This overpaying nonsense, I don’t get it. We paid 20+ for Brewster, several years ago I might add. That’s overpaying.

A 900-page thread dreaming about new getting owners who'll come in and spend silly money on players, followed by a 50-page thread berating new owners for spending silly money on a player.

Stop worrying and enjoy the ride, it's not your money.

Well fucking said. It would seem that some folk are never happy.

Personally I miss the Higdon and Sammon glory days in league 1.

Got to laugh sometimes, the club seemingly can’t win. We show intent of spending decent money and it’s he’s not worth that what are we doing, or player signs for someone else and then it’s we can’t compete 😂
I can’t help but feel a lot of views are based on £13 million feeling like a lot of money for a Championship striker who has mostly flown under the radar hype wise. Ie. Judgement based on vibes and feelings and nothing else.

While I think that price is daft, we'd essentially be spending the Will Osula money on a more proven player, albeit one with a lower ceiling. At worst, we should get a consistent Championship goal scorer.

If the new owners are sanctioning the spending of the money we've brought in for Osula/Trusty/Slimane, we should have a bit to spend. Considering we need 4 or 5 players in, I'm not sure I'd be spending this much of it on Tom Cannon.
That’s kind of how we have to look at it -

£10/15m Osula
£6m Trusty
£8m Bogle
£1.2m Slimane
£5m Traore

We’re just reinvesting a bit of that into signing a decent championship striker. I’d probably say we sold every player above for over their market value.

If we’ve got anything like 10m to spend would sooner buy 3 players than throw it all at him

What does £3m buy you? It doesn't buy you a good goal scorer. Certainly not one that can make the step up to the PL.

Saying you'd prefer to buy 3 players for £10m is basically admitting that you'd prefer us to sign 3 High-L1 / Low-CH standard players, over 1 player definitely good enough

Bogle - overpriced.
Bogle - overpriced.
Slimane - overpriced
Traore - overpriced

Not to mention how much we underpaid for Cooper.

So just the 20 or so "club can't win" sort of posts so far....

In reality it's not black and white. There's plenty of middle ground. Got the funds/will to fund a promotion? Great. Spend it in this manner? Not so great. Unless we're pretending it won't have significant knock on effects..... such as majorly denting our budget and driving up asking prices from selling clubs - this window and beyond

Sheffield United fans - "We need this takeover to happen quickly. The Prince has no money and can't fund a promotion fight"

[Takeover happens]

Also Sheffield United fans - "We shouldn't be spending that amount of money on a player"

🤣
Seen similar to this posted a few times and it’s absolute nonsense.

No one is saying the owners shouldn’t spend, no one is saying we shouldn’t be spending a certain amount on a player. I’d imagine every posters wants us to spend a absolute ton of money.

What posters are actually doing as this is a Utd forum to discuss players especially potential signings and in this instance a “Tom Cannon” thread, is discussing Tom Cannon. If a poster has watched him and thinks he’s not a £13 million player should they be allowed to discuss this or keep quiet about it to keep all you lot happy?

For the record I’ve not seen him play but think it’s a massive gamble going by his stats. But fingers crossed he can get the goals to get us up.

Is he the last striker on Earth?? There has to be better options out there? Have not rated him on the few times I've watched Stoke this season on the telly. Maybe he'll come and tear it up and we'll all be worshipping at his feet....or maybe not!!
Conspiracy theory...are we toying with Sunderland to get them to overspend so we are free to get other targets? It's what a sneaky American company would do.
With all due respect to Stoke, he will have better players around him here. Maybe he has that next level in him and he just needs the environment to unlock it. At Leicester he had Vardy in front of him, so I assume he just didn't get the opportunity.
I'm saying all that without really having watched him though, so I'm just speculating here.

I hope we all know what we getting here if it happens, he’s more Jordan Rhodes (prime version) than Billy Sharp.

He does nothing much at all but finish chances.. that’s no little skill, but crowds are going to not get on his back when he’s not closing down or running the channels.

For this to work we are going to have to start getting balls in the box on a frequent basis.

Has anyone here seen Tom Cannon play more than one game? Combined highlight footage viewing doesn’t count.

I’ve watched him 6/7 times this season.

