Just listening to the transfer deadline day latest bulletin on Talksport radio.

Just said and I quote

‘Rob Holding looks likely to be joining Sheffield United today”.
‘We understand that the out of favour Crystal Palace defender is keen on the move”

Apparently he’s a Manchester lad (from Stalybridge which is this side of the Pennines) so should feel at home moving back up north.
Yeah Arsenal got him from Bolton. Typical Wenger signing at the time they needed a dominant starting CB so he went and bought a kid from Bolton and pitched him as the 2nd coming.

I do want x2 CBs. Shouldn't gamble on x1 in case of injuries - let alone any fitness/sharpness doubts.

18 months without a professional appearance.
Prior to that, at Arsenal, he got 560 league minutes in 22/23 season. Equivalent to a little-over 6 games.

In the last 2.5 seasons, 6 games of domestic league football and none in the last 18 months.
Dropping in, mid-season, to a promotion campaign which requires several 3-game-week turnarounds.

With our injury record, you'd think it would be a signing we'd swerve.

If he was on a free transfer, and this was June I'd perhaps see some sense in it. But this is our most important signing of the season and not one to take a punt on.

We should be spending the extra bit of cash on a ready-made CB that Wilder wants (and maybe saving the foreign AI punts for the Summer also...).

Lack of games isn't down to injuries though - he did his cruciate ligaments which kept him out in 2018/19, but since then, he's only missed 14 games through injury.

His lack of games at Arsenal were because he was at Arsenal. Always had elite players ahead of him so was never a first choice CB for them.

Palace is a bit of a write off though in fairness

A perfect example of being down the pecking order is Tanganga - he has played 50 games for Tottenham in 6years at the club. He's now played 46 games for Millwall in 53 weeks

Holding fell out with Glasner that's why he got frozen out.

FWIW I always sign him on Pro Evo 17. He's always brilliant.

So rest easy Blades. It'll all be fine.

Konami told me so.

Getting ptsd and flashbacks to when we needed a solid replacement for JOC and spunked all our money on a striker instead 😂

I think he would be fine
He's easily as good as mepham or rodon
Think mostt will be surprised how easily he will make the adjustment

Always thought he looked a premier league level. Player whenever I've seen him play
Valid point this one. He was better than Rodon when fit and in form. No doubt about it.

TBF, Holding is a good CB, especially for the championship, there might be a few question marks over fitness but CW and recruitment staff will have done their research.

It might not be as good a signing as Tanganga or Dunne, Tanganga could very well be 1 for summer as it doesn't look like he'll be leaving Milwall this window, but it's a good signing for the level.

Forgot about Holding potentially not being good enough in the premier league, we've got to get there first.

Is he an upgrade on Robinson and Gilchrist (CB)? yes

Is he the worst CB target this window? no, imo I think he's better than Harry Darling and Ryan Porteous, but Harry Darling has more potential.

Inb4 club forgets we can only have 5 loans in matchday squad and we get fined 🤣😭⚔️

Is this a done deal? Understand we are not in with a chance over Tanganga but SSN quoting Dunne increased offer.

Spend 10m on Cannon, then refuse to spend an extra 1m or so to get Dunne, and instead saddle ourselves with someone who won't be up to speed until late March. Great stuff, very joined up. Good job we score so many goals, eh...?

The EFL would probably bring out a new rule.
Tell us it’s an additional 1 point deduction and if we try to appeal they’ll change our punishment to a 6 point deduction.

Rob Holding is a typical Wilder signing, someone who 6 year ago had a big career ahead of him playing for the mighty Arsenal.
However in recent years his career has totally stalled…he’ll have decent money in his bank account but will now be so hungry to kick start his career.
He’s a bit of a gamble which might or might not pay off….I suppose my only issue is that due to his lack of matches he won’t be able to hit the ground running.

If he’s relatively cheap then it’s a clever calculated risk kind of signing but not the statement, here and now signing we’d hoped for.
However maybe we’re all being greedy and entitled, let’s not forget he’s played quite a lot of matches over several seasons representing a team at upper PL level.
This has similarities to the Michael Keane type of signing, he’s lost his way in the PL going no where but could easily be a big star at the lower Championship level.

This seems like an overly desperate move, even for us. No way we're losing 6 players and leaving one out of the match squad so presumably Gilchrist going (When we need 2 CBs ideally).

I agree it’s a good signing, I have no issue at all with that.

My concern is the 5 player loan limit that we’ll be exceeding. JRS, Clarke, Choudhury, BBD are all pretty certain to start most games & Gilchrist is better than RND who tends to be the CB cover.

We also need Gilchrist in the squad as RB cover as Seriki can’t put a run of games together. Another loan just seems a bit of a desperate way of getting that extra CB in.

Is it definitely a loan

6 loans then. Stating obvious but a permanent would be better. Guessing when Seriki fit Clarke might miss out. When he isn’t gilchrist misses out. Either way not great for morale.
