Retained List

Not weird , it has been a few years since we have stopped revealing which u21s players are leaving us

Last summer

Archer will be under the "retained" section as his buyback probably doesn't activate until the summer transfer window opens in July, not sure about Coulibaly though.
Yeah makes sense what you and LJ said but just seems like he's here next season to some when he's in that category.

Yeah, I agree, if people didn't know about the automatic buyback from Villa it could be quite misleading.

Pretty sure we'll find out who out of them gets transfer listed around June/July as well.

As for Coulibaly, him being retained makes me wonder if he has at least another 6 months or year on his deal and that we might be able to cash in on him this summer.

Archer will be at Villa for about 2 seconds before they announce he's gone to, fill in the blank, and it ain't us.

Can I just check if by thie coulibaly has been offered a new contract? Can't remember if his contract was expiring.

O

Is there a chance that Villa won't activate the buy back clause? If the fee we agreed originally is higher than they would expect to get now, and they don't want to keep him, why would they activate it and then end up losing money on him? I obviously don't understand the structure of the deal fully, so happy to be informed why my set of circumstances wouldn't happen

Squad is thread bare. It’s likely we need to replace 14 players from that list with the loan players, released and players that will possibly turn down their contract offers.

Thats before we’ve sold a player. Ridiculous.
It seems quite intentional, and considering performance, squad cohesion and the dressing room problems reported last year, I'm quite glad to an extent.

From what I have read it's not a buyback, if was structured as if relegated, they have to buy back.

They have to buy him back on relegation

I expected more than 10 on today's list but surely be more to leave!

Ollie Mc Burnie is on the Free Transfer ( Ongoing discussions) List along with Adam Davies, John Egan and Ben Osborne

Osborn in "ongoing discussions" which doesn't seem to tally with the news a few days ago that he was being released? Would have expected him to be in the 'Free Transfer' section(?)

First thing to say is that this list is accurate as of the 3rd Saturday in May when it was sent to the League - so things may have changed in the meantime.

So what have we learned ?

We've exercised our options on Bogle & RND - hopefully the latter will get and stay fit.

I was under the impression that we had an option on Osborn - if so , we have clearly not exercised it - so why are discussions ongoing ?
Are we trying to reduce his wages below what he would have got if we'd exercised our options ?
Are we trying to get him for longer than 12 months ?

Looks like we are interested in keeping Davies , Egan , Jebbison & McBurnie but no contract agreed yet.

On the retained group , there are some we suspect need moving out and others who we'd like to keep but may be tempted away.

Basically the whole squad is up in the air and the takeover talk will not help resolve it.

Looks like we'll have no real idea what's in store till after the season begins.

Replacing all fourteen will make the squad too big, just as it was in the last 2 seasons (which didn't really get highlighted due to our injury situation), losing 14 players we could probably manage by signing 10.

For me i would sign (basing it on 4-3-3 or 3-4-3)
GK x 2
RB/RWB x 1
CB x 2
LB/LWB x 1
CM x 1
ST x 2

That's 9 players which should provide cover and competition to each position, any other signings on top of that would be like a luxury signing, like McAtee was.

In our league 1 rebuild under Wilder we signed these players in the summer window.

Loans: E Ebanks-Landell, H Chapman, D Lafferty (made permanent in January).
Permanent: S Moore, J Wright, J Wilson, C Hussey, L Clarke, J Fleck, M Duffy, JOC.

11 players that summer, with four more in January.
Loans: J Riley, J O'Shea
Permanent: S Caruthers, J Hanson

Including loans that's fifteen signings over 1 season, with better players already in the squad (like Hamer, Arblaster, Osula, Robinson) surely we can pull something like that off again.

Bettis was happy that the deal protected us - he goes back if we are relegated - it's not Villa's option , it's ours.

Automatic so they have no choice, think there was a bit of talk about the deal in the summer being a way for Villa to get around the FFP/PSR rules by selling homegrown players with buyback clauses.

Could we choose not to activate it?

He IS in the free transfer section - but as of the 3rd Saturday in May , we were talking to him - so he can go and find another club if he wants.

If we had a recruitment team able to sign 14 decent players I’d agree. I don’t think we don’t & we also don’t have the finances while ever a takeover is looming.

The other issue is the players that are leaving are the only ones who had the cohesion within the previous squad.

Surely the fact we decided to release Osbourn tells us we have the funds available to replace him?
