Game On - The Chase for the Title

We've lost every game we've played against Leeds and Burnley and have a significantly poorer goal difference because we can't win a game by more than one goal.
We are the third best team and definitely the outsiders. A lot of tough games coming up, starting tomorrow, and unless one of the others collapses we aren't going to finish in the top two.

And yet we have accumulated more points than either of them.

They might be better than us in one off games, but by the measure that matters, we have more points after 36 games.

We may finish third or even fourth in the end, but to declare that right now, given what has happened so far in this season is very premature

Goal difference as well as them beating us suggests both are clearly better teams.
Only conceding 10 goals and the other scoring 72 is a pretty clear indication, as well as the evidence of our own eyes in numerous performances this season.
Wilder's done a good job with what he has at his disposal (bar what looks an awful signing in Cannon) but we aren't as good as the other two.

Looking at it another way - in the games where we have played common fixtures (i.e. we have played Sunderland at home and so have Leeds and Burnley so we can compare that game, but we have played QPR away but neither Leeds or Burnley have so we exclude it from our analysis)

We have picked up 3 fewer points than Leeds at home, but 10 more than Leeds away (so net 7 points "better" than Leeds). And 6 more than Burnley at Home and One more than Burnley away (so again a net of 7 points).

This demonstrates that we are very good at beating team outside the top 3.

FWIW if you do the same comparison for Leeds v Burnley, then Leeds have picked up 6 more points that Burnley at Home, but 7 fewer away from home.

Of the games this midweek only Burnley's home game against WBA can change these numbers (as neither Burnley or leeds have played Bristol C at home, and neither Burnley or us have played Millwall at home) -both us and Leeds picked up a single point at home to WBA.

Nobody is expecting them back.

They are significant though.

The media fawning over Leeds as the best team in the league when on the field United have been better I.e. minus outside interference we’ve accumulated two more points. We’re the better team over 36 matches.

It’s only that technicality that brings us level.

So yes, we have to live with it, but it is annoying the media have been quick to forget the * that should be alongside our name. Without it, we’ve probably been rightfully top for some weeks.

Chris has a chance to overcome this now. There’s no manager better at keeping the hammer down.
“Getting em back” was just a figure speech.

Third best with the most points won…

This is the truth.

Can we do it?
Points wise and form wise yes. As much as I would happily take 2nd place if the season ended right now, I would love to see us pip Leeds/Burnley to 1st place.

Will we do it?
50/50 on whether we will win the league or not as that game against Burnley could be a huge game in the auto and title race, which could also be Leeds best chance to get ahead of both us and Burnley in the title race.

Surely the fact that we are 2nd after a points deduction, having won more games than any other team in the league strongly suggests we are not 3rd best.

Not sure if mentioned but our away record is really quite phenomenal.

A 66.7% win ratio, 12 wins from 18 with 3 draws and 3 defeats means we are tracking to match or achieve the best away wins in the Championship.

The record is 14 by Leicester in 13/14 season. 2 from 5 and we match that. Obviously one more and we have the record.

Given the circumstances I do like the way we have quietly gone about our business. We have few cheerleaders pushing out case; only this week Micah Richards was saying how he hoped Leeds and Burnley came up (as he knew the players).

Talk has been that Burnley could be top after midweek before Leeds play.

Only a small footnote on the * -2 points from Adam Oxley on the BBC website.

Long me way be allowed to quietly go about our business with the -2 removing all the press that we would have been top for a few weeks in the season.

Hopefully we can be the runner that comes up and finishes first past the post.

The media will think we came form nowhere when we’ve had a high ppg all season.

Let’s get the away record and the overall total wins record and get over the line. One game at a time.

why are people always slagging Chris Wilder off on here. I don't get it who cares how we perform as long as we win? People have a right to have an opinion of course, but come on give Chris Wilder the credit he deserves. we have a great chance of going up. It will be even better if we can win the championship
Cos on here's as close as we can get😜

Why slag Wilder off? we top of the league going for promotion could win the league. He is one of the best managers we have ever had.I do not get it. if certain so-called Bladefans do not like him. I suggest you don't come to Bramall Lane and go elsewhere instead.

Having watched tonight we're probably not the third best team in the league. Somewhere below that.
Some folk have got way too giddy despite the evidence of their own eyes this season.
Wilder's done pretty well with a largely thrown together team and if Souttar hadn't got injured we may have been unstoppable.
But we are often reliant on individual bits of ability rather than anything close to a clear, progressive pattern of play - which Bristol City showed tonight.
Take Hamer out of that team next season in the Championship and it's hard to see how we create anything much at all.

Leeds result at Pompey and ours & Burnley’s tonight should remind us all that there will be lots of twists & turns & points dropped over the next 9 games. No way any of us are going to win all 9. Still think 95 pts would be enough - so that would be 6 wins - although I’d underline that by saying we need to avoid defeat at Burnley.

Beating Burnley will be the decider.

Unfortunately.
If you come to Turf Moor and try to win, you will lose. Burnley are good both at scoring against defences of less than 8 men, and at holding the lead once they have got it.

On the other hand, if you come and put 8 men behind the ball and try for a breakaway, Burnley won't score and you might even sneak a win. And there is no need to worry about the late onslaught as Burnley push for the winner, because we don't do that. If we haven't looked like scoring or conceding for an hour or more, Parker won't change anything - he will be happy with the point.

I’d just be happy with having 10 men on the pitch at the end of the game for a change.

We can't defend ....

We can't defend ....
We have the best away record in the division. Whatever we’re doing works.

Our away record is actually better than Burnley’s home record, albeit by a gnats cock!

We’ve taken 37 points from 18 matches at 2.06PPG, Burnley has 39 from 19 at 2.05PPG. Kind of suggests an even match with the way both play.

Frustrating not to pull away when Burnley dropped points. Bristol City have to visit Turf Moor and Burnley also have to go to Coventry, so they have some tough games coming up.

Egan-Riley's red card will be downgraded to Yellow, i'm sure
