...and Ademola Lookman. Basically fishing in the lower leagues for young players with a high potential ceiling.

Overall, I can't see many signings which would have been within his remit that Everton during this time there have made that wouldn't have covered the initial outlay.
Obviously we can't really be sure which ones he was significantly involved in, aside from those three specifically mentioned young English players.
If it’s true it’s a pretty positive appointment imo it’ll be interesting to see what new staff he brings in with him given they’ve spoken about a wider restricting of recruitment

It’s certainly going to be interesting, if he can find those types of kids then it’s potentially very exciting however convincing them to sign for Everton is quite a bit different from us.
I’ve seen a couple of concerns that he’s effective with a DoF but we know that’s going to be Wilder, so presumably the previous relationship is a positive in our structure.
Lots of work to do.

Hit and miss last few years

For every Docoure there’s an Alli

They seem to have 1 big transfer a season, which I would say have been successful, but then struggle with the mid range to lower end which is where we will be shopping.

That said he can’t be any worse so give lad a chance eh?

Standouts are Onana, Tarkowski, mykolenko, Godfrey - then there’s chermiti, garner, vinagre, alli, Allan and our friend Olsen

Scouts only offer opinions though. Hoyland (or Mitchell before him) don't have final say.

Doucoure, Alli etc don't need 'scouting'.

I get that they only offer an option, but if a manager trusts his scout, then his opinion will be valued or what’s the point

Think upon reflection Everton probably wished they had scouted Alli😂

Scouts aren’t paid to only unearth the next Ndaiye you know…….

I've got no problem with this appointment and i think he'll be looking for the next young JOC, Bash, Baldock etc rather than overseas (which ironically is where Mitchell thrived)

I can understand people's disappointment tho with the club needing a complete reset and fresh start but bringing in a familiar face and Evertons recruitment over the past few years being more than questionable.

All in all let's see what he can offer us before completely sticking the boot in.

Thought he was at City, but thought I was just confusing him with Hodges. Anyway, it's good to know he has that sort of pedigree. Don't see how anyone could complain with this. Seems like he must have good knowledge of both domestic and European players. It's good that he had a focus on Belgium, Holland and Germany
I'll start Ex player and being head scout for Everton is hardly a ringing endorsement with their record of spunking money on bad players, isnt that what's got them in trouble..

Well i saw an article about his major achievements at everton was bring DCL and Braithwaite in and he specialises in europe scout🤔
I think I read the same article - I think it said they’d brought in Lee Sargeson from Brighton whose main task seems to be to sort out their recruitment..it may only be coincidence that JH has moved on but ‘new broom sweeps clean’ might apply… perhaps we should have been going after Lee Sargeson?

I don’t know anything about Hoyland. Some good things and bad things wrote on this thread.

The club needed a total overhaul , new players new recruitment, new (ish) management team.

The proof will be in the pudding and will be judged again properly in 6 months time when we have a brand new squad.

I do believe it’s quite a straight forward task , big budget , huge movement in terms of players out of contract so really are working with a blank canvas. Needs to work to a 352 / needs to be mobile / good in possession etc.

Players like Joe Worrall / Souttar / Callum O’Hare / Che Adams etc are all out of favour / out of contract. It’s about getting the right balance together. You do this sit back and then blame the manager if the players are good and not getting results.

There are a few types of player we’ll need next season:

1) up and coming ‘punts’ from lower down the pyramid.

2) Established players on higher wages who need convincing to sign for us.

3) Loans from PL clubs to fill the creative void left by MGW/Ndiaye/McAtee

4) Freebies

It’s not an easy mix to get right.

Hopefully Hoyland is the first part of the team who will get this right, he understands the club so that will tick a Wilder box.

Agree fully with this. It’s not easy to get right. But it’s much easier than saying we have no money , get us promoted.

If you’re a head of recruitment or scout it’s really your time to shine. If your good and get it right we can get 100 points get it wrong you end up like Stoke.

Glad we may have a replacement lined up, if only because we need to be ahead of the game for the next transfer window.

