I think we have giving it long enough to get a baring of both the poor start the the season and the turnaround under Clough to have a little wagerless punt on how we all feel we will fare between now and the end of the season.

I won't go into full blown specifics as to correct scores however I will give you the previous score from this seasons first meeting against the team in question as well as the opponents current league position.

Once you have tallied up the points accumulated from your predictions you can then check that against some rough averages on where teams have finished in recent years based on points total and that should give you an idea on where you think we will finish.

I appreciate this is a bit of a long winded one for some and I don't expect everyone to fancy a punt as it is time consuming. If you don't want to then fair play no problem at all just thought it might be of interest to some.

Team / Previous Result / Current Position / Prediction (W/L/D) / Points gained

Notts County (A) - won 2-1 - 23rd
Bradford (H) - lost 2-0 - 12th
Peterboro (H) - draw 0-0 - 5th

Brentford (H) - lost 3-1 - 1st
Crewe (A) - won 3-1 - 21st
Shrewsbury (H) - lost 2-0 - 17th
Gillingham (A) - lost 2-1 - 14th
Bristol City (H) - won1-0 - 22nd

If we don't strengthen in the JTW I think we are looking at around 50 points. To be fair, I'd take staying up now. But I'm still hoping we will bring a few in and finish mid-table.

Think you're right Deano, the realistic view is what Cloughie has mentioned several times. He's looking towards safety this year, maybe not the 'great ambition in the sky' that some on here would like to hear, but it points to building for next season. Rather than sending out false hope, the JTW is a notoriously difficult time to sign players. Desperation is often what drives teams to sign at this time of year, and making the right choices, at least those that Nigel thinks are right for us, is what we should be thinking about. NC has already stated that the summer is when we'll see some serious wheeling and dealing, so better we spend money wisely, than to buy players that aren't good enough for us. UTB

You missed out Colchester (A) and Brentford (H) - a potentially vital 6 points at stake there!

66 points total for me. Then I'll look agonisingly back at the delay in sacking Weir.

Sacking a new manager after 10 games is probably the soonest you are ever going to do it. The mistake was appointing him in the first place. Mind you everyone on here thought it was a good idea, so what do we know?

Well, yes. But given that he was appointed, it really didn't take long for it to become painfully obvious he was NEVER going to "get it right". It goes to show anybody can be fooled by a blagger's CV. The board not having the cojones to admit they were duped and unceremoniously ditch the clown is the bit I'll lament.

The depressing part to all this is that if we win all remaining games we only finish on 91pts. We finished on 89 two seasons back and missed out

I think you are a bit harsh. I think the first calls for his head were after the loss at Carlisle on 14/9/13. I was for giving him 5 more games after that and I think the general consensus was that 7 games was too soon to sack him (though a minority did say get rid then). We then played three more games getting 1 point before he went. I could be wrong, but I think it unlikely that the results of those 3 games will make any difference. My hunch is that we will end up 12th-15th about equidistant from the play offs and relegation.

Ok, putting my dummy back in, the bit I've quoted is really the bit I disagree with you on and that's what I'll lament. I think 3 games could've made the world of difference - it's not just the maths, it's the fact that the fight could've still been on and the knock-on effect it could've had on those fixtures I've got us down for a draw on. Of course it's all hindsight and landing Clough 3 weeks earlier probably wouldn't have been possible, but that won't stop me agonising over the what-ifs.

I have learned to stop agonising about :

* what if Don Givens had put his pen to the goalie's left in May 1981
* What if Brian Deane had not switched off when defending a cormer in extra time at Wembley in April 1993
* What if Mark Stein had hit the post in the last minute in May 1994
* What if David Hopkins' shot had sailed over the bar in May 1997
* What if the ref had given a pen in the last min at Anfield in Jan 2003
* What if Seamen had been a bit slower off the mark in the last min at Old Trafford in April 2003
* What if Brown had scored that pen against Wolves in May 2003
* What if Webber's shot had been a foot to the right in May 2007
* What if the ref had given a pen for hat obvious trip on Kyle Walker in May 2009
* What if Andy Taylor's pen was 6 inches to the left in May 2012

So, I am afraid I can't get all angst like about what might have happened in 3 games :-)

For various reasons I've spent the last couple of years "not giving a fuck" about football and to be quite honest, although liberating at first, I found it more depressing than getting "angsty"! Let's be right, if Weir had gone earlier, and my little fantasy played out, I'd probably be getting angsty about appointing him in the first place and therefore not achieving automatic.

It was only a throwaway hurumph at Weir but I do think if we miss out by around 10 points then even 3 games could've been the difference.

Everyone?

You missed out:
What if Kevin Phillips had not scored the injury time winner in August 2008.

I reckon about 43 points from those games giving us a total of 68. Hopefully meaning we sneak into the top half.

Could be David Moyes you're talking about.

Not at all mate - David Moyes, although not my kind of manager, is a decent one. I honestly don't think Weir will ever succeed. Well, maybe up in Scotland.

We're mid-table this season. I'm an optimist, and I'll still whole-heartedly believe we can hit the play-offs until it's mathematically impossible. But we're mid table this season. There will be no flashy, big money buys this month. Maybe a couple of additions here and there, and a few players out on loan. We will continue our slow rise up through the league and end up somewhere between 10th and 14th. Given the start of our season, that's the best we could hope for.

Then Cloughie can buy some proper talent in the summer, get rid of all the dead wood and have a full season where he can push for promotion. 2014/15 season is gonna be waaaaaaaaaaaaay better. Let's just grit our teeth and get through this one.
