I think difference here is that we don’t know the wealth of our new owners. I might be being short sighted, but as long as it doesn’t prevent us getting our other targets, why does it matter what he cost. He’s clearly a main target for the club.

He might be a bit over priced but based on what he's produced so far...

Similar age to Osula, yet is a proven goalscorer at Championship level compared to a guy who we got good money for but hasn't scored a league goal above League One level.

Score decent numbers of goals in middle to bottom end Championship teams

Already has more career goals than Rhian Brewster.

Most of the goals he scored on his highlight reel would have been fluffed by Kieffer Moore.

Having said that, I'd still put him behind BBD in order of importance of who we get in.

Supply, demand, situation and negotiation.

What he’s “worth” isn’t absolute.

We are pushing for promotion.
Rival teams interested.
We’ve recently sold Osula, Trusty, Slimane.
We’ve new owners looking to make money.
January inflates prices.
Young, British player.

Is he worth it? Who knows. Doesn’t seem to be instead of other targets.

He is young, he has a good record at Preston Leicester and Stoke (22 in 62 appearances), he’s got the potential to improve, he’s unlikely to lose much value and possibly gain value

Find me a player with similar credentials. Could be wrong but not sure there’s many out there.

The wealth of the owners can only get us so far due to the financial constraints we’ll need to work towards. Even if it’s a bunch of billionaires.

Also have to consider that loading up signings now with loads of incentives if we get promoted will reduce the budget for next summer should we be promoted.

Sunderland scenario for example

20 odd million agreed for le fee in the summer and were willing to pay 13 for cannon. That’s probably a 3rd of what most promoted teams realistically spend in their first season accounted for before they’re even up.

That’s kind of how we have to look at it -

£10/15m Osula
£6m Trusty
£8m Bogle
£1.2m Slimane
£5m Traore

We’re just reinvesting a bit of that into signing a decent championship striker. I’d probably say we sold every player above for over their market value.

We absolutely dry-bummed Celtic for Trusty....

Don't worry if we do sign him, he'll be on the physios table come the end of Feb.

I hope we all know what we getting here if it happens, he’s more Jordan Rhodes (prime version) than Billy Sharp.

He does nothing much at all but finish chances.. that’s no little skill, but crowds are going to not get on his back when he’s not closing down or running the channels.

For this to work we are going to have to start getting balls in the box on a frequent basis.

Very much agree.

There’s a fair amount of Stoke fans saying…..he’s not tall/ big, not good in the air, not quick, no creativity, also appears a bit lazy.
They say he’s a bit crap…..apart from he has a good shot in him and knows where the back of the net is.

They have a theory that in a poor side then Cannon offers little. Where as in a good side that creates chances….he’ll thrive.
However they do say he’s probably not PL standard, so if us or Sunderland are promoted, then he’d probably need loaning out to a Championship club.
They think he’s good (probably worth 6 million or so) but he’s not that good and not worth the 13 million Sunderland are bidding.

Others joke that Stoke City is a graveyard for strikers…..so he should be alot better once he leaves Stoke. Its tricky to judge how good he is.

So the new owners haven't spent any money = no money to spend.

Shoes and Pitch forks at the ready 😂

Danny Hall's missus on Valentine's Evening...

"I am going to slip into something more comfortable, and I'll see YOU in the bedroom.."

Danny's reply

"Not before I have cleared that guttering out you won't"

I think at the price being quoted we’d be overpaying for a player who’s out of form. However a couple of caveats to that I’d hope we see more in him than he’s currently showing an maybe we think his form at Preston was more representative of what he really is / can be in a side which creates chances for him.

Regarding the price the overpaying only hurts us if it impacts the budget elsewhere if overpaying for Cannon reduces our ability to go and get a much needed quality CB for example then it’s stupid but if it doesn’t impact other areas of squad building then it probably won’t hurt us too much.

His weaknesses are well documented on here, seemingly by people who've seen him play once/twice or a handful of times.

Assuming these are fair assessments of him, maybe Wilder (and his team) think there's plenty of room for him to improve, given the right coaching. If so, and if they're successful in their attempts to improve him, the (reported) transfer fee might be a great investment in the long run.

Do we create that many chances?

Are we setting our strikers up in one on one situations and giving them good service in the box several times a game?

This is what cannon will need.

I’d argue we spend a lot of the time passing the ball slowly side to side around the edge of the area until someone makes a mistake and we score. We’re not ripping people apart it’s been more like death by 1,000 cuts and an extreamly solid defence.

Am I right in thinking that some of our fans moan about having owners who won’t/can’t spend, moan about not competing. Then, same fans when we do have owners willing to back the manager, moan about overspending?
Have you only just worked that out ?

What about the weaknesses that have been listed who've seen him more than a handful? Like Stoke fans? Or people living with Stoke fans?
