My paper said yesterday that there had been more league games at Gigg Lane than anywhere else except

Turf Moor and Deepdale. Does anyone know where Bramall Lane stands in the list?

I don't understand how they have had more league games than anyone else :s

Surely everyone plays the same amount of home and away games, don't they? Or does it include the fact that FC United play there? But then Burnley and Preston don't share their grounds. I'm confused, anyone else?

I think it's likely due to the fact that founder members of the FL will have by definition played most number of seasons and also teams in the bottom two division have traditionally played more games than the top two - ie 46 rather than 42.

Spot on.

Wonder where the Lane stands if they were to expand it to first team/first class sport? We could add another 500 plus on for Yorkshire cricket and about another 30 for rugby league. I'd guess there isn't a ground out there that could top Bramall Lane as a sporting venue.

Not sure we'd get up to 500 for YCCC. Not sure we ever played more than 3 games a year.

You can add a Test Match (v Australia) and an FA Cup Final though.

Hillsborough? Where else you could you regularly watch a bunch of pricks play?:) That's a sport surely!

Wouldn't be far off 500, generally 4 games a year (most years they used to get the touring team playing Yorks at the Lane), sometimes more, sometimes less, from 1855 to 1973 (less ten years for the war, ok maybe 450 then)

Yes, you are confused. Didn't it occur to you that some clubs are playing on different grounds than when they started.

All it means is that Bury, Burnley and Preston are (almost certainly) playing on the same grounds where they started as United certainly are.

Wednesday have played more league games than United but they didn't move to Swillsborough until ten years or so after United were formed and so more league games have played at the Lane than there.

I do not see how Bury have played more games at home than us. We got in the league 2 years before them.

So how much of a start did that give us over them? About 30 games with the amount of teams in the leagues at the time.
This would mean they would need about 20 seasons in the lower reaches of the league (i.e. Div 3 and 4) when there were 24 teams and Div 1 and 2 (where we would be) were 22 thus giving them 40 more home games. I'm sure they could manage that since the war.
It's Preston I am having trouble with as they weren't perennial lower league in the 50's and 60's.

The all time league table on statto.com has Bury playing about 40 more games than us, so about 20 more home games. Preston and then Burnley are the top 2. I did not see any other 1 ground team with more games than us.

Wolves were not at Molineux in the first season but might still have had more games there than us or Bury at our respective Lanes...
