Where do I start?
3 years ago steward at the turnstiles asks me 'what's in the bag', I stupidly say 'semtex', cue me being led off to see the head of security at Utd. I stopped arguing with him because he was quite old and I didn't want to induce his cardiac arrest. Speaking of arrest, he radioed the police at the corner of John Street and Bramall Lane to frisk me. Policeman read the situation as trivial and didn't bother.
Yep I was stoopid (I had lost £30 odd quid on the deal) but the very next time I went through the turnstiles between South Stand and Kop with the same bag over a year later, a different steward said to me, 'what have you got in the bag, a bomb?' sauce for the goose NOT sauce for the gander then.
I was at Wembley to see Man. City humiliate Stoke in the Cup final a couple of years ago they prolong the celebrations before the winners get the cup to try and filter the losing fans out of the way first. A teenage Stoke fan in the stand below me had a big flag, decided he'd like to see Manchester get the trophy and he started a conga. The stewards gave the lad a beating, not serious medically but far too strong, I filmed it and posted on a Stoke forum. It came to nought.
They hate congas, I saw them chuck out a kid at Lord's for starting one when rain stopped play!
Crystal Palace steward started frisking me in the queue with out introducing himself or asking my permission so, affronted, I frisked him back, he pinched my ticket and ripped it up (they don't like it up 'em) but again I was saved by the Cops who let me in through an exit gate.
Like bouncers, stewards are emboldened by having council approval, I think private police forces should not be tolerated in a democracy.
Some of them are licenced* thugs.
*added later after reading the post below, je m'excuse of course not all stewards are violent.
