He worked with a Sporting Director at Watford.
For 10 games at the end of a season. He was supposed to be working with one at Middlesbro for 45 games (Keiron Scott). He ended up being sacked by him (rather than chairman Steve Gibson). Wouldn't cooperate, wanted his own say on transfers and refused to play 2 international strikers they signed for him (Markus Forss and Matthew Hoppe). Our owners are trying to implement the same system.

No. Absolutely not. That needs a specialist team, with deep data and plenty of eyes on experience. But as the person who shapes the style, value, tone, is the media face of the club, shapes the footballing strategic overview for the club. I dunno, just a thought.
He strikes me as someone that wouldn't have a clue around setting a strategy and would interfere with a coach on a daily basis!

What's the source for this? Anyone actually read anything?

I'm not opposed to us having a DoF/Head Coach system, but there's nothing referenced in the original post

He did play Forss, until he lost his place to Rodrigo Muniz. This "he wouldn't play players bought by the DoF" stuff is total bollocks.

Wilder had Forss for 12 games and Forss played some part in 9 of them. When he wasn't playing, players like Akpom, Muniz or Watmore were. All of these players were presumably signed by the same DoF and two of them were signed before Wilder was even there.

So, again, the idea that Wilder would only play "his" players isn't really true.

Sorry Roygbiv but I know nowt about a Brian Tinnion so I did my own view from Bristol City fans on chatGBT…

Bristol City fans’ frustration with Brian Tinnion as technical director (sometimes described as DoF) centers mainly around recruitment, strategy, and decision-making. Here’s a breakdown of why many supporters have become increasingly critical:

In Summary
Fans’ criticisms of Brian Tinnion boil down to:
  1. Poor recruitment track record, with heavy spending on players who didn’t deliver.
  2. Lack of transparency and accountability for signings that haven’t worked.
  3. Frustration with the overarching “sell-to-reinvest” philosophy, seen as cautious and lacking ambition.
  4. Discontent with the wider boardroom structure, calling for a reset to progress.

And no experience in Bulgaria

On working with a Director of Football:

"I work within a group and a structure. Ultimately, I have to be comfortable with players I am working with. Every manager will say that. But I am flexible, too. As long as we have a shared plan and strategy I am totally fine with it."

On demanding full rein:

“I know there is a lot of talk about me wanting to absolutely run everything. Well, that is absolute nonsense. I just want to work with good people who have the same vision and ideas and that’s how I see a football club running."
In other words, as long as they agree with me they're fine and I'll work with them?

Edit: Apologies, I see that I'm late to the party with this view

They don't like him at all. O'Neil unlikely to get good reviews either. Presume Sellas will be really good though so get him in and put your AI in the bin

might just be how my "old brain " is working but I'm half expecting a couple of real left field appointments for coach and DOF !!
I've got no suggestions other than a couple of coaches ive previously mentioned who wouldn't take us on .

This is always the issue with DoF.

He buys the wrong players and the Manager is the one who gets the sack for not getting the results.

The success of a director of football really does lie with their relationship with the manager.

For example we recruited a DOF and they recognised that we played a formation favouring wingers last season but didn't have them. Let's say that they then sign for arguments sake, Kwame Poku and a quality left winger. Wilder then starts next season with Hamer on the left wing and O'Hare on the right. By the end of the season both wingers were barely played as a result but would be deemed as flops due to the manager not playing them. Arguably they weren't flops at all. They were good players but the manager refused to play them.

A good manager would change his system to suit the players available to him to find balance and get the most out of them. Poor management is changing players to force them into a system which he doesn't have the players for.

Chris, we’re looking at signing a nineteen year old Taiwanese box to box midfielder, do you want to see the videos.

Nah, can he do a gallon and what’s he like in a scrap?

I know you said box to box midfielder, but can he also play on the left wing and at right back?

So many people here have Chris Wilder blinkers on. All season, it's been square pegs in round holes, playing his favorites, i.e., Robinson, no matter what. He's not going to change, unfortunately. I would like nothing more than for the fearless CW from 2016 to reappear, but let's face it, he's not coming back.
