(Pictured, Oldham Athletic’s Bert Lister slides in past Southport goalkeeper Bert Harris to score the first of his in all six goals against Southport in a Division Four match at a snow-covered Boundary Park on Boxing Day, 26th December 1962. Despite taking place more than 60 years ago, the 11-0 score line from the match is still the latest new score line in a league match).

A weird concept but fascinating stuff.

I had assumed that the teams who would have won the most by a given scoreline would almost entirely be teams which have spent most of their existence at the top end of the top division - the fact they can’t get promoted meaning they can’t ‘find their level’ and start losing in the division above, so they are the teams with the most wins throughout history.

Mostly that’s true, but we and Burnley have snuck into the list as most often achieving two of the most common winning scorelines. I’m not quite sure how that’s happened. How have we managed to win 2-1 more often than (say) Liverpool, given that they’ve won so many more games than us?

I suppose we have the advantage of being more often outside the top division, so playing more games in total, but it still surprises me.

There must be a mistake.

I cannot see Sheffield Wednesday's name next to any of the winning score records.

Surely such a huge club would be the sole name against all of the winning scores.😁

Out of curiosity how did you put this together?

It’s currently about 20% more games if you play outside the top flight which will skew the results considerably (although was 10% for a lot of history when the top division had 22 teams).

Disappointed that I can't see the picture of Oldham Athletics Bert Lister sliding in past Southport goalkeeper Bert Harris to score the first of his in all six goals against Southport in a Division Four match at a snow-covered Boundary Park on Boxing Day, 26th December 1962.

We lost 10-3 to Middlesbrough 18.11.1933. Not surprisingly we were relegated from Div 1 that season.

A lot of these scorelines happened in the years after the offside law changed before the 1925-26 season.

Between 1925-26 and 1929-30 we beat :

Cardiff 11-2
Man City 8-3
Blackburn 5-3
Burnley 5-2
West Ham 6-2
Arsenal 6-4
Man Utd 6-1
Burnley 10-0
Bury 6-1
Leicester 7-1
Newcastle 5-3

And lost :

Sunderland 1-6
Bury 4-7
Arsenal 1-6
Huddersfield 1-7
Burnley 3-5
Wednesday 2-5 (surprised they're not still singing about this)
Huddersfield 1-6
Blackburn 5-7
Arsenal 1-8

In 1929-30 our goals for was 91 and against 96.

Thank you for that, very interesting!

A friend of mine (1909 -1989) who played chess for my club told me he saw us beat Cardiff 11-2 in 1926. After we scored the 10th goal, spectators threw their caps in the air and then seconds later they had to find where their caps had landed!
The game was played on New Years Day 1926, less than 8 months before that we'd beaten Cardiff 1-0 in the FA Cup Final.
