Doyle...

No he doesn't and has certainly performed consistently better than other players who have been in our squad this season..

That is a very poor endorsement. Over the course of the season who has played well? So Doyle has been mediocre in a team of shite and even that is debatable.

Fact is; Doyle has been a leader that has coincided with our worst spell in recent history. So during his time we have suffered relegation (ok he joined after damage was done), automatic promotion failure, play off failure and a perhaps a L1 relegation. I think some fans are under the illusion that he is leadership material just because he bollocks his teammates and throws in a crunching tackle now and again.

So you are saying it wasn't his fault we got relegated, and he led us to two play off campaigns, one of which we had a team where we should have been up before Evans got sent down and last season we managed to get to the play offs despite not keeping hold of our goal scoring midfield player(Williamson),selling Quinn and selling our leading goal scorer. Just trying to figure out what Doyle did wrong in all that ..

You comment about the 'illusion' of his leadership qualities, can you tell me what leadership qualities you expect him to have that he doesn't possess in your opinion ?

I am not saying he is the best player we have or that he inspires me with confidence but the over-reaction to his sending off is unbelievable in my eyes which has been highlighted in this thread..

How long have you got?

He lacks pretty much all the major attributes to be an effective leader, his tendencies include:

-Winding up other players. Perhaps if he saved this energy for encouraging his teammates, he'd improve.
-Bollocking his teammates for losing possession, but being the first to do it himself.
-Regular late/cynical/unprofessional challenges.
-Showing no respect to his own fans, it's been said after some away days he has ignored the fans when others have gone over to applaud their support despite a performance unworthy of it.

You can put me in the same obsessed, anti-Doyle group as sheffielder because I see what a damaging effect he has on the team. Granted he has improved recently under Clough but that's probably because previous Managers were more lenient to his attitude and NC has made an example of King, Brandy and McMahon who were/are players whose attitude was having an adverse effect. NC doesn't forgive indiscipline like Weir or Wilson did.

Would I have him as a squad player? Yes, I think he can offer something in this poor division. But i'd prefer him to be taking orders off someone like Matt Hill who, like Doyle, is limited as a player but exhibits a honest professional in his performances.

So basically a captains job is to wave to the fans ,think your getting mixed up with Captain Blade ffs.
If I was a player and Matt Hill was my captain I would be inspired to top myself.

That is a massive disservice to someone who is one of our more consistent performers. frankly you should be ashamed of yourself. matt hill is ten times the professional that Doyle is and not just because he waves to the fans. he always puts in 100 percent and is constantly encouraging other players.. actually i fell out with Doyle last season. he made a mistake and then proceeded to give Westlake a right bollocking which i thought was out of order and i lost respect for the guy. his only contribution was to force the removal of Montgomery for which i will be eternally grateful. unfortunately in many respects we have replaced like for like

But he simply consisitent ,he has made so many mistakes which have directly cost goals and points ,far more than any other player. He doesn't talk on the pitch just encourages and smiles a lot ,and wouldn't give bollockings if needed. His positional sense and awareness is diabolical ,and he has no distribution skills. At best he is a stand in centre half ,at worst he is probably the weakest captain material at Sheffield Utd.

Agreed that Hill has made cock ups, but unlike Doyle he doesn't point fingers and apportion blame afterwards to any teammates in shouting distance. Also, Hill has won many more tackles/headers/tussles then he has made glaring cock ups, but that get's conveniently overlooked. He was my MOM against Fulham 2nd half.

He won a few tackles and did quite well ,but he was terribly indisciplined positionally ,was caught quite a few time miles behind the back line which let Fulham come on much more. Some of that is due to Long not pushing him out ,but outlined the fact that he needs to be spoken constantly ,the complete opposite of what a captain needs to be. As for the finger pointing and nastiness ,Keane ,Adams ,Robson ..Morgan all decent captains all have that side to their nature.

The difference with Doyle and anyone of those players is that they could all back up their bollockings with an influential performance.

I agree but cant see a viable alternative ,Im sure we will get one in the summer but for now there is no one.
