I don't agree fully with the OP, but the atmosphere was very quiet.

I watched on TV and said to my son, that it sounded like a game during lockdown, you could hear the players shouting.

It was quiet but as others have said there are mitigating reasons. It almost needed Swansea to score to rouse us. The lack of opposition fans (not a dig at Swansea to be clear) doesn’t help either.

Yes it was a shit atmosphere, but nobody who paid £30 and could be arsed to get themselves to the ground in midweek for a game on the tele should could themselves 'embarrassed'.

We are doing very well atm accepted, but after last season I feel like somebody who is slowly getting better after a heart attack ..... feeling quite well, but a little scared to get too carried away and do too much too soon in case I knock myself back.

And, 2 home games in 3 days...... last night should have been a tenner a ticket, kids a quid. Not many people in Sheffield can (and are willing to) pull 2 x full ticket prices out of their pocket in 3 days when one of them is on the tele.

So many excuses made, but really it comes down to people that turn up and don't sing.

Chants are consistently started. I look around and see men and women, kids and pensions, lads in Stone Island who look like they want a fight and lads who look like Uni students, who consistently don't join in. It's not because they're on their phones, it's not because they're mid conversation, they just don't bother.

What's even stranger in my opinion is people that travelled to Pompey and did the same. Obviously people can do what they want, but I can't understand why the majority want to stand in silence unless they're shouting at the ref. Do these people want a good atmosphere but just cba to help generate it, or do they not care at all?

Yeah this. I was on the couch.

I didn't put my finger on it at the time, but hearing the coaches shouting instructions. In front of 25000 people? That IS pretty embarrassing.

The rousing chant of 'united' with a couple of minutes to go made me ask where the heck everyone had been for the past 90 minutes.

Bramall Lane truly used to be a better atmosphere than the Camp Nou. Hoping for better on Saturday.

A midweek game against no mark opposition who brought a bus load of fans, a poor performance and a boring spectacle in general, with no real flashpoints. All valid excuses for last night's atmosphere.

The fact of the matter is, atmospheres up and down the country are getting worse and worse as football and society in general becomes more sanitised. It's not an issue exclusive to us.

As others have said, the Lane will always be fine for more important games (bigger opposition, derby's etc). Villa Park will have been rocking last night but if they were playing Swansea in a routine league game it would've probably been dead.

I notice we don't have many songs for our current players. Only Brooks & Souza have songs I think? Hamer has a copy n paste chant, deserves something better as he's clearly our best player.

Maybe if we actually get some chants for our players it will help atmosphere?
Maybe S4 could have stood up pointing at everyone not singing whilst offering his rendition of "You're fuckin shit....... You're fuckin shit........

That might've livened things up a bit😜.

Forty five minutes of walking football in the first half is not conducive to a great atmosphere.

I do think this walking football lark may catch on as a participation sport for us oldies though.

25k has got to be our lowest attendance for a long time. There will have been fewer than 2000 non st holders in the ground. Surprising as we've won our past few home games, and most people will have just got paid. Sky coverage will have put a few off.
To be fair, non ST holders would rather pick Luton game Saturday 3pm over last night if they had to choose.

Get off the couch than Barca blade and get the atmosphere going!!

Absolutely embarrassing. Pathetic atmosphere first half. Don’t you dare try and have an opinion on the game if you’re in the crowd tonight, you are a disgrace.
Kindly don’t tell me how I should support my team. I’m a 56 year old man, my days of singing childish taunting songs at a handful of Welshmen are long gone. I pay my money, sing the GCB song, cheer when they score, groan when they miss, shout at the ref, stay and clap at the end (through thick and thin, including the 8-0). Why should that mean I can’t have an opinion on the game, any more than someone who likes singing and swearing out of tune?
Clown.

I'm an expat and it's a long time since I've been to BDTBL but I can imagine the recent losses to the Blades family and the trauma of last season will be having an effect for some time to come

Football fans make a difference by making a noise inside the stadium not the concourse after sniffs up the nose .
Just saying
The sing song on the concourse for away games used to be a bit of a bonus while you were queuing for your pint, the bog or having a smoke.

Been to plenty of away games in the last few years where you struggle to get a song going during the game but head down to the concourse and it’s like stepping in to the Hacienda.

As for last night, pretty much like every night game against run of the mill opposition for as long as I can remember.

Traditionally the atmosphere at football grounds in this country runs on booze. Less opportunity for pre match boozing = less atmosphere.

As for the attendance, 25k isn’t bad when there were only 100 away fans. This new approach to live EFL football could be the begging of the end for 92 professional clubs and the pyramid as we know it.

Ridiculous ticket prices combined with cost of living and inflation mean people will struggle to justify buying a ticket for a match if it’s on the box.

Also Kick off times all over the place - I’ll no doubt have to miss a few this year due to childcare issues etc. Far more straightforward to plan ahead when you know each game is 3pm Saturday.

Agreed - bit odd when unbeaten and were clearly having a bad game and players needed encouragement.

For awhile I thought maybe Sky hadn't put many microphones in the ground, but after the respectful applause in 50th minute there was more crowd noise.

I couldn't go because I live hundreds of miles away. Hence watching it on Sky.

The atmosphere for the pig game will be flat .far better 8pm a Friday night in the dark

It's the same at pretty much every home game. It wasn't just because of Swansea.

Midweek games this side of Christmas are surely always a bit flat unless its a big game in terms of opposition?

I remember my first ever game was mid week against Villa and although I loved it, the place felt quiet.

Going to the home game against Watford on a Saturday in the spring of the same season was completely different experience but we were also trying to avoid relegation so everything was built up.

Everything about last night for the first half was a snorefest. Players were half asleep, so were the fans and so was I (watching on TV).

Luton on Saturday I am sure will be better but a bit like the result, we won, we move on.

People just need to accept that there is never going to be the kind of atmosphere at the lane of years and decades past. it's gone. It's the same at most English league grounds now. It's a new generation of fans, many glued to their phones all game, and ticket prices have priced out many of the previous generation who created those atmospheres.

Fratten Park was an outlier, the atmosphere at most English league grounds now is non-existent. Compare it to German league games and you can see how quiet our crowds are in comparison.
German league is very loud, but it is orchestrated. They have a bloke at the front kind of conducting it. Not saying it's a bad thing, it creates loads of great noise. It isn't spontaneous in the same way as English football.
