So I get that in "modern day football", the rules are that Anel raising his hands results in a sending off and he had to go.

But not so long ago, the approach would not have been to send the player off. The referee would have just got both players together, given them a massive bollocking, made them shake hands and that would probably have been the end of that.

So why on earth are we in this situation where a bit of silly handbags in a physical contact sport results in a sending off. Surely the current rules just encourage cheating like we saw today from that Coventry player

How in football have we got to this situation and why can't we go back?

Because we live in a WOKE society.
Everything has to have a reason, every protest has to be allowed, everything has to be seen to be 'done right'
F**k common sense, f**k freedom of choice, f**k having an opinion that might upset do-gooders.
'You've upset me and I want reparation for your harsh words/actions'
If someone winds me up, elbows me unnecessarily and seeks to take the piss, I won't be thanking you for it and moving on.
Men want to be men, so let them be men.
That Coventry twat knew exactly what he was doing.
Fair play, he wound Anel up, but if I'd been the ref, and Anel had floored him, I'd have applauded...and given a penalty to us! 😂

Why are people arguing that the £30k per week professional sportsman shouldn’t have been sent off for grabbing someone by the throat?

Waiter in a restaurant does that, he’ll cop for it. Company secretary does it in a board meeting, she’ll cop for it. You do that to someone in front of a copper and you’ll - well - cop for it.

The cov guy was an absolute shithouse but Anel fell for it hook line and sinker, grabbed him by the throat and cost us two points as a result.

If he'd pushed him in the chest, it's a yellow.
The second that left hand went onto his neck, it turned into a red.

The Cov player also pushed Anel in the neck on the floor though, so both should have been sent off if the rules were being applied.

Quite a lot to unpack there, most of it wrong.

I’m guessing there’s no HR department ay your place?

If I'd been knocked twice like Anel in a few minutes I'd done the same. Easy watching from distance but those two knocks where quit hard. Then you get a bollocking in broken english.

I think it’s two reds. He should’ve gone for the forearm smash on Anel in the fall though. Clearly intentional and shouldn’t have been on the pitch to get shoved.

Actually unsure if Anels just trying to shove him in the upper chest and misses tbh but as soon as it hits his neck / face area it’s game over

We can have absolutely no complaints about the decision. The events leading up to it however… just a cunt.

For as long as Anel has been playing professional football, (and for a good few years before then too) putting your hands on an opponents neck has been a red card offence (or your own team mates neck Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer 😁)

It’s completely indefensible. I like Anel and love his approach this season but that was just stupidity and allowing himself to be riled up by a diving twat.

A lot of the pundits on tv say this shirt grabbing etc is all part of the game. It wasn’t part of the game I was taught to play. It’s cheating ‘ end of ‘

I agree. I think there's too many things these days that have become acceptable which shouldn't be.

To make decisions more consistent, they've made some laws black and white. You touch an opposition player's face or grab their neck, it's a red. Makes it easier.

My point isn't whether or not he was wrong to do it. Obviously he was wrong under the current laws of the game. He clearly got carried away and didn't make a rational decision, but he didn't hurt the guy either

What my point is, whether or not those laws are right,. It's an emotional game and in my opinion the referees should be given more bandwidth to manage the game. Instant red cards may not always be necessary and all what happened today was a cheat (Bassette) prospered, which I don't want to see on any game of football

At least not in the restaurants I go in.
To be fair, I did have a 'Spoons' breakfast this morning, but even then, I only got an 'Are you going to order or what' glare.

Agreed.

Bassette laid his hand on the back of Anel’s neck while he was on the floor. So that’s a red in the statement you made above, but it now appears that the back of the neck is ok whereas the front of the neck is a red.

It’s the inconsistency and the piss poor reffing that is getting on most fans nerves.

Bigger issue is the growing fashion for shithousing . Always thought we are sometimes on the wrong end of it . We had our divers but the play acting is BAFTA quality . Is it time we joined in ?

Front of the neck is far more sensitive than the back. I've never seen someone do what Bassette did, but it's obviously not a red. Had he done that to the front of Anel's neck he'd have gone, it is consistent.

Think someone on shoutbox during the game said it's different if it's the back of the neck 🤷‍♂️

I'd be interested to see if it's actually differentiated in the rules, front v back, I thought it was just anything neck height or above. So presumably a thwack to the back of the head be ok as well?

That elbow in his jaw could well have broken it on another day. Wouldn't like a broken jaw a few weeks before Christmas.

Wilder said in his interview he wouldn't like to go down that route and I'm glad he did.

Basset was booked for his over-strong challenge on Anel , the second in 2 minutes - Anel , if clever , would have been happy with that , knowing that the next yellow would be a red - and looking at the way Basset played it would have happened , putting them down to 10 men , not us.

I agree that Anel had grounds to be angry , but refs can't do anything about stuff they didn't see (like the forearm when both went to ground 2 minutes before the sending off - so as a professional Anel should know that - not walk over and do what he did right in front of the ref.

It was so stupid , I could barely believe my eyes - like asking for a red !
Cost us not only 2 points but also removes our best CB partnership for 3 games which potentially costs us even more points.

Just a crazy reaction which hurts the club - he needs some very strong advice from CW.

Anel was joining in,he shot up quick enough to get sent off,so why was he down in the first place,if he had stayed down he would still be on the pitch so either feign injury better or just go down because you took a painful knock
