Hey ups, Huddersfield fan here, I'm trying to get in touch with a couple of former players who also played for you, they are Ian Holmes and Tommy Smith, does anyone know what either of them are up to, or know of any way I can contact them?

I'm sure you know what he's been up to ;-) stuffing those Leeds bastards. Can anyone help at all regarding these two former players?

I was at school with Ian Holmes and also Dave Smith but haven't a clue where they are now. Last time I saw Dave Smith was when he was playing for Altrincham in the FA Cup at Maine Road - they lost 6-0! :(

Can't help, mate, sorry

Try John Garrett at SUFC

Played against Ian Holmes when he was at (I think?) De La Salle. Also played against Tommy Smith when he was at Emley, whom he joined after leaving Huddersfield I believe?
As to their whereabouts these days..... ???

The only time Ian Holmes played for us was when Woody was injured or dropped (he was dropped after 4-0 defeat at home to Derby in April 1972). Holmes had more enthusiasm than skill. He was a decent player in reserves matches and the nearest he got to scoring a goal in the 1st team was at home to Everton in October 1972 (we lost 1-0). In the 1st minute attacking the Kop End, the linesman put his flag up but quickly put his flag down as Everton cleared the attack but immediately a pass from the middle sent Holmes clear on the right, and he then put the ball past Everton's keeper David Lawton and he thought he had scored his first senior goal and he went wild in celebrating. Everton players protested to the ref about the linesman briefly putting his flag up. The ref then had a word with the linesman before deciding to disallow the goal. Another memory of Ian was in thee FA Cup defeat at Carlisle in February 1973. My dad was aghast that Holmes was in the team ahead of Woody (we hadnt realised until reading the Green Un that night that Woody wasnt well enough to play) and after the game my dad loudly blamed Harris for selecting Holmes instead of Woody

De La Salle correct - Dave Smith also.

I remember Smithy was playing for Huddersfield reserves in the mid-late 60s (can't remember exactly), and Wednesday and United had wanted him to sign for them - he was a Wendy by the way - and he had turned them both down because he said he wanted first team football in the first division, which of course he got.

If I remember rightly, he linked up well with Frank Worthington.

Now, Frank Worthington was a relative of my then wife's families neighbours in Manchester (Citeh fans) and I used to see him quite often when we went over there, especially in the summer.

Those neighbours also had a daughter (who was my first wife's best friend) and she married Don Givens.

I'm not sure if my first wife's families neighbours dog was ITK but he should have been! ;)

Small world.

Not sure who you are thinking of, but it is certainly not this Tommy Smith!

We signed TS from Bromsgrove in the spring of 1978 and he made his debut an the Lane against Fulham on 6/2/79. It was the classic dream debut as he scored the goal in a 1-1 draw. However. it was all downhill from there as he only played a couple more times before going of to Huddersfield (then in D4) im March 79.

I believe he only made one apperances for Huddersfield before disappearing from view...

Think you've got mixed up here Darren. BoS is talking about Dave Smith who went to De La Salle in 60's not aforementioned Tommy who you correctly say was signed from Bromsgrove. It was the Tommy I played against in about 1981 when he had joined Emley after leaving Huddersfield, who we sold him to.

BoS - The Fenoughty's (Nick Mick & Tom were also DLS pupils and Nick was in the DLS 1st XI I played against, which also contained Holmes & Dave Smith.

I forgot the Fenoughtys as well! I remember Tom paying for us for a while and apparently they all played together for Matlock Town.

Wasn't one of the Fenoughtys employed by the Blades as an accountant or soemthing?

I think what separated the Fenoughtys from the pack was that they all had brains - not sure if it was Tom, but I'm sure that one was a chemist or chemical engineer.

I do recall one of his first matches at the Lane, when he threw in two or three body swerves to get round some tackles in front of the terrace flatcaps, the place went crackers.

Tom was the Chemist, he didn't turn pro until he was about 24 and initially joined us as an amateur from Sheffield FC, playing in the reserves as amateur status until we persuaded him to turn pro.
All the Fenoughty brothers carried the same gait, very upright and straight when running with the ball, It looked strange to me but they were all skilful and effective players.

Cheers for the replies lads, I've got some bits of information to go on. I'll ask about at Emley for Tommy Smith as I'm up there regular and plenty of ex town ended up there. I do know that Smith lived in Huddersfield in the 80s so he could still be local. Does anyone else have anything to add?

Just found the clipping of the match! My description of Holmes' disallowed goal is mostly right! Other notable things from that match. Len Badger wearing number 8 shirt instead of his normal no 2. That was because the late Steve Goulding was doing well at right back (he was unlucky not to score in that match with a shot that hit the bar)

That clip's just reminded me that on my 18th Birthday (1968) we went to the De Montfort Hall up Burngreave and Dave Smith came along after training with Huddersfield (ignore Wikipedia, he was there on schoolboy forms at the time and they have his career as starting in 1971 - he was actually at Alsager College until then but was on HTFC's books). He brought David Lawson along (Everton's goalie in the clip I believe) and Lawson was then at Bradford Park Avenue I believe. Lawson was apparently considering joining the Blades.

Shame he didn't, he was much better than John Hope who we signed in 1971 and I guess we would never have signed John Hope if Lawson had been with the club.

Lawson finished up joining Huddersfield in 1970 so Smithy and he played in the same team.

David Lawson was with us a bit before that actually, but you're right about Dave Smith being on schoolboy forms.

I am still looking for Ian Holmes and Tommy Smith. Can anyone help? Also, I am trying to get in touch with a former player called Mark Smith, he began his career at Bramall Lane and later played for Huddersfield, Grimsby and a few others. He finished his career in the Sheffield area and also managed Maltby Main. I am wondering if anyone knows of any way that I could contact him?

Did one Fenoughty become a bean counter, and his brother a pharmacist? Not sure if one, or both, played as non professional I was going to write a s an amateur ,but that would have left me wide open to a smart ass who could say ,"Yes we have had a few of those in our time, but the buggers were paid to perform."

Tom was the pharmacist, not sure what Nick or Mick did.
And Tom first appeared in our Central League team as an amateur before signing full pro. He was playing for Sheffield FC at the time.
