Signings that you were excited by at the time but disappointed you in the end

Howard had been so good for Barnsley that he was expected to come in and boss it for us… couldn’t have been further from the actual.

I’ll add Luke Freeman, the step over king. He’d beat his man, look up and then do a step over to lose any momentum rather than play the ball. I swear I saw him do a step over before taking a corner and putting it straight into the first man
These two for me, 100%

85/86 season, first game of season away at Stoke the old Victoria ground, just finnised work that Saturday dinnertime. Decided to go to the game we won 3-1, I know Withe got 1 possibly two that day.
Twas a bit feisty after the match, walking back to my car

Ian Rush. He was one of the outstanding strikers of his generation, and yet when he played briefly for us he was essentially a human lamppost.

Other (dis)honourable mentions include, but are definitely not limited to, Steve Finnieston, Brian Howard, Steven Hendrie, Samir Carruthers, Danny Cullip, and the latest in a long line of dross, Ivo Grbić.

They weren’t bad for us but if we’re going on an initial excitement vs actual output ratio, Steve Kabba and Danny Webber were both underwhelming for me. Notwithstanding that they both scored some important/iconic goals.
I can kind of understand Kabba. Given his ability and a couple of the goals he scored, I definitely thought he was going to be a legend for us.

Webber I think was great throughout his time at the lane.

On the same lines, I think Akinbiyi can be mentioned.

Yep fair enough, maybe I was being a bit harsh on Webber. I just thought both he had the attributes to go on and be a decent Prem striker and it never really happened. Both gave us some great memories though.

John Ebbrell. A million quid back then for us, was absurd money to be laying down for anyone, so I thought he must be fantastic. Such a shame we never got to find out with all his injuries.

Edit to add: Robin Olsen

Reda Khadra for me, he was one who stood out at Blackburn but couldn't get into the side here.

Baffling to think that early last season we were bemused at why Trusty wasn't playing. Dogshit when he did, despite having decent pedigree.

Can we include managers? If so, Nigel Adkins seemed like a great appointment but we all know how that ended up. Also Mickey Adams; I thought he’d be better than he turned out to be.
Surely it has to be David Weir. Never seen Foxy so excitied about any appointment. Never seen anyone let down so much as Foxy after that!

Dean Hammond: Thought we were getting a good player for League One, my Leicester mate had made him sound class when he signed, and he was the furthest thing from a Sheffield United player that you could get.

Ryan Leonard: It just didn't work out for him here.

Dean Hammond, was really revved up as one of my clients was an ex pro footballer who had played with him. He actually rang me when Hammond signed really pleased for me and said he would boss the midfield in League 1.

He was definitely a disappointment, but I don’t recall myself being too excited by him beforehand. I hoped he would be decent in terms of a tactical approach, but I wasn’t thinking “wow” at his appointment.
