If we don't go up will we be stronger or weaker next season?

  • Stronger: Wilder will improve defence, sign a top striker and keep our key players

  • Weaker: Wilder will buy/loan more players who are sideways move at best + we'll lose key players

  • No change: We'll be far better than most but not title winners.

Should we not succeed in getting promoted this season, do you think we will strengthen or weaken from the squad we have now?

How likely are we to be able to hold on to star players like Hamer, Souza, Cooper and Anel? Will we be able to make Diaz or Rak-Saki permanent moves?
Would Wilder recruit better in Summer than he did in January?

I'd like to say yes to all 3 but it's hard to be confident.

If we don't go up, we are probably nailed on to lose Hamer and Souza. I think they both love it here, but will be tempted away, and clubs will be willing to pay substantial fees for both.

Therefore whether we can re invest that and make the team stronger is debatable, but with the new owners I am more confident that most of the cash would be reinvested.
and with a couple of half decent replacements we will be in the mix for promotion again.

Souza, Hamer, Cooper and Anel would all more than likely get offers from teams above us.

Plus next season our parachute payment drops down to £30 mill from £45 mill I think. And you can expect Birmingham & Wrexham who will likely be promoted to throw money at it along with likely Leicester, Southampton & Ipswich who come down.

This may be our best chance for a while.

I can only imagine we'd be weaker next season.

Hamer will go. Souza ill probably go. Anel will go.

We'll have to replace JRS, Choudhury, Gilchrist, Holding, BBD, Clarke.

Robbo, Brewster, RND contracts expire. Assume Robbo will get renewed for another year.

That's a lot of players to replace and we're limited under FFP. I presume we've spend a lot on fees this season. Difficult to bring in same calibre of players again.

We'd have

---------------------Cooper
-----Seriki----------?-------------Robbo--------Burrows
-------------------Peck-----------Arblaster
----------O'Hare------------------------------Brooks
----------------------Moore----Cannon

Subs: T Davies, new GK, McCullum, Campbell, Baptiste, One, Shackleton

We would have Moore, Campbell, Cannon and One on the books so unlikely to be able to sign another unless One goes out on loan.

Maybe one CB. One injury prone RB. Several injury prone players in the squad. I suspect a couple will want to leave for first team football.

Another huge building job, which I presume will be party funded by sales. We'll have money but difficult to bring players in and get them to gel.

If we don't go up we'll lose Hamer (£15m to Leeds), Souza, Ahmedhodzic and Cooper. We'd also have no chance of signing Brereton Díaz or Rak-Sakyi permanently so we'd lose half of our starting XI. We've got another big rebuild ahead of us this summer and I'd much rather we were doing that in the top flight.

I suspect Anel will be off as well.

There may be a few in addition to the two I mentioned. Agree on Anel, perhaps Cooper (though I have a feeling he might stay) and if Arblaster hadn't picked up that injury we would have been battling offers for him too. I also would not be at all surprised if Peck is gaining a lot of admirers. His progression has been phenomenal this season.

If we don’t go up we’ll have to balance the books & that’ll mean departures .
Certainly see the likes of Cooper , Hamer , Souza & possibly Anel attracting attention of some PL clubs & maybe a fit Arblaster too .
A much as the Championship is a more even league , the longer your in it the weaker you become as you are constantly treading water to make ends meet .

Will be another rebuild! Hamer,Souza,Anel maybe Cooper will all go for a decent fee and I can't see the loan players wanting to do another year.

Wouldn't be surprised if we were tested on Cooper and maybe Burrows. O'Hare maybe as well.

Most of our best transfers have been the cheapest. You'd also hope that next season won't be another freak "4 teams hitting 85+ points" season.

Im not sure any of the usual suspects will be on hit list of established Prem teams. Maybe one of the promoted might want some squad fillers, but no-one is chucking big bucks at Yellow Card Gus.

Can only see moves to Holland or the like.

Birmingham yes - Wrexham aren`t going to have the sort of funds needed to compete at the top end of the Championship unless they find some new investors

If the board has money there shouldn't be any need to panic. It's highly unlikely we are close to breaching FFP due to the volume of sales (including pure profit academy sales) and the relative lack of expenditure over the last three seasons - including demolishing our wage bill. The only loan that looks irreplaceable to me is BBD. The others are good, but not that good (Souttar aside). Our hit rate on permanents in the summer was almost perfect. They'd all get suitors that would better the fees we paid.
Arblaster and T Davies can also hopefully play more of a part next season.

That's not to say other clubs won't be interested in our players. They will. Get your cheque books out and add 5-10 million on any realistic fee lads 😉. The one to worry about is Anel: he's in the last year of his contract next season iirc. I hope there's an announcement of a new contract there.

In terms of Hamer, Souza and Anel I wouldn't definitely bank on there being interest in them from other English clubs. If they are to leave I'd say it would be more likely to be overseas somewhere.

I can't see them going to other Championship clubs because the rest of the league won't be able to afford them (the three coming down obviously will be able to but I don't think they'd be interested, Leicester, Saints and Ipswich would probably set their sights a little higher to be honest), and I also can't see many bottom half PL clubs coming in for them either.

I only have this opinion because I'm looking at it this way - that if we don't go up then it means these players will have failed to get promotion plus weren't even standouts in our last PL campaign (granted they were surrounded by a lot of shit). Upon our relegation no PL clubs came in for any of them so why would they now after not being good enough to even get out of the division below? Anel does have the previous Championship promotion with us under Hecky two years ago I'll admit but it still doesn't look great overall does it?

As for Hamer potentially to Leeds - it seems undoubtedly they'll be a PL club next season so again I think it's another 'they'll set their sights higher' because they'll be on a serious quest to try and stay up which is nigh on impossible these days. It was understandable they were interested/bid for him in the most recent summer window, but that was as a Championship club hoping to get promotion, which it looks like they're going to manage anyway without him.

It's a great point you make. If the names above do leave, and we drive a Saudi-esque hard bargain, we're looking at c£100m coming in. So long as someone stops Wilder spunking that on shit strikers, we'll be fine...

Considering we will be taking a chunk less in parachute payments along with players having a year less on contracts there would be another big but probably not as drastic change in the summer.

That said I am still confident we come 2nd and don't really want to think of this situation that much thank you!

Hamer will go and possibly Anel and Souza.

We’ll get some good proper Brits in though to replace them.

And even if the sale of those players were to generate multi millions (perhaps in the region of £50m) there is no way we don’t go in to next season weaker.

The 4 you mention are all PL players. The only ones we have IMHO.

Harsh on a few of our younger lads who may get to that level, and sooner rather than later for some of em, but not seasoned pros at this point.

Hamer , Souza, Cooper will not be playing Championship football next season.

Anel will leave as he’s out if contract.

West Ham are rumoured to be admirers of Peck

Another big rebuild next season if we don’t go up

No he isn't
He'll be in the last year of his contract though. If he's not willing to sign an extension then we'll be forced to sell rather than see him go for nothing 12 months later. But honestly I don't think he is Prem class and I don't see him being successful at a bigger club than ourselves. he's a very good Championship player though so whilever we're at this level he's a great asset.
