He's not made any mistakes but I'd love to know how many of his kicks has gone straight to stockdale. Every bloody time he does the same thing, completely pointless

yeh his kicking was varied, either out of touch for a throw or straight to the opp keeper. I don't think he's the answer but i'm glad George isn't guaranteed a game, competition is healthy.

Not really moaning, just thought he'd learn after doing it 10 times

Didn't have much to do tonight, but what he did have to do he did with minimal fuss. Very solid. Agree though his kicking is very poor (having said that though this seems to be a recurring theme for our goalkeepers recently and may be down to coaching rather than the player).

Would probably keep him on for Saturday, nice to have a bit of competition for George.

it was pretty windy there tonight and the cottage is right on the banks of the thames. he looked very assured and no nerves on his first game back.

He did very well. Far more confident and assured than Long at the moment.

Oh, and Long's kicking is far, far worse. But he's only young and he's called George, so that's O.K.

Shut up, we've just beaten premier league opposition and he's had a clean sheet

Howard was good today, to be fair to him Long cant kick either and he's just got a clean sheet against premier league opposition. Much to the players infront of him but still, he did what he had to do well.

I said exactly the same thing to the boy. Useless waste of possession. Although, he did look assured, less likely to make a mistake I would say.

Howard hoofed the ball to nowhere a lot and you are praising him!! Thought you hate hoof? Fulham's style tonight was like us under Weir and the way you wanted us to play!

He didnt have much to do

I'm praising his goalkeeping, which was flawless, and pointing out that his kicking is better than Long's. Then again, so is that of a one-legged man in an arse kicking contest.

George's confidence is shot, as is that of the defenders in him. He needs a rest.

I don't particularly want us to play like Fulham, but I would like to be in the Premier League again and one things for sure - Hoof won't get us there. Arsenal are the model to follow.

I am probably one of Long's biggest fans, however he takes all the grief and needs a break. If competition for places is good I hope Nigel extends that to the rest of the team from now on.

Howard didnt have much to do cos Fulham were too w*nk to score. But at the same time I do not think he deserves to be dropped for this Saturday

Agreed, he deserves a run in the team and a rest for George will do no harm, competition is good.

Apart from the kicking as mentioned i thought his positioning looked good and you could forgive him a little for looking a bit rusty but he didn't. Job well done

Howard looks a decent back up. To come into this game after so much time as Long's understudy it gives confidence that we have a proper back up.

His kicking was woeful though. But I thought the defence/ midfield could've offered other options than the punt up field. It gave possession away too much and against a better side we might've struggled

Well done Howard - great to see

Got to say that at this moment in time would prefer Howard to be between the sticks on Saturday, though he wasn't really tested tonight though.

I would agree that to come back after being on the bench for so long and put in a calm, assured performance is great to see. Not much to do but did it well

I like Howard, always have done, calm, unfussy, good position, can kick long ;). Seriously though, he kicked either for touch or to Stockdale that often, I wonder if there was a purpose behind it?
Currently an improvement on Long.

I'm assuming you mean handling rather than goalkeeping (of which handling is certainly a key component). It was quite clear in parts that, like Long, he wasn't very commanding of the area - at least two instances that nearing led to chances came about from him not giving Collins a shout to leave it. Luckily with Fulham smashing everything wayward it wasn't an issue.

His kicking though was beyond terrible. I don't think it's unfair to say that this added about 10 minutes of expended energy for the players, simply because in virtually every instance it handed possession back to Fulham. This was particularly bad in the 2nd half when we started to tire.

Other than that though, flawless. I'd probably keep him in for Saturday though. To suggest the immaculate performance of the back 4 was down to him, when the same group were similarly excellent in the first game, wouldn't quite be right.

Howard had virtually nothing to do in terms of shot stopping, except for one routine block from a Duff shot. To say that his performance was "flawless" is completely wrong as a goalkeeper's performance is based on handling, communication, reflexes and distribution.

There were two moments when Howard's communication let him down - one was Fulham's only(?) corner when he went for a punch 8 yards out; the other was when Collins had to clear a bouncing ball.

Shot stopping: 8 - pushed one shot wide which he didn't need to
Communication 6 - as above
Reflexes: n/a - no reflex saves made
Distribution: 2 - it was truly woeful. Yes, it was windy but surely he could have compensated for that. It's almost as if he was priding himself on getting a kick straight through to Stockdale. In addition, I could see from the stand that aiming balls at Porter wasn't going to work, given that he was up against two giants who won everything in the air.

It was a strange decision from Clough to play Howard. I'd probably play him on Saturday but whenever he's in the side I feel that we're vulnerable.

Has everyone really forgotten just how appalling George Long's kicking is? I would say the worst I have ever seen from a professional goalkeeper.

Long's kicking isn't great but it is generally better than Howard's was last night. Did you watch the game last night? Both Stockdale's and Howard's distribution was awful - for different reasons too; Howard kicked either too long and straight or directly out for a throw around half way. Stockdale kept miskicking under pressure.

I agree, but not once did he make me think a bomb was about to go off. I can't say that for George in recent times.

But when he played against Burton a small bomb went off and when he played against Rotherham an atomic one went off. That's a lot of bombs from 5 games.

He had so little to do last night that it feels a bit like praising Terry Kennedy for not making any mistakes.

His kicking out of his hands was the worst I think I've ever seen.

It will be really interesting to see who Clough starts on Saturday. I think that Long is ready for a rest but I don't see Howard as a suitable replacement.
