And Division Three looked up just in time to see the red white and black of Sheffield United hurtling towards them in freefall.

I couldnt have put it better. We had better players at the time and definitely had better central midfielders

And that is the alarming thing about our current predicament.

I think that th1980-1 side was significantly better than the current side. We went down because that side lacked mental toughness. We had the wrong types of player for a relegation fight. Particularly a relegation fight we were never in until the eleventh hour. However, the side did have ability and was under performing hugely.

This side is just poor in virtually every aspect of the game and does not have the ability of the1980-1 side.

That was a few years ago. We're in Division Three now, but don't worry, it won't be for long.

i don't understand how the same team can get results against premiership outfits and then come out with this.. there is something definitely wrong at the club
It's the players. They think they just have to turn up against teams like Crewe but have to perform against higher teams. Trouble is the lower teams all perform against us.

This was our usual team in 1981

Richardson (25 league games)/Conroy (21)
Ryan (37)
Garner (33)
Kenworthy (37)
MacPhail (39)
Houston (32)
Tibbott (26)
Trusson (38)
Charles (25)- Martin Peters gave him the number 9 shirt in 13 out of the 16 games he was in charge
Hatton (44)
Peters (23)

George Long is a far better keeper than Richardson and better than Conroy was. Ryan, Garner, Kenworthy, McPhail, Houston, Trusson and Hatton were good players. Peters was an useful player for us but he didnt pick himself into the team after he was appointed as our new manager which was one of his many mistakes. Charles was very young at the time and had a good attitude, played in many positions but it was a difficult season for him as he wasnt really a centre forward Peters thought he might be!. Tibbott was not a player I rated although I didnt realise at that time he was suffering from injury problems and retired from playing in the following season. We won 14 games that season and this season we have won only 6 so can we win more than 8 out of remaining 19 games? Only 4 times in the 1980-81 season we lost by more one goal (2-0 at Charlton and Oxford, 4-0 at Newport and 5-2 at Swindon). This season so far we have lost by more than one goal on six occasions

The outfield players were all decent ,it shows the need for a good keeper behind them. Same goes for this season ,I know a lot don't like it but I think he is woeful and regressing. Hes not the only problem but we should have an experienced keeper in goal and he should be learning under less pressure elsewhere.

Seen the goals on Sky last night, none of the goals were Long's fault. Why do you keep criticising a promising keeper coming through the ranks and not criticise small, slow and limited journeymen like Doyle? Might as well scrap the Academy and sign over 30 year old players!

I will criticise anyone if the deserve it and Doyle has ,but Long is out of his depth ,his lack of communication with his defence is the main problem not his shotsaving ,the back 4 are all over the place and have no confidence in him and from this stems the fragility of the team. Its not something Ive just picked up on ,it started at home to Crewe last season when he had a nightmare and let them back in the game ,I don't think he has recovered his stature since then ,and don't think he will until he has a spell at another club where he can be taught how to boss his back 4. Im not having a go at him as a person ,he has been mismanaged ,by the 2 previous managers and I think Clough should now make the change.

Long is promising, but nothing more. He's not good enough right now. Yesterday wasn't his fault, but that doesn't alter the point. One of the few I'd keep because of potential, but not nearly good enough here and now.

You can get away with mediocrity (wankness in our case) in many positions, but not in attack (No 1 priority) or goal (No2).

Having seen Howard twice this season (Burton and Millers game where he made mistakes), I would lose confidence if he is called up!

You've still got some confidence in anything? That's one of us then? :)

:) BTW I have been told that our u16s got thrashed 5-1 by Wendy yesterday. Maybe our current u18s will be the last crop of good players? Have we sort of given up on finding good talent for u9s to u16s or maybe Simon Clough will sort this out for next season?

I'm currently wiping the oeuf from my face and I'm just about to cut myself a nice big fat slice of humble pie.

Yum yum.

Nuddy, the way things looked, I think most of us had concerns. It's a forum mate, so quite a few on here predicted on how things appeared to be at the time. Things were really crap, now they're a little less crap, sorry, let me rephrase that....things are a lot less crap, and it feels so much less stressful. So well done Cloughie for bringing about a change in fortunes, UTB

After that Crewe defeat I think everyone was a bit angry. It looked like there was no hope at all.

What a difference a month makes.

Ain't that the truth brother...we've been fucked over so many times in the past, that I believe there's a streak of fatalism about many of us, and who can blame anyone for assuming that just around the corner is another slice of bad luck - whatever that is?

Does anyone think we won't lose another game this season? Then what? Doom and despair? We've got some pride back, we're beginning to see the makings a decent team for a change, all down to the judgement of our manager of course, and who knows what this team will look like come next season? So I think we've got a lot to look forward to.....that is unless there's more bollocks waiting around the corner? But hey, there I go buying into that old Blades fatalism.....nah, we're suddenly showing resolve, fighting spirit, added to which we're enjoying what Nigel has brought to this club we love UTB

Are we allowed to aim for the play offs yet?

If we beat MK surely we can?
I like your enthusiasm, but talking of the playoffs will raise hope, and we know what happens when hope returns.. It gets dashed. It's the Blades way. Settle for mid table, talk of the great escape Part II, and then anything else is a bonus.

You can talk about playoffs when we have one game left, we're one point away from 6th place, playing the current 6th place team, having just signed Messi and Ronaldo on a 24 hour, 1 game only emergency loan

I'm going to take a large slice of credit for the recent upturn. My intemperate tirade of abuse in my Cup Tarts rant must have been printed out in huge point size and pinned to the dressing room wall.

Following the Forest win and the upturn in league form my complete retraction, Heroes post will have been placed right next to the previous.

Pay homage and tribute to the Ken
:D

Yeah but then we'd only have the disappointment of another Wembley loss to look forward too;)

72 points would have got you in the play offs last season. This season, it looks like more may be needed, but if we stick at 72, that means we need another 34 points from 15 games = W10 D4 L1.

Not impossible, but highly improbable.
