Without exception, I’m not making excuses for any or absolving any of them of this question: are they not embarrassed by what they’re serving up this season?

It’s not even a case of JUST not being good enough, they’re being outfought regularly to boot, for quite a few games recently by teams who have nothing to play for.

The lack of professional pride is astounding and embarrassing to see. And I can’t believe how Scot free we’ve let them go with it.

The only ones who kind of keep some reputation are Baldock and Egan and that’s only because they’ve been injured half the season…

Utter, utter shambles. The lot of them. Including our POTY.

Trusty on a season long loan to Birmingham in league one, I’d be touting that as soon as they announce who their manager will be.

They should piss that league and the lack of exposing his weaknesses for a team dominating games should be enough to tempt them into coughing up a couple million for him.

Christ almighty what a mess.

Paul Mitchell was very wise to get out after the Arsenal game cus the chickens were seriously coming home to roost on the skipful of shite he turfed out on this club.

I have always thought that the Newcastle game was a pivotal point re embarrassment (or lack of it).

Before that game, we'd conceded 9 goals in 5 games. We only had one point, and late goals had cost us in games v Spurs, City and Forest, but Foderingham was playing out of his skin and most other defenders were far above the standards we see now.

Then heads went down collectively during the Newcastle game. I felt that a couple of the players - Anel most notably - stopped trying their hardest in the second half. That pathetic performance resulted in our worst defeat since 1891, and yet:

  • Heckingbottom just shrugged it off. No apology to the fans, just lamented that it was something that could happen in the PL given difference in resources.
  • Ten of the 11 starters kept their places for the next game v West Ham. The only change was McBurnie coming in for Norwood. We were a lot better off on the injury front then. What message did that send?

The defeat was basically normalised. Nothing to worry about, these things happen. That gave these players - who both managers think are mentally weak as a squad - licence to get pasted week after week, make the same errors week after week. Because if you lose 8-0 and the manager thinks it's just one of those things, and you keep your place, it's ok to lose 5-0, and 4-0, and even 6-0.

They aren't embarrassed. if they were, they'd be fighting a lot harder than they are.

I can't wait to see the back of this season, and hopefully a lot of these players.

The 8-0 and acceptance from our fans was the huge turning point.

As a fan base we collapsed. We stuck with the manager and a lot made excuses for everyone. Every other club that would be an instant change of manager. We should be protesting at someone Manager to go / chairman / tea lady.

8-0 isn’t acceptable at home and not against Newcastle. City / Arsenal / Lpool if they hit you on a bad day it’s possible.

We folded like the players did.

Don't understand that last bit!
We folded like the players did ?

Yes as a fan base we accepted what shit show was being served up. There had to be a reaction from us as a fan base that we won’t accept 8-0 home defeat.

We just all went home come on here , moaned a little and then that was it.

We needed change and it came too late. Not to save the season as the recruitment ruined that. But to go down at least fighting.

Speak for yourself. If I'd have been in charge Heckingbottom would have been fired that night.

I accept that we have slow defenders. I accept that many of our defenders are lacking in belief and confidence. I accept that our defenders are not Premier League quality.

What I cannot accept is defenders just giving up.

What I cannot accept is defenders not marking players at set pieces and us conceding goals from unmarked players time after time. That has nothing to do with pace, belief, confidence or quality. Lower league teams defend set pieces better against higher league opponents in cup matches. That's basic football.

I also cannot accept that since Wes has returned we've conceded 12 goals in 3 games because the defence can't be bothered to protect him. I get it with Grbic as no one would have any confidence in him, but Wes has dug us out since returning and we could easily have conceded double that but for him. The defenders owe him for letting him down, but sulky Anel only thinks about himself and his career (play for Man City one day hilarity!), and Trusty has less than zero confidence. I feel sorry for the lad.

It's odd when one of the only players who can walk away from the season with his head held high is a defender who's been part of a back line that's conceded over 100 goals.

Can’t agree on Robbo, fights every week, bollox others and looks like he gives a fuck

Putting him in the same box as Anels mentally or Trusty’s positional sense is like comparing Margot Robbie to Margaret thatcher

cant remember a prem season overall with so many heavy beatings for lots of clubs , 5 and 6-0 games all over the place

but at times we have looked like Keystone cops from the silent movie days , forest equaliser saw us crash into each other to gift a goal and the attempts at tackles in the second half was at best pàthetic and at times criminal

fresh page though now , big big clear out and an influx of hopefully more athletic injury free players coming in

Excellent point. That week we had fans on social media and football heaven saying ‘could be worse, look at bury’.

It’s absolutely pathetic

I thought I’d got this season under control . Id resigned myself to the fact that we were letting goals in and performances were bad……or so I thought.
sunday morning, someone asked a very simple question….are your defence really that bad and before he could draw breath I launched into a rant about not only were they not very good, but they couldn’t seem to care a rats arse anout anything once they’d gone a goal behind. I then had a rant about how petulant Anel had been and he’d obviously decided he couldn’t take anymore and a red card was infinitely better than playing the last two games. The poor man didn’t know how to reply.
Next year is my 50 th season. I’ve never seen defenders give up so quick . Ive Seen some rubbish but the attitude this season is even worse under Atkins.
Roll on next season…..it can’t get worse……..😵‍💫

Paul Mitchell wasn't deciding who to sign. That wasn't and was never his, or anyone else in that role's job

What defenders? ... we don't have any!

What a very stupid comment the Fans gave up like some of the players did. A lot of proper fans including myself have stayed until the final whistle in all games. fans walked out when we were getting battered that is up to them. There is nothing wrong with that. I accept some of the players gave up. Thankfully a lot of those players will be gone after this season has ended, and good riddance to them as well. point your anger towards the owner.
