Jebbo

The combo of United and injuries has robbed him of much needed game time. He's played 886 minutes of the last 9000 (ish) available since he came back from Burton
Made the point at the end of last season that Sharp's minutes through last season were minutes that should have been given to Jebbison/Osula....

We've been intergalactically bad over recent years of evolving our young players into first team players...

The thing is though, whether he likes it or not, it’s the only thing he’s done of note so far.

I don’t think many people would be surprised to hear that our club doctors aren’t very good and are letting players like Jebbison down, but it will be interesting to see if they can legitimately be held responsible for abstract concepts like ‘career development’.

Where does this ‘lose him on a free’ keep coming from?

Silent Blade often makes this point. We have his registration until he’s 24.

Why would we forego any transfer fee?
Well, we would be due compensation but not a transfer fee I think. Which almost always tends to be massively undervalued.

We have similar decisions ahead of us. Do we offer Egan and Norwood new first team contracts, thinking they'd possibly be decent Championship players, or do we look to sign/play younger players, who can develop into future first teamers?

Considering Norwood couldn't get in the team by the end of our last season in the Championship, I'm struggling to make a case for him being fit for purpose two years later....

As for Egan, i guess a lot depends on whether we retain Anel, Trusty, Robinson, RND and whether we're playing with 2 or 3 CBs. Either way, I'm struggling there too if I'm being honest!

Got bags of potential, would be gutted to see him go.

Not the first to question the medical approach at SUFC - need a complete overhaul IMHO.

Let’s just trust the ramblings of some journo then. Probably informedby gossip. Mind you, We all know the average ones in depth knowledge of financial, legal and medical issues.

Jebbo's shown flashes of ability - definitely more than DCL at the same age and look what happened to him.
The relationship with the club sounds like it's broken down and the lack of info from the club about his disappearance would make more sense if the medical claim is true. Wouldn't blame him for taking legal action if - if - a medic has ballsed up but presumably it would have to have caused significant and longer term damage if a claim was to have much substance considering he'll have been paid his wages anyway.
Either way, might be an idea to see if he can be moved on in January, ideally with a sell-on clause included.

We’re going to need a few experienced heads in & amongst the younger players. Whether that is the likes of Egan & Norwood or new signings is another matter.

I always find this comment a bit meh. 'Experienced Heads' - to do what exactly? It's a throwaway comment like you'd hear off some no mark on TalkSport.

Surely we need a squad with two players challenging for each position with the physical attributes that are fit for purpose in 2023? If some of those are experienced players, then fine, but the reason we're in this predicament is we've retained players based on nondescript notions like 'experienced Heads' as opposed to actual ability. It's 2023 not 1983. The game is getting more physical, athletic, dynamic, faster. If we're retaining players based on 'experience' then we'll be playing chequers whilst everyone else is playing chess.

In Wilder's first spell he talked about being "loyal but not sentimental". The proof of the pudding is, of course, in the eating but I would imagine that if he stays true to that narrative we'll say goodbye to a few stalwarts this summer. I can see a role for Egan but in my opinion it will be time to say goodbye to Norwood, Fleck and Basham.

Fair comment, but let's also remember how far we have come since 2016. We have had 3 promotions and 3 seasons in the premier league...... our best sustained period of relative success for 30 years. So statements like "the reason we're in this predicament....." I don't get. Ok, let's evaluate and look forward but ffs let's also remember the good times we have had with 'experienced Heads' and take a balanced view on where we are and where we realistically want to be.

If we consider them important first team players, there's no argument. But although it can be nice to "keep them around" there's a financial aspect to consider. Retaining 30+ players as squad players can be expensive. They will have little/declining resale value, are unlikely to improve much, but will expect good wages, well helped by experienced agents. Other clubs may offer longer contracts, which could mean we would have to pay good wages to convince them to stay for just another year.

There is also the players' view: they may want to continue playing more frequently and more pivotally than we can (and should) be offering to them. I would be disappointed if any of the players I've named is more than a bit part player next season as I think we should be moving on from them. Egan is the only exception as I would imagine we'll sell Ahmedhodzic but even still I'm not sure he's worth the rumoured wages in the second tier.

The tricky bit is that we've been yoyoing, and we have numerous players in the squad that aren't going to (ever, at this point in their careers) cut it at PL level, but could easily still do a job in the Championship, how you manage that situation is pretty awkward

Not sure if this is the case with Jebbison because he wasnt with us between 11 and 15. Coulibaily not one of our Academy products
It is, but the compensation is agreed at a tribunal for the years we have developed him under a certain age (might be 21 not sure?)

Either way, if we offer him a contract and he refuses and accepts one elsewhere the tribunal fee set will be lower based on not taking into account the years he wasn’t with us.

I'm just glad we didn't sell him at the peak of his value or let him get game time (be that 1st team, U21 or out on loan) to see what sort of player he could develop into. Luckily, he's then picked up injuries and illnesses which means we can lose him for either a nominal fee or nothing at all.

When you have a player who's winning player of the month in L1 at 18 years old, it's absolutely imperative that you do whatever you can to make sure that, when he doesn't turn into Pele before he's 21 that you can blame it on him not smiling enough

It sounds very much like there was a really unfortunate incident last summer which has transpired to be an inflection point. Had he not had his medical issues I would have expected him to start the season ahead of Osula and who knows where he (and we) would be now had that been the case.

I'm certainly overegging the point. But the time he needed to be playing games was Jan 2020-end of last season. He'd have likely been almost as helpless as Osula has been for the majority of this season

We would be exactly in the same position. Feel for him as a person, but he's not that good to be frank.

The blood clot is what has been keeping him out. I heard that from a reliable source months ago.

I suspect there’s a fair amount of skepticism about how we manage the medical care of the players amongst the playing staff.

The article isn’t revelatory stuff. :)
