Whatever your opinion of Wilder is, he put together a squad that collected 92 points over a full season. To leave that behind, I can only assume that the board expect better - get this next appointment wrong and we’re in serious trouble.

I know the ‘92 points’ thing has been mentioned a few times now, but it’s important to remember.

The unbelievably dominant Wolves team in 2016 (full of Portuguese internationals) managed 7 more points than our tally last season.

The Fulham side from 2021 where Mitrovic scored a hat-trick every week secured 90 points.

Newcastle battered absolutely everyone in 2016. 94 points.

We were right there as a promotion candidate but ended up in a freak league where 2 other sides scored points totals which would see them both promoted in just about every single season for the last 20 years. This is a big call from the board and will be a serious test of where we are going as a club. I really hope it doesn’t come back to bite us on the arse.

I was well behind Wilder staying but at the same token I'd come to turns with him going because it just became obvious he was leaving. To hear it's not going to be O'Neil almost made me feel happy because I really don't want him! Hoping there's a decent name not already mentioned.

Very poor decision imo just hope we don't regret it

We had a third shot at getting promotion and managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

I love the bloke but I’m fairly ambivalent about him leaving, maybe sums it up. No idea who my choice to replace him would be. On the board to get the right man now, who will surely have to be judged on whether or not he gets us promoted.

The elation of Wilder going has been tarnished by the thought of either O' Neil or Selles.
Surely, there must be a tactically astute European manager that would be enticed by what United as a club offer?

You have to ask. What do our owners see in selles that hull city didn't?

And is this really wise Vs keeping wilder.

I can only assume they want less involvement from head coaches on transfers.

That's fine. But we will need a DOF too.

Bit sick of this 92 points thing all the time. 2 other teams managed to collect more points playing the same teams we did! We only managed one win out of SIX playing the Burnley,Leeds and Sunderland.

92 points or not we was the worst of the top 4 losing the penultimate game to a team that collected the least points of the top 4.

This is what ai reports about Selles style of play:

I guess certain people get what they wanted, exciting football, just don't complain when defensively we are worse.

If Selles is the man it's down to his history working with data. The owners have been pretty clear about the fact that they want to use data to identify players so it makes sense that they would look for a coach will embrace that.

Why though? The 92 points is relevant when talking about the job Wilder did. 9 out of the last 10 years it would have got us automatic promotion. Imo there is not one manager who would have got us 92 points with a rebuild and those players. Was an amazing job to get that many points.

Granted we could have got more and Wilder could have been blamed for costing us more with certain decisions I accept that, but let’s be honest here there is not one manager in the world that doesn’t make mistakes, not one. I think all in all he did an amazing job to get that many points but yes ultimately it ended in failure.

Can’t wait for this season though if we get a man who sits us firmly in mid table with attractive possession based football which is all about the stats and less about the points as we clap along for the attractive football while dreaming of ever getting 92 points again.

Leeds did it with a re-build and Burnley did it with many of the same players that got battered everyweek that we did and Sunderland did it without parachute payments so I'm not sure it would have been impossible for a different manager to get more points.

IMO I'd rather see attractive football and not go up rather than boring clinging onto a 1 goal lead and still not go up.

A successful history, or just a history?
Working with data is one thing, cultivating a promotion challenging team is another.
