My Dad used to own the Guardian newsagents next to the Hunters Bar roundabout sign, as well as the one at the bottom of Dover Road which is now Nonnas. Always at the Lane on Saturdays though!
Hi mate, your dad wasn't a radio ham by any chance?

And bottom of Busheywood Road - Dore/Totley. Many a Saturday morning dragged round there!
Also end of Abbey Lane, junction Meadowhead. 95% of our food in childhood came from there. Used to be sent at, maybe, 8 years old to fetch my dad 20 Embassy, which would be supplied in a paper bag. Couldn't make it up.

Fond memories of sawdust burgers also.

Duke of Darnall (Harry Taylor) article from the Daily Mirror in 1939. I was told that the Sheffield Deaf community didn't really want anything to do with him as they thought he was an eccentric character. He was a well known character in the Sheffield city centre as he was often directing traffic much to the annoyance of the tram drivers and the police.

Yes, Silent I saw "The Duke of Darnall" on a regular basis. Being born before the 2nd World War, in Darnall, I can vouch for what the above article says. He was always immaculately dressed and was well respected. As a kid I do remember he often wore white spats a la Charlie Chaplin but didn't mimic Charlie's walking cane twirl.

Hunter’s Bar, my favourite part of Sheffield, born near there in 1950. My grandfather had a bakery on Sharrow Vale Road (first left at the roundabout), next to Boots is a barbers shop (owned by Blades) which I still frequent, and I use the NatWest bank on the corner.

Norfolk Street, you can see Fitzalan Square at the bottom

Photo c1967-68 'ish, as I bought my first trowel from Wilks, '66. which was originally about half way up Norfolk St on the right as looking on photo. On the right, lower down, there was Milk St which linked with Sycamore St., now buried under Arundel Gate.
I went in Wilks often as a kid and teenager, could get all fittings, fixings and tools for your DIY, before there was DIY.
Great photo.

Just about half, bottom half, of what can be seen demolished on the colour photo.
Wilks was originally a little higher up, to the right of this photo.
Does anyone know where they moved to after their position on the colour photo? Or did they just fold? Thanks in advance.

One when he was much older and as I remember him. late forty's and into the fifties. Shame it's not full length, showing his spats.
I remember in the winter he wore a lovely overcoat that came to within a foot of the floor, reight dapper he were.Duke of Darnall-2 original photo.jpg

Interesting postcard of 3 people (players?) standing on John Street.

Any ideas? Is the person on the right Harry?

I saw this for sale on eBay a few weeks back and I was going to stick it up on here but I wasn’t totally convinced they are Blades. There was no player names with the listing on ebay, could well be Blades but no one jumped out at me when I saw it but it is more difficult to name them because of the hats that’s for sure.

I am not sure. Far right looks like Len Birks. The one with the hat looks like Bert Partridge
Need to do a bit more research. What sort of date would you think?

Players or not, it is a nice shot of the criss-cross glass panes at the top of the old top of the JST.

Yeah, same. I guess if nothing else, it is a really nice shot of the old JST.
