Championship player of the season - but we will find ways of pulling him apart

It's not really "pulling him apart," more a commentary on why he hasn't had (and doesn't look destined to have) a career at PL level.

He's fantastic to watch, but it's fair to say he lacks the physical attributes to transition to elite level football.

As for the PoTY award, pretty nuts it didn't go to someone from Leeds or Burnley given their points haul.
There were much better than Hamer in the league last season.

I think labelling his physical attributes as lacking is being unfair to be honest - it’s arguably one of his strongest attributes. We ended up putting ourselves in a situation where our most creative player was expected to do all the leg work of a winger, in a side that played a physically demanding style of football. He was still our best player and one that IMO can comfortably transition to premier league football.

Every player in the side was fucked after 70 minutes in almost every game last season. That’s either down to overall fitness levels at the club, none of our players being particularly athletic or our playing style tiring ourselves out. Personally, I’m leaning towards the latter.

This is my point though. Last season we played a style where we chased shadows for long periods, didn’t look after the ball particularly well and expected every player to put in more yardage than was needed.

To get the absolute best out of your creative players, you want them doing creative things - not chasing the ball about. Tired players make mistakes and don’t perform. Despite his personal habits, he was still comfortably our best player and at least on par with the rest of the squad in terms of fitness levels / stamina. For me, that’s quite the indicator that saying his physicality is lacking, is somewhat unfair.

The joke was naivety in not tying him to a longer contract sooner. This was perhaps impacted when we had an embargo placed on us in January of the promotion season.

We got the best price we could given the contract situation and what division we were in.

Technical ability he’s a PL player - I’d question whether his physique, fitness & tendency to give possession away are the reasons no PL side have had serious interest in him.

I disagree that he gives the ball away. Hamer tries passes to play people in but they went astray as no one was making the runs to get on the end of them because we were a static team under Wilder.

Stand still in space, receive the ball, wait for someone to run into space and for them to stand still then pass to them. Subbuteo football. If there is no one then turn and pass backwards and wait for the crowd to clap because we've kept possession.

Campbell's goal last night was the epitome of what we rarely did under Wilder. O'Hare drove with the ball with runners either side of him. The result was that he drew a defender towards him creating space for Cannon and Campbell. Easy goal. This is where Hamer will thrive in a central role as he tried doing this last season but never had runners alongside him or someone making a run ahead of him to pass to. His "poor passing" was more poor off ball movement from team mates. You could see what he was trying to do.

Burger from Stoke and Devine from Spurs early in the window are the midfield links so far. Burger would definitely be a CM and add height and physicality Devine is more an attacking mid and I wonder if he does come in if we might see him more as one of the wide forwards than a CM.

Linked with a lad in Hungary who plays CM. Think it was looking nailed on a few weeks ago but gone quiet.

It seems to me that between them, they are too lightweight. And even if Bindon isn't lightweight, he's young, and surely no sort of leader at upper championship level

We still need to bring in a strong, dominant CB. No idea what the plan is though

I'm happy for Souza to be sold and replaced by a more progressive footballer but if he's not there we can't afford a soft centre at CB

I’m pretty sure that Sellés talked about needing an RCB in his post-match interview. Ahmedhodžić is more than capable of playing on the left of a two, didn’t he do that when paired with Souttar?

Similar argument when people criticise Coopers distribution. It’s incredibly difficult to pick a pass to a forward who is stationary playing against a completely static defence. Every pass becomes a 50/50 with a winger vs a CB.

One player who covers RB/CB. Can still be supplemented with any from the pool of Shackleton, Baptiste, Sasnauskas, Sachdev and the new Bulgarian RB if we end up in extreme circumstances. Dunne would have been so ideal! So we reconsider Gilchrist or Choudhury?

Likewise we still have Caceres and Ikaki to make up the AM and RW numbers, possibly Marsh, however someone like Antman, who can do both would be good.

Centre Mid - imposing defensive type. (I believe Arblaster can become more box to box like a Declan Rice type)
Right Back - that Korean lad would be perfect based on 27 seconds of YouTube

*Choudhury - come to think of it - would flourish in a high tempo pressing team
