One of the most idle players I ever seen in a Sheffield United shirt.
Saw him in the play off final, 1998.
He tried a one two, but couldn't be bothered to go for the return. I was right in front of it. Not for me

Opinions eh……I really enjoyed watching him play for United….i thought he was quality👍

Dave White was definitely past his best and a bit of a crock, but get him on the pitch for us and he was still very handy.

Remember us playing Wolves at the Lane in a big promotion match and White scoring twice for us as we came back each time to level it at 2-2. United put the pedal round the metal and were absolutely all over em for the last 15 and heaven knows how we didn't score. Then in the last minute of injury time, the Wolves centre half just hacked it clear in desperation...and it landed just perfectly between our two centre halves for their one speedy lad up front to run onto and score a winner. Gutted doesn't do it justice. Still am at the thought.

White was decent for us and a cracking buy from Kendall for £500k.

Apparently he liked a sherbet or 8. If he had been on the juice a day or so before the game he didn't want to know. If he hadn't, he was still a potential gem.

Most of that team loved a drink, was probably one of the reasons why we didn’t go up.

I’ve noticed a few posters making comments along the lines of “yeah, but SPL…” as if all clubs in that league are somehow of a consistent standard. This morning I see that Man City are linked with Kyogo Furuhashi. Some of our fans, honestly 😂

I remember David White as overweight, injured most of the time, slow and just way past his best. He was signed in the latter days of Harry and seem to recall that Harry said he was acting as a mole for the board with a view to Kendall coming.

In short, I wasn't a fan!

Gareth Taylor, Mark Patterson, David Holdsworth, Gordon Cowan's Michael Vonk, Jan Aage, Andy Walker, Chris Short were the class signings of that era.

I digress, but if I was McDonald I'd have said to Harry go on holiday for a week, come back and I'll give you a decent transfer budget to rebuild the team which Kendall got and given him an extension to his contract! Harry did well at Palace, Forest and Barnsley all after us.

SPL made Conor Salmon look like a footballer. That’s all I’m saying

I liked David White.

We wouldn't have got him at his peak but thought he was OK for us.

Got any 6 foot 3 wingers in mind then?
The point isn't about tall wingers, it is about squad building, making sure that we don't end up with specific weaknesses, whether that is height, strength, pace, skill or even mental attributes.

Vs QPR we realised we lacked pace for counter attacking when the game changed second half. Johnston may address some of that and if he's as good as some say I'll welcome his signing.

Given time Souttar and Murphy's superior ability in the air may actually cover for us not having too many tall players. When we've played Liverpool and got a corner I've often thought, "just avoid van Dijk" only for us to swing it in and van Dijk easily nodding it away.

Right, but it's utterly pointless to say if Trusty leaves we shouldn't sign Johnston because he's shorter. We need a left winger. It's not a wingers job to defend set pieces or get on the end of punts into the box at the other end. If Trusty leaves we probably sign another centre half and obviously they will be taller than your average left winger. Just think its a non issue on this thread

Bit of a difference between being the star player and not breaking in the side though

I liked David White.

I found him a massive letdown.

He had one or two moments but he seemed to be devoid of confidence and rarely took on his man.

He was injured a fair bit and on good money. Wasn’t he related to Freddie Pie who was linked to MacDonald?

In those days you didn’t speak much of mental health but he didn’t seem to me a player in a good place and seemed lacking in confidence.

I think his uncle was someone on the board, so that might have been him?

Injuries ruined him. Think he retired at 30.

If you watch the season review, he did contribute to a few goals. Remember him putting a few decent crosses in. The team under Kendall was full of players like him, premier league reserves, who were too good if they could be arsed in the Champ.

Problem was they all liked a drink, we fucked off to Magaluff before the Palace game. Beat Palace 3-0 a few weeks before at Bramall lane.

I rarely get on a players back, but for some reason David White was one, can't really remember why exactly, just seemed this slow unit who didn't contribute in the general play, and was playing ahead of peak Mitch Ward who had a great partnership with Chris Short before White arrived. But White did get goals, he had that instinct and could finish well and we were a good team that season, so I sure he contributed more than I could see.

Yeah he didn’t seem particularly bothered by the time he reached us. But as others have noted, in retrospect he was clearly dealing with a lot of personal shit.

I was young at the time and had grown up on the Basset era, which was amazing but we had never made any big name signings. White was one of the first times I remember being excited about a signing. Maybe Nathan Blake as well. Glyn Hodges was clearly a better singing than both but didn’t have the same feel, maybe because he’d already been with us on loan.

Sorry to go off topic. Just got a bit nostalgic there 😂

They all Went to the Isle of Man for a piss up before the play off final. Jan aage couldn’t believe it!

Was it IOM or IOW?

Someone I know who was on our books at the time but not involved at Wembley told me that whilst pissed one night, Kendall motivated some of the players by telling them they'd be fucked off if he beat Palace!

Jan Aage said IOM in this article but I guess he could have been mistaken
