If it is a witch hunt, it's roots go back some way.
Like yourself, I judge a player on his week by week performance. Forgive my memory, but since Doyle was appointed captain of United he's been at best ok to ordinary in the level of performance he's turned in. For this sort of average to happen of course there have been a few games where he's risen above his own ordinary standards. Most importantly, he's captained this side on a downward curve, so no signs of an upswing in United's fortunes with Doyle at the helm, just a steady decline and each home game thousands of fans paying out their hard earned cash to see watch this decline. Don't misunderstand, I'm not blaming Doyle for this single-handedly, but we're not stupid as fans, and I can't see the influence this man is meant to impart that is supposed to lift this side more regularly than it has done.
What was witnessed today was a man, who's meant to act more responsibly than anyone else, act like a thug and, due to his dismissal, weaken the side through his actions. Again, don't get me wrong, having someone who bites in a side can be no bad thing, but Doyle didn't bite, he behaved as if the red mist had descended, and in front of the cameras and thousands of people who couldn't excuse his behaviour. Doyle's not smart enough to know when and where to retaliate, so we all saw a man whose actions deprived us at a time when we most needed him.
One thing I do agree with you, to point a finger at Clough would be the height of foolishness. Whatever punishment Clough hands down to Doyle it will be done with consideration and without a knee-jerk reaction. Isn't that what Clough is paid to do? UTB