Being critical, I’m not convinced you could say he’s been a huge success at Everton given they have spent some big money in players but hardly justified that investment with success.
I may be way off the mark, and it may be the case that without him they would have been down years ago, but I really hope he’s got a list of free agents tucked in his hard drive, all lined up ready to get through the door in July ready for the new season who are athletes and able to keep possession of the football.

So we discount JH, even though he has an excellent CV, because he’s a blade? We also shouldn’t try getting Jay (Luton’s analyst) as he’s a blade too. Fucking hell 🙄

It’s a self perpetuating myth, just like the idea that we only like cloggers, despite everyone clearly loving players like Ndiaye, Macatee, BBD, Gibbs White…..
Aye... It's a boring theme this "bladey blade" comment on the forum.

If true, good luck Jamie.

Fans have been moaning for years about the state of the clubs scouting network.

Finally the club starts to deal with this issue & Fans moan about it!!!

The club can't do right from wrong with some of our fanbase.

I get that it's a shit season but many on here said the club needs a change of staff on and off the field. The club is doing that and it still isn't good enough for some.

Im guessing that JH will be coming in as head scout, so will oversee a team of scouts and scouting network, with him reporting to (as yet still not identified) new Head of Recruitment? I was thinking that the new HoR would be the replacement for Paul Mitchell? That's how I took the message from the Bettis interview anyway. Tbf, I think JH's credentials seem great and he has the experience that we are looking for. Some really need to stop moaning about everything as we don't have a budget to be attracting the very best (they tend to go to Man City etc) and I think we will have brought in a very decent head scout. Maybe the pull of United being 'his' and his old man's club also helped grease the wheels with us getting him (I'm sure being a ex teammate of CW also helped). Good appointment in my book.

Not slagged him off at all, the club and it’s 1 dimensional predictable thinking more so. I don’t know much about him but history says bladey bladeness doesn’t make up for quality.
It's like you don't even know when you're moaning anymore 😅

Let's give him a chance and see what we get. Valid points being made regarding a DOF and what the process has been previously with regard to transfers. Let's hope its an improvement from the shambles over the last 4 or 5 seasons. If he is the guy that found Beto at Everton then his judgement looks OK from a distance.

The power struggle over who has final say on a signing will be the biggest worry. The Prince and United World guy should take a back seat.

Slimane ( Not making an impression)
Traore ( Too raw )
Coullibaly ( didn't make an impression)
Larouci
Thomas.
etc, etc, etc, etc, etc,.

It's says alot when Jack Robinson and Ben Osborn who realistically were bought as squad fillers have now been elevated to being amongst our better players. The only way is up.

It's the always have too have a blade connection that gets me.
We must be the only club that thinks like that in the world of football.
When Wilder gets sacked you know a big chunk of our fan base will be calling for Sharp to be appointed manager or Montgomery because apparently they get the club and will get us fired up.
Football has changed dramatically but we are stuck in the 90's with preferring passion over Skill, Athleticism and ability.

The club needs a complete reset moving away from this obsession ex players and managers unfortunately a big chunk of our fan base will never give it time to happen.

It might just be coincidence that JH is a Blade. His CV looks strong enough to have him considered for the role. And times have changed at the club since he was a part of it.

I get that but if they are good enough they should get the job. The blade connection is a bonus and may mean they are more likely to be even more committed to their role.

Quite amazing that Wilder got us from league one to the PL then really.

We can never have Kyle Walker back either.

Billy Sharp was rubbish.

But I see your point - never appoint an ex Blade because they have no quality

Anti Bladey Bledeness, may also have issues.

Get that Arblaster sold, too much Bladey bladeness about him n all. 🤣

What an interesting thread. Based on rumour and very little fact or knowledge.

1) No announcement about his appointment
2) No announcement about any actual role
3) Speculation about his success or not at Everton
4) No facts about his precise role at Everton, Chief Scout, Head of Recruitment, Ball Boy, who knows?
5) A misguided belief that the Blades are suddenly the mot prestigious club to join in the whole world, realism no much in evidence.

So all in all, its rubbish.

It's what the internet was invented for, speculation click-bait and nonsense.
All made out to be factual accuracy.
