i thought RND did OK last night. Could his return enable us to return on occasion to the overlapping CB's
possibly like this

Cooper
Ahmy Soutter RND
Seriki Blaster Vinnie Hamer Burrows /Brooks
Moore Brester

Unfortunately Leeds game it was embarrassing when we tried it

I also thought this at first but thing that we did against Leeds which is counterintuitive to that formation was:

  • Have Gilchrist, a stopper as the wide defender and not Seriki.
  • Have a second striker rather than O’Hare.

It might not sound much but I think we could have been a better version of ourselves that what we turned out.

It was like the worst of all worlds and made us far less creative. Shame we had the break. If we’d played Leeds midweek straight after Luton I can’t see how he would drop the guy who just scored both goals.

That’s the problem with managers when they are doing well. They lose sight of what caused the success and just put it down to their decision making, until they get a cold dose of reality and realise it wasn’t!

I don't want to see us playing with a back 3.

At this point, it's been 5 years since we truly played that way. Are we so lacking in creativity that we cannot play any other way, other than a tactic we last used half a decade ago?

There might have been odd moments here and there, like when JLT set up Jebbison to score at Everton for example, but in reality we have been moving away from that style of play ever since Covid first hit. The 2nd Prem season under Wilder, we didn't do it nearly at all, and certainly not to the standard we had been reaching. Slav obviously didn't do it, and even though Hecky reverted to a back 3, we didn't deliberately play that way then either.

We have spent the last 4ish months setting up to play the 4-2-3-1 we have been playing most of this season. I don't understand why we suddenly would switch to a tactic which last brought us success before we signed Rhian Brewster. That's how long ago it is at this point.

The overlapping centre backs were incredible. It was a tactic I had never seen before, have barely seen since, but it's long since been time to move on.

Thought RND was worse than McCallum. Turned easily and didn’t seem to get into the game

This tactic worked because we had the right personnel with the required mindset, going back to it with the current back 3 would be like flogging a dead horse in my opinion. Anel is capable but is probably better in the middle of a 3, Souttar likes stepping forward but he’s no Basham (in terms of energy and ability to be up and down the pitch). RND isn’t JOC and never will be.

I don't think RND got forward as a CB, he was at LB trying to get forward, the first few times he did after coming on he put a few decent balls into the box, one of which wasn't far away from Moore at the far post.

What I noticed was, there weren't many Middlesbrough attacks coming down our left hand side which gave McCallum more space to attack in the first half.

In the second half Middlesbrough attacked a lot more on the wings, mostly Doak against McCallum on our left which pushed him back so deep, it was the same with RND when he came on, which eventually led to their goal.

On another day, we take some of our chances and get a few goals, same goes for Middlesbrough who could have scored a few more on another day.
