tactics, team mates environment/ ethos relocation, family

Like you I have the sum total of absolutely SFA insight into e how much money this consortium has or is willing to invest, but I'll hazard a guess they may, including how to best spend the brass at their disposal

Well of course when you put it like that, why the fk are we bothering with loans in the first place?

I’m not saying it’s ideal and I would prefer permanent signings, so ask yourself why Selles put the emphasis on loans and frees? Loans reduce the long term risk. Spend £1m on a loan fee this season don’t go up spend £0.5m on a loan fee the following season. Don’t go up, then the following season loans with no fees just freebie loans with just a season or half season salary liability. All relative to an ever decreasing budget, (eg no parachute payments) or else why does every club in the land bother with loans in the first place? Let’s just all go out and buy every player on a 5 year deal it’s easy init? A loan may also enable the club to perhaps bring a better calibre of player in on a short term deal that otherwise we couldn’t afford to buy. I would argue most deals in the PL and EFL are loans?

Selles says it’s to be loans and frees. I think he added that there’s money there should he need to spend some. Let’s see what happens.

If we spend some money on transfer fees I’ll be one of the first to say well done

But it’s not binary is it?
As you identify borrow players that will improve the squad team (almost) immediately who would otherwise (likely) be unattainable, buy players that will (likely) ‘contribute’ over the long(er) term (+ potential sale ‘value’)
The approach is (should be) complementary informed by the specific value / cost of each deal within the wider strategy
I’m not aware of Selles stating “t’s to be loans and frees”?

If Premier League clubs weren't allowed to hoard players, there would be half the amount of loans. Current system helps the rich stay rich and helps keep the poor in their place. Familiar theme worldwide.

Off to Boro for £3.5m. Good signing. Another RB bites the dust.

Maybe we were never interested though. I'd like to see how Seriki does this season, at least at the beginning, to see whether we need to try and sign an upgrade on Seriki or whether he can fill the role as first choice.

Yeah I've not seen anything concrete to say we were ever interested. Wouldn't mind if Seriki ends up first choice - really need another option there though.

And that's the point Mayo, we all want Seriki to succeed but even if he does he will get suspensions/injuries etc and there is absolutely no back up.

Last season we had Gilchrist, Clarke and Choudhury as well as Seriki to cover tje position, now we have one player!!

We can't rely on Seriki for 46 games plus.

Last season we had 3 other RBs on loan who filled in.
