Felt traumatised after last night’s performance and result. On more sober reflection (and, ironically, after a few glasses of wine!) feeling much better today. With Leeds playing Burnley on Monday the biggest opportunity presented by our Friday night loss was to the Mackems. They blew it giving away a late equaliser to Plymouth. A draw on Monday and no real damage. A win for either team has pros and cons but we come out of this weekend with a kick up the arse rather than having suffered a fatal blow.

Credit to the team for having amassed a points total that gives us this position. A week of training together, new boys bedding in, significant returns of senior players and a the addition of a couple of good signings is just what we need. We reset and go again. Still great times to be a Blade! Now where’s that bottle of Malbec….

Complete overreaction for me. The team is depleted. A left back in midfield, a player signed that morning starting up front, another player who’s hardly had any game time all season starting wide left. All that added to a team which if you listed its top five players not long ago has four of them unavailable (Arblaster, Souza, Hamer and Souttar). All that said, we were an incorrect decision away from levelling that game. As it was we ended up chasing it which led to definitely the third goal and arguably the second too. I’d hope for a better performance against Derby and with the players we have due back it’d be slightly worrying if not, but to view that game purely as “lost 3-0 at home to Hull” and not take into account any of the context feels off to me.

How will the ball be progressed from back to front with 2 CMs who are both 'safe' passers and a LCB who's extremely suspect on the ball?

Does Cannon start even though he and Campbell make very similar runs in behind but Campbell is a much better all round footballer?

Can you fit Hamer, O'Hare, BBD, Cannon, JRS and Campbell into the same team?

I think you probably know the answers to your first and last two questions (pray for JJK or someone else, plus it’s a squad game x2) but I think your second question is the killer. Arblaster is missed a lot.

I agree performances have been bad. A loss at home to Hull with a very depleted team probably could’ve been expected too. But I don’t think it requires an overreaction. I don’t think we’re miles off agreeing tbh. If we lose against Derby and look no good then it will be some cause for concern.

Instead of being postive or negative…..how about being realistic?

Promotion seeking sides are those that are top of the league with the most points, makes no difference if you lose to a rival.
Last season Leeds did the double over Leicester, didn’t do Leeds any good winning these 6 pointers.

Apparently we keep having so many off days but without the 2 points deduction, we’d currently top the league.
We’ve also won more matches than any other team in the league, this is a fact. How can that be?

Can I remind you that when Leeds and Sunderland have off days they always seem to drop points, even against poor sides down near the bottom.
Burnley have a great defense but have consistently struggled to score at home, even against the rubbish teams.

You mention a slide in performance which is true but recent mean we’ve recently struggled to put out a team.
It’s been impressive that we won away at Watford and Swansea with such a cobbled together side.

With Souttar we were a clean sheet machine, now he’s injured think we’ll probably concede 1 goal each match
So now the team are under pressure to score at least 2 goals each match. So with a dodgy defence we become a bit like Leeds and need to be more free scoring.
However soon we will be significantly stronger. So imagine how many points we’ll get when we (in theory) click and performances improve.

Overall think there’s more reasons to be optimistic than pessimistic, altho accept there are grounds to be concerned.

I am being realistic. We are not as good as you imply we are. Just because we are second now when you look at the trends they point to a deteriorating outcome rather than a positive one. We are losing more games, conceding more goals and at the moment no sign of addressing the CB situation unless CW thinks it is fine to buy another full back to play as a CB.

I wouldnt mind if the style of play was attractive. But it isnt. It is turgid and now the results are reflecting that. History shows the club will struggle unless there is a reset. I thought at Swansea CW did well but against Hull it was the same old. It would be nice to watch some attractive football by Sheffield United for a change, but i wont hold my breadth.

The mistake is/was to extrapolate the great turnaround and rebuild with an immediate return to the PL. The bookies didnt put us as auto promotion candidates at the start of the season and as it is panning out I think they are right.

Compared to the promotion seasons of 70-71 and the 89-90 I dont have the confidence we'll do it. Mind CW could make SUFC history by winning the play offs. We'll see what happens next week.