I just like watching football. When we’re not on I watch whatever is available. Usually take an interest in ex players or players we’ve been linked with so watched Stoke a bit on the red button / dodgy stick.

They’re truly terrible which is baffling for the amount of investment and some of the players they’ve had over recent years but they’re turd.

Regarding Cannon. He’s a good finisher. Has a nice touch and has a trait where he likes to get a shot off early - complete opposite of Moore at times who gets closed down before pulling the trigger.

I personally think he’s way too passive to be worth £13 million. He doesn’t seem to have any outstanding attributes. He’s not big, not dominant, not particularly strong and is not blessed with loads of pace.

When Stoke played Wednesday, Wednesdays went down to 10 men and Stoke weee just crying out for a couple of player to step up and take the game by the scruff of the neck. The Wednesday defence looked a literal bombscare with the ball anywhere near them. They just needed to press and press hard. They were all beyond passive it was so frustrating to watch and they ended up losing 2-0. Cannon did not lead the line well that day at all. It’s been a similar story in most of the other games I’ve seen him in too. If he’s getting service he looks pretty sharp. He doesn’t create anything for himself and his hold up play is not brilliant.

For £13m I wanted someone in who was head and shoulders better than what’s here already. An absolute cert to start. As it stands I think he and Campbell will offer very similar numbers between now and the end of the season. Just one was free and one looks like costing £13m

Had a good read of the Stoke forum thread on him - back before there was any sign of a recall and their views were very varied. Some didn’t think he worked hard enough or influenced games enough and some thought he was their best striker in years.

Ecstatic to be proven wrong and he’ll have my 100% backing should he sign. It’s also great to get a statement signing in during the window and potentially beat a promotion rival to someone’s signature. That’s not a scenario we blades have enjoyed all that many times in our recent history.

Yes - I've seen every televised Stoke game this season

I think I've made my opinion on him pretty clear 😂
What’s your view on him, genuinely? I’ve had a look through your posts and can see you don’t think he’s worth £7m let alone £13m but I’d be curious to know.

Edit: ben1987 may have saved you a job.

I think Bogle is the only one probably worth more currently?

Thanks for that but sorry it’s not allowed, you’ve watched him plenty and giving a honest opinion on the player and don’t believe he’s worth £13million, NOPE! your just having a moan that the owners are overspending.

I don't think he's the attacking talent some people seem to think he is.

In a team low on attackers, who should be getting every opportunity they have, his scoring record doesn't reflect that from open play. He goes missing in games that's crying out for a striker to grab the game and take control of, and no matter how good the service has been for him he still sometimes has the air of someone who couldn't be bothered.

He also has an attitude issue - he either sometimes just doesn't care, or he has a little kick out (like he did against Burnley) if things aren't going his way

He has very little champ experience snd nothing at a higher level, and I don't believe he offers anything we couldn't have found for a lower price somewhere else

He does nothing much at all but finish chances.
That does worry me, its not him but the fact he relies on chances through the lines and quick crosses. Wilder doesn’t play that game it’s all slowly slowly. And relies on a striker contributing to quick nifty footy, Moore can’t do that Campbell can.

Having read all the arguments on here I’ve decided £13m if promoted is the going rate (think double that for Brewster) so as he’s the best opportunity go get him. But, as I say we will have to change and provide more service than Moore has been getting

100% this.

There’s a lot of balanced views with statistics to back up opinions.

Some of the people desperate to sign him will have barely watched him play and assume because he’s got a £10m price tag he must be a world beater

Some are just desperate for us to spend something and sign someone.

A lot of the people saying just sign him are the same faces predicting we’d spend fuck all and are the first to throw their toys out the pram when we miss out on a target.

Football is brilliant because it divides opinions of which everyone’s entitled to one.

No one’s saying don’t spend. We all want some excitement in the window and to smash everyone in the second half of the season.

People are entitled to wonder if he’s the best use of £10m. Yes it’s a drop in the ocean compared to promotion but only takes applying that logic a few times and your millions in the hole. We don’t want to spend £10m on someone for it not to work out and we end up in a position where we’re looking to loan him out in 12m time wishing we’d got another £10m to spend on someone else.

There were people desperate to sign £20m Brewster and now they’re all desperate for him to walk away free.

You can be concerned about the value for money but still back wilder and the player too. It’s not a black and white scenario
